I Don’t want Smalling back, I’ve seen enough of him on the ball to know Ole was right to let him out on loan. Exact same scenario as Lukaku. Needed to go.

It's almost like his 9 years at the club didn't happen and only the LVG season did going by some of the comments here

Tell me about it. A CB given all the chances he needs to establish himself hasn't done so. Been called chuckle brother, goes on loan in Italy, fans watch 20 second highlights and call him the defender we need.

Fans act as if he wasn't given a fair chance to prove himself.

How solid it is depends on one’s definition. It’s pretty much same level as City and Liverpool. Only 4 teams have conceded less goals, 15 teams have conceded more. So it’s among the absolute best defences in the PL if we measure defence quality in conceded goals.
Keep in mind that they are teams that emphasize attack. Liverpool's defensive standards dropped from last season, City are pretty much set up to outscore everyone by having lots of the ball and finding a way through packed teams.

So City are in a position where they can be a bit loose at the back and they are going to get loads of points anyway. Thats a bit of a luxury set up that few teams can afford to go with.

We are a team that isnt set up to attack so much, all our best work is done on the break and we're pretty bad when we have lots of the ball and the other team sit back. So there are more players in good enough positions to help our defense, regardless of how well they have actually helped the defense. Especially our fullbacks who dont bomb forward and are better defenders than the teams you mentioned.

Liverpool for example have their fullbacks bomb forward more than most teams in the world. On the ball, they play like wingers and pretty much disregard the chance of a ball turnover and not being able to help their defenders. VVD and Matip, maybe Fabinho if he hasnt gone too far forward are left to deal with this if it happens.

They obviously trust their CBs to deal with this. We don't. They get more help from our setup and its one of the reasons we have been terrible going forward. Its not the only reason because a bunch of our attacking players could have done better than they have, despite not having as many attacking options to play when we go forward as City or Liverpool might have. The likes of Mata and Lingard have still been poor. But I think its fair to say that if our attacking players were playing for the two other teams mentioned, they'd have more supporting players in attacking moves too so it would be harder to suck as much as they have this season.

Yes, that's why he is at Roma.
Yes thats why a good team from across Europe wanted him, but we havent had those kinds of offers for players who havent proven themselves here like Rojo, Bailly and Jones.

We'll see what happens if Lindelof becomes available and whether a better team than Roma are interested. We'll also see if Smalling gets admiration from the very top teams in Serie A when hes available to buy

Lindelof was the main defender throughout last season so if there is an improvement in the defense its either he has improved dramatically which he has not, or the new signings are responsible for the improvement.

In any case I reject that argument, as last season Utd were not generally conceding goals as a result of poor ball-handling in the defense, but rather more conventional defensive errors, of which Smalling was least guilty and Lindelof among the most guilty.
Improved ball handling takes off pressure on the defense. A decrease in random clearances and improved better control gives the opponent teams less opportunities to score.

It's hardly proving yourself at Manutd if Roma are only interested in a loan.
I haven't said Rojo, Bailly, Jones have proven themselves.

With Lindelof, we will see if any clubs come for him at the end of the season.

Roma are a decent team nothing special.

Also, Rojo was subject to a £25m bid from Everton.. just saying.

They've already tried buying him, we want more money. Rojo didnt even go to Everton on loan let alone being bought.

Roma are currently the 3rd best team in Serie A, the 6th best team in Serie A (Atalanta) managed a draw with City 2 days ago. So Roma are obviously quite good right now

Still, only 4 teams have been better at not conceding and 15 teams have been worse. It should be pretty clear to anyone that there is no big problem with the defence.

More than anyone is willing to pay for Rojo
No one rates Rojo, no one claims he is good enough for being 4th choice let alone 1st. Rojo is 29 and Everton bid £25m

Rojo has one year on his contract

So Roma are bidding £25 plus for smalling? Have you got a link?

Okay, can you show me proof that Everton wanted to pay £25 million for Rojo? Seems weird when they didnt even want to take him on loan this season.

You will come back and say these are not reputable sources etc. But show me where even the not so reputable sources say a Roma bid of £25m plus has come from?

The good thing about Smalling playing for Roma instead of playing for United is that the guys coming in here to still hate on him just looks really stupid. He gets praise over there and people are mad. Like a bitter Crystal Palace fan watching Wan-Bissaka beast for United now murmuring to himself; He was never good enough for us, it's his on the ball abilities not good enough for where we want to be with this new Hodgson method we're waiting on.

@romufc What is your point here? Rojo is better than Smalling and somewhere you'll find a transfer rumour that confirms this.

No my point is nothing to do with how good Rojo is. To the contrary, I don't think he is good enough to be 4th choice let alone 1st.

My point is Smalling is not good enough for where we want to go as a football club which is to compete for trophies. Although it may not look like that but lets say that is what we want to do.

A long term plan, I do not see how Smalling fits in this long term plan given he has been at this club for 9 years and hasn't established himself as the number one CB.

The poster was trying to point out that he was given a chance and established himself at United and I argued is that why he is at Roma and not a bigger club?

I see. I get the longterm view, Smalling was never indispensable but to say he didn't establish himself? Just because United largely has been shit doesn't mean he didn't get games here? He is judged on not becoming Rio or Vidic, similarly to Jones except apparently so much that you haven't noticed that he established himself.

We'll I guess you could say he didn't since he is not rated in the club at the moment and left, but then again he has just gone to a team in a new league, with new team mates and slotted right in to improve them. That is due to experience and is a sign of a top defender. If he was as bad as many people claimed, he would never have been able to do that. His experience would have continued to be very good for our club to bridge the huge longterm rebuild, but you're free to ignore this and keep thinking Smalling is a top contributor to the mess we're in.

I guess I should have said what I meant by established. i didnt mean starting games, you would agree we need a CB who will dominate teams, and control us from the back.

With all the deficiency Maguire has, it would be foolish to say he hasnt improved us, he has calmed the defence down.

At Manutd, we want to see a Vidic / Rio sort of player, that is the aim for a CB.

Roma last season goal conceded ratio was 1.26 per game
Roma this season goal ratio is 1.1 per game

I did not say Smalling is a bad defender, just not good enough to be at a level we want going forward.

Players move teams all the time, players improve teams all the time, some players more so than others. That has to do with personality more so than the quality of the player. We see 18 years coming from Brazil into this league and improving teams that doesnt mean they are experienced.

If we kept on keeping players with experience, we will never improve and build a squad for the future. The reason Jones is still here is that he is injury prone.

I have never questioned Smalling's personality, he seems very determined because he was told he isn't first choice and decided he doesnt want to fight for his place here and wants regular football so he left.

Just because you are at the club for a while doesn't mean you are established, in the same way Jones is definitely not an established CB.

There is no room for sentiment if we want to be successful again. You don't see Man City keeping Kompany, Zabaleta etc just because they have experience. This is the difference between a well run club and one that isn't.

Nowhere, I never said they bid that much. You did. I have no idea if Smalling or Rojo were bid for at £25 million, but I do know Everton didnt want to buy him this season. Yes of course this isnt proof

Your words.

Sadly I am not a journalist or neither do I work at Manutd to get a direct offer letter.

So again I ask, show me proof Roma have bid for Smalling that is more substantial than what I have shown you.

And that too more than Rojo.

Yes. As far as I know, nobody is trying to buy Rojo. Roma want Smalling, no idea how much they are offering but hes been one of their best players

Loan or bought with a fee >>>>>> No loan or attempt to buy with a fee. Pretty simple

They've already tried buying him, we want more money
How do you know they have tried to buy him and we want more money?

So you can ask me for proof for Rojo, I sent you 3 links and you cannot get anything on Smalling?

Why should I go by your word?

Its pretty clear they want him, what with him being their best CB and one of their best players and then the rumours they want to tie him up on top of that.

I havent seen Rojo being one of Everton's best players, just one of our worst in the past 3 years. So I think its comfortably different just believing in rumors with no reason to think they are true, or seeing someone is doing really well for a team, one of their best players and then hearing they want him. Why wouldnt they?

Meanwhile, why would Everton want Rojo? Why would anyone?

How is it clear? Do you watch the Roma managers press conference every week where he comes out and says we want Smalling?

Just because you say so?

If a team wants a player they will pay the money. E.g Lukaku. Not worth £75m but was paid

Maguire - not worth £80m but we paid is because we were clear we wanted him.

Anyway, Rojo was an example, i have never once said he is better than Smalling, all i said was just because a club wants a player doesnt mean he is established.

Smalling is arguably (and IMO is) still one of the two best centre-backs we have on our books. I think he was a victim of being good enough that another club really wanted him. We needed to get a centre-back or two off the wage bill and we would have let go anyone bar Maguire & Lindelof had the right offer come along for them first.

I think he would have complemented Maguire rather well. As it is I hope we don't just give him away as we are prone to do. The player is worth £25m easily in this market - probably more

Just like theres a clear difference between basing your opinion on something other than rumours (performances with the potential buying club) and then looking at the rumours to see if it makes any sense, and a player who barely gets a game for us being rumoured to go to another team there is also a big difference between someone who has played 206 games including wearing the captains armband, and another player who has played 75 games with half of them because nobody else was fit.

Lukaku couldn't get a game after Ole came in. That didn't stop Inter coming from him.

Delph didnt get 38 games a season, Everton still went in for him

Iwobi wasnt a starter yer Everton went for him

Mandzukic isnt getting game time and we are rumoured to be in for him.

The reason a player leaves a team to go to a lower ranked team is because they arent getting game time.

Him getting the armband has nothing to do with how good he is? Are you saying teams should be in for Young because he has played 255 games for us and is club captain?

I guess you never base your opinion based on rumours?

If Smalling was so good he'd still be here and starting every game. But he's not. He's now playing in a league that matches his level.

Funny how people are still pining for him even though we have not missed him one bit.

If Young wasnt 34 years old and was instead 29 like Smalling, then yes I think Roma would have more interest in him than Rojo. But how well he'd adapt to Italy would be a consideration, if he did amazingly well on loan then it would be unquestionable that 29 year old Ashley Young is going to get more interest than Rojo.

Delph didnt play a lot for the best team in the league. Oh no

Iwobi started 22 league games last season with 13 off the bench. Rojo has started 29 league games since the 16/17 season 3 years ago

Mandzukic isnt getting a game in a team that has Ronaldo and Dybala up front and wins the league every season. Oh no

Meanwhile Rojo has 1 start in the league while we're 10th in the league

Got any more straws to grasp at?

We should get good ball playing defenders like city. The idea that they need to be good at actual defending is outdated!

You seem to have it arse about face. The defenders of Liverpool and City have very little to do to comparison to ours. They defend from the front. If you look at the defensive actions of their defenders it'll be the lowest in the league.

City dont because they dominate the ball and attack, while we dont have the ball and play on the counter.

Liverpool? Matip does more defensive work than either of our CBs
