Ajax has sold big players in January before when the offer is big enough. The sold Suarez to Liverpool in a pretty similar situation (already knocked out of Champions League, just fighting for domestic honors and the Europa League, having reasonable internal replacements for the player). They also sold Huntelaar to Madrid in January about a decade ago.

I like this signing. We need something in that attacking midfield position.
What? When did he show any of the relevant skills to be considered a playmaker?

More of a Ramsey (or Lampard if we're going a bit further back). A very mobile and smart player with decent technique & goalscoring instinct, but not really a number 10, even though he plays in the hole. He helps a lot to creative players around him though. Ole probably sees the same kind of player in Jesse, but Van de Beek is, you know, actually good at football.
This is what I see. Additional goals in the team and he is creative. He fits more of what a Utd no. 10 would look like as opposed to a no.10 in a possesion based set up as he provides presence as opposed to roaming or coming too deep. I also like him because he is quite versatile, so we can use him with pogba and mctominay, till we sign a deep lying playmaker to replace Pogba. He has decent technical ability, but his physical presence, ability to find spaces and end product means that he will be able to link play and score for us.

That was all pre-Overmars though. He'll probably bleed us dry.

Would be a very good signing. I doubt there is any credibility in the links, but this is the kind of player we should be looking at

We are just linked to everyone.

He's top class

He's an 8 not a 10 so wouldn't really replace Lingard
He can take his place in a midfield three with Pogba & Fred. You don't want a real number 10 playing ahead of Pogba; the way Van de Beek played last season, essentially freeing up De Jong and Ziyech to do their thing. Lingard also is not a number 10 and he doesn't play in this role under Ole because of his attacking skills; it's his movement and the way he acts as a pressing trigger.

He has played in DMC role this season, also a player shows by his intelligence on the pitch that he can play in that play-making position.
He doesn't have the one thing that is most important to playmakers — an actual elite passing ability. He is a player of movement, not a player that would orchestrate the game, and he never showed any promise in that particular area.

The type of signing I'd love us to make but I can't get excited about any transfer rumours any more - we get linked to everyone and sign no one!!!

We are 5th and still in every competition far as I can see it.
Do you think the club will realistically have a chance of getting top 4/win Europa league to qualify for the champions league next season if only he joins?

Anyone here have watched him more than in just the CL games and can say something on how good he is?

Intelligent, hard-working, can help in both phases of the game. However, dependent on the system and movement/well-coached team around him. Which is, well, the case with almost every player out there.

Not sure he would be the best fit in our current set-up. However, keep Pogba, add him along with Sancho on the right in the summer and suddenly you have multiple goal-threats all around your attack.

Would definitely go for him if available.

How do you propose we improve the team then? You sound a bit cowardly to me.
Oh we can definitely improve the team. We could easily improve our team by cherry picking players from the bottom 6 in the PL let alone from Ajax. I just don't think we'd be desirable to Van De Beek. Better teams around Europe will be interested. Real Madrid were heavily linked with him weren't they?

I am not even sure if Donny van de Beek would want to leave Ajax midway through the season (where Ajax will mostly win the title and have a decent chance in the EL) to join Manchester United.

I am just sick and tired of this British FC nonsense. You buy players which are available. Is Maddison that much better than other option? Is Grealish world beater? Why can't we go for VDB and Ziyech and see what happens? Atleast try to get them. This is beyond joke and Ole just comes out says "we will buy if it improves us". Well almost anyone will be an upgrade over what we have. You take small steps to build your team and not just wait for the perfect player.

Why ziyech makes sense is we don't need a another striker - we have three strikers, but we have only one player who plays at RW properly and that's Greenwood who can cut in on his left foot.

Ziyech makes sense.

So we are seriously considering something, now few days after the window has opened? Should'nt we be a bit more proactive in our approach? I would have thought the club had its strategy in place for weeks now.
I think it's Woodward leaking info, so the fans doesn't rage to early in to the transfer window.

At the end there will be info about that he wanted a major salary and just it wasn't right. Its all to satisfy our need for transfers.

His name is Donny van de Beek. He ain’t Belgian, so there is no need for random Capital Letters in the ‘van de’ part if you write his name like that. It would be ‘Van de Beek’ if you just use his surname.

There are some question marks regarding this guy and a January transfer. It might take a year or two of adapting before he’s fully ready to shine at PL level. Not sure if Ajax wants to let him go in the winter unless we offer Frenkie de Jong type of money, not sure if Donny himself is quite emotionally ready for a big move abroad this winter - for example last year he still lived in a bungalow in his dad’s yard in some small town one hour from Amsterdam instead of getting a fancy appartment in the city like most of his teammates at Ajax.

Having said that he’s is exactly the type of player we should focus on right now though, he might not be a truly unique talent, but I feel some people in this thread are seriously underrating him. Personally I would be quite surprised if he doesn’t end up being a Wijnaldum level player by the time he’s 26. His mentality and personality also seem like a nice fit for United. Personally I found it quite disappointing we didn’t seem to even try to sign him last summer.

"Seriously considering" huh. ? If true, we haven't learnt anything about transfers.

Another panic buy coming.

Sounds like a leak from Big Dick Eddy. Is the man dumb enough to give the fans some false hope of a signing given our current situation.

Let’s wait and see. Nothing is a surprise anymore at this club.

In terms of panic buys, he'd be a pretty bloody good one.
Aye, no comments about his talent. He might be a great player. All I am saying is about our scatter gun approach.

We know our midfield is fecking wank and need some bodies there. There should have been a shortlist and should have proceeded with the offer now. The fact that we are still considering embodies what we all have been saying.

haha, of course this comes out shortly after a bad defeat. Trying to appease the fans but I'd be shocked if there was any business done this month. One more year of Glazer/Woodward and we're Everton.

Imo it’s absolutely no scattergun approach buying him. He would be a great signing for us, and should have been scouted for a long time. Huge upgrade on Longstaff.

We need a proper midfielder, not a player who plays ‘just in front’ of the midfield. Fred and McTominay is the part that needs upgrading most - a better ball-user and manipulator in the 8 position. VDB is not a player that helps us control a game.

I’d take VDB as he’s a good player, but not the upgrade on our first XI midfield as such.

We need both. Unless you enjoy seeing Lingard and Pereira struggle.

“Seriously considering” sounds like “preparing a bid”, i.e. newspaper bullshit.
