While football is suspended, what past matches would you recommend to watch?

Just seen @Inigo Montoya thread about the 1982 Brazil WC team (probably the best team to never win the WC) and made me think about the Brazil Italy game from that WC. It was fantastic but it's 38 years ago now and I thought "I bet a lot of posters haven't seen it".

Which made me think.... while football is suspended, what past games would you recommend to others to watch? Maybe not the obvious ones .... 98/99 games, finals, etc .... but something you think others may not have seen.

The Brazil Italy game is definitely worth watching if you've never seen it (and even if you have to be honest)....

Personally, I remember us going to Villa (93) who were a REALLY good team then. Night game, we were in our black kit, we were good, they were good, saves, woodwork, both sets of fans up for it and the famous Lee Sharpe goal celebration .. fantastic. Ron Atkinson interviewed after said it was the best game he could remember... Fergie said it was excellent game too (he makes a comment at end of YouTube clip). Wish I could find full match

And from a fantastic day of football, when the FA made a (rare) brilliant decision to play the 1990 FA Cup semis back to back. Two games, 13 goals, lead swapping hands in both games... just an amazing few hours of football (and the final wasn't bad either!)

The 06/07 and 07/08 season reviews deserve a run out.

I think people should watch champions league games around 99/01, 09/11 and league games 93/94 to remind themselves of just how good Ryan giggs was.

Depends what you are in the mood for.

My personal favorite is the game that has the least to do with football. The Battle of Nuremberg between The Netherlands and Portugal in the Final16 game of the 2006 world cup. A cool 4 red and 16 yellow cards in what eventually turned into somewhat of a farce, where everyone lost their minds and left their cools back at the player hotel.

Not a lot of goals, but a whole lot of action.

I’d actually love it if MOTD carried on with matches from the past. Could be pretty interesting seeing different eras & an analysis of goals today

I think it should be on footballia, but I have it in a better quality if anyone's interested. Footballia can't process search inquiries at the moment, I think the sudden lack of other football activities hit their servers too hard :)

Denmark vs U.S.S.R. in 1985, also known as "the greatest game you never saw". Truly outstanding and thoroughly enjoyable even without any context.

Thanks, don't remember that at all. Just watched some YouTube highlights of the game.

That mid 80s Denmark team was lovely to watch. Loved Laudrup and Elkjaer .... that team just didn't have the all round strength to win a trophy (like 92 team did) but mid 80s international football had some strong competition.
That's funny :) For a minute I thought "how many breakaway goals are they going to score?"

Like this?

Yes we hate Leeds but fair play, their early 70s team was amazing. If you tried to play football against them, they'd outplay you.... If you tried to fight them, they'd deck you.

There's a bit near the end (11 mins in) where they start playing with Southampton....

Chelsea vs Barca 2009, the one where Drogba went batshit in front of the camera (Ovrebo was the referee).

They used to show classic MOTDs from 70s and 80s in years past. Could easily just repeat that for half an hour on Saturdays or Sundays or even more recent ones, certainly any 90s edition would get lots of love. Perhaps last day which is always very exciting.

Anyway in spirit of this thread:

I remember growing up reading about the legend of this match before France 98 world cup. I watched it about a year ago and was hooked...never before have I seen in a high profile match between two reasonably equal nations one dominate for 75 minutes and still not win. It's really quite something. Add in the post match interviews on the pitch and Johnny Warren (RIP) crying in the studio. Great rendition of Advance Australia Fair aswell pre kick off.

Australia 2 Iran 2 November 1997:

Just so the Aussies on here just don't block me there's also your play off penalties win over Uruguay from 2005 on there. Both matches well worth a watch.

France vs Brazil - 1986 World Cup

Amazingly high quality match (best in the tournament - should have been the final), incredible drama, Platini vs Careca. Incredibly tense.

From Brazil.
I also like 2008 semi vs Barca. Scholesy's goal was a thing of beauty, but I like the drama, suspense and determination by our team to hold on.

That Fifa WC semi final in 2014 in Minas Gerais.
Brazil - Germany.

One of the best matches ever. Neymar & Co getting absolutely humiliated in front of 64000 brazilians. Best performance ever from a national team (And I am not even German haha).

Kroos MOTM, I guess he peaked there.

Arsenal v Barcelona in March 2010. Barcelona's football in the first half was some of the best I've ever seen and the second half had 4 goals. Just an all around exhilarating watch.

In the spirit of the present moment, here is the 1977 Cup Final. Manchester United denting Liverpool's treble chasing side of 1977.

Highlights are Jimmy Case's goal for Liverpool - far better than Ighalo's on Thursday. Interesting bits of commentary at 7:20 "United, perhaps the most famous club in football" and "How fitting that a man named Buchan should climb the 39 steps at Wembley" Certainly don't hear that sort of literary reference from commentators now.

Is that Bremner in the no 4 taking the piss? Wonderful video.
All of this is way way before my time so these are just names that one reads about. Always delighted to watch old football matches. I was watching this. Read the Italy lineup and weep.

More likely to be "there's xxxxxxx, he and his wife did a Hello shoot recently".

Great banners at that final.... you can spot @TheReligion if you look closely. And an early Cafite shouting out how proud he is to be a Muppet... we must have been in for someone in the summer transfer window

England Italy going head to head just to qualify for World cup 1998 was really intense.

The 0-0 in Rome had its full game put on YT a few months ago. Was a pretty decent game but obviously main drama came at the end with Ian Wright hitting the post and Vieri heading just wide.

1-0 for Italy at Wembley was a really good game aswell. So many greats on display....Shearer, Beckham,Le Tissier, Maldini, Zola, Cannavaro, Ian Walker...Also more great anthem singing from a young Michael Ball perhaps? (1:30)

England-Argentina from 1998 world cup was on YT but seems to have been taken off now which is a shame as that was one of the most dramatic tournament games I've seen.

Here's the friendly from 2005 instead which was a really good game.

Maybe every weekend we could do a coordinated watch of a United game with a match day thread and all, while we all pretend we don't know what is going to happen. Imagine one for the FA cup semi final against Arsenal. "Jesus Giggs is shite, needs to to be taken off'.

France vs Brazil 1986, Sokrates was spectacular in the first half. Zico coming on just took it to another level, that man could play.

France vs Germany in 82. The magic square in all it's glory, prime Platini and Girese running things.

Italy vs Nigeria in 94, just so you can understand the Jay Jay hype. Also Baggio at his lethal best.

If you haven't, Argentina vs England in 86. Maradona must've had 12 backheels and 15 dribbles in that match. Outrageous really.

66 world cup final. You'll get to see Charlton and his vast talent along with a young Beckenbauer actually playing in midfield.

I'll remember a few others and list them.
