Smith had a few good years at Newcastle before further injury. He was a holding midfielder by that point, so the lack of goals wasn’t really an issue.

No he played most games in midfield, they had lovenkrands and carroll, he played ahead of Nicky Butt when fit, only dropped when guthrie came good
