Always a topic for discussion in one way or another. I hope this period has helped some people to appreciate why they get paid what they do.

Hard to put an exact number on it, but I’m sure most people on this forum would agree with me that this whole situation would be at least 50% better if those beautiful bastards were still out there kicking a ball around. One weekend already and I’m struggling massively, especially as the prognosis looks so bleak :(.

Had to speak to my girlfriend today. Can you believe her favorite color is black? Need football back already.

I hope you’re a black man. Otherwise... well, just keep an eye on her.

In before nurses, doctors and hospital beds.
As a nurse it does sicken me a little bit that some players earn in a week what I make over a couple of years for what is essentially playing a game of football. But that could be said about any massively paid profession. On the flipside players get taxed a huge amount and that money trickles down back into the economy. Plus I love football so I don't really care what they get paid

Think I'm going the opposite way, football seems less important than ever right now.

Edit: That's not to say I begrudge what they earn or anything. The money is generated and it has to go somewhere so better to players than lining owners pockets. I don't know, just as an overall sense of perspective thing, other things seem more important than they did, football less so.Not sure football still being on would change or make things feel 50% better for me.

Why on earth would this make me appreciate why they get paid what they do  Presume this is satire.
I don't get this either. They are getting paid hundreds of thousands a week at the moment whilst some people face the prospect of no pay whilst they self isolate or being made redundant. On the other side you have medical and emergency service workers having to prepare to keep the wheel on society as a whole whilst getting paid a pittance in comparison.

Footballers get paid what they do because it is the entertainment business. The money they get is due to hundreds of millions of people paying towards it.Whether it is from match day revenue, Sky Sports subscriptions, football shirts, sponsorship deals from companies that hope the general population will buy their products due to the sponsorships etc.

Footballers get a share of that, they should actually get nearly all of the money, but a lot also goes to the owners who do nothing for the mass population entertainment wise.

I would rather the footballers get paid what they do and pay 45% tax which helps the economy, over owners who offer no entertainment and only pay 19% Corporation tax and helps the economy less.

Why should footballers be to blame for that? They have no obligation to give to the lesser fortunate, even though a lot give huge sums to charity.

Someone on 30k or 25k or 20k or minimum wage is more fortunate than a homeless person but should they feel guilty and give money? There is always someone with more money than someone else, doesn’t mean they are obligated to give their money to someone less well off.

Who said they should feel guilty? I certainly didn't. My point is I don't get this thread which seems to be suggesting now football isn't on we should be thankful for the players and it justifies the money they get paid - it doesn't. Quite the opposite as pointed out.

I think footballers and pro athletes get paid too much in general but salaries are at the expense of the owners so I’ll accept that.

I don't see the link at all.
Wait until you have been made to suffer 4 months without them.

I made this thread because everyone I speak to in the real world includes a mandatory complaint about how it is going to be barely possible to cope without football. A large part of my conversations about the disease seems to be from the context of how long we will have to suffer no football.

I was pointing out a general consensus that a lot of people say on social media about footballers and earnings. Sorry if it came across otherwise.

Not this again. It's really getting tedious. Football salaries, like other salaries are a function of multiple factors, most of which are based on free markets. They salaries we typically look at while making these comparisons are earned by footballers who are exceptionally talented and among the top 1 percentile of their profession. If you factor in the number of people across the globe who consume the entertainment they provide on a regular basis, their pay is proportional. It's not as if there is a consortium of entities coming together and manipulating player wages (something like what OPEC does for oil prices, even though they are failing spectacularly against competitive market forces).

To have an objective discussion, we need the right data. Let's get the average and the median salaries of all footballers across all countries and leagues and see how that stacks up against other professions. I am sure most of us will be ashamed to see that number. Just looking at player salaries for the elite level athletes only and discarding the rest is illogical. This needs to end.

Most of these guys don't get a proper school education during their career. Football is literally their income and they need to maximize that with investments, tough contract negotiations etc.

We can't expect them to give up other careers and an education while playing for low wages in full stadiums.

Not everyone is a Chiellini or Kompany who study next to their football career (and one could argue the money they made helped in balancing education with football).

I think OP is trying to make the point about how footballers entertain us. And with this pandemic going on and no games, with us dying of boredom can we understand now why they’re paid so much?

I can see the point, but still of the view that they get too much..

So true the OP. I’m bored beyond belief.

However, I’ve been an MUTV subscriber for about 10 years and it’s nice to watch the old classic games they play every day.

For entertainments sake I think he’s saying but still to get 500k a week is insane money for playing football, am sure sometime in my lifetime we will see a £1m a week player. When you think the average salary is around £35k a year, you’d have to work 30 years to equal that.

Many thanks. Thought it was easy enough to understand but thank you for clarifying.

They get paid loads of money but it’s market forces/supply and demand. If the best 500 footballers in the world said they were going on strike mid-season unless they got paid an extra £25k a week, as much as they already earn, it will only be a matter of time before many of the same begrudging fans adopted a position of ‘For the love if God just pay them the fecking money!’.

I’m not sure, I know they play multiple games every day.

Had it on before I left the house today, they were replaying our Europa league run so far this season.

They play all the old derby games, Liverpool games and generally any classic games. They tend to put on old games relating to whoever we are playing next I’ve noticed.

You have to remember that football nowadays is more than a sport: is an entretainment industry. Players are being paid Hollywood contracts because they generate tons of money with their image rights, they are a big influence in social media, etc.

The hard work that goes into becoming a footballer too, no less at the elite levels... no social life, some miss the key school years ages 14-18, not to mention the hard graft required to constantly improve and learn new aspects. It truly is admirable.

Nurses, doctors etc. obviously deserve to be paid WAY more than they do, but equally that's not the fault of football - although that sleazeball Matt Hancock might convince you otherwise.
