Should we start looking at loans?

This has nothing to do with Sancho but look at the success clubs have had this season with loans

Inter & Sanchez
Roma & Smalling
Arsenal & Ceballos
PSG & Icardi
Bayern & Perisic & Coutinho

Are we missing a trick here? Like I said ignore Sancho but if Barca for example were up for loaning Dembele or Coutinho again next season it's no brainer isn't it? Padding your squad with genuine quality without the pressure of having to play them due to their big transfer fee

Most seem to feel that you need to steer clear of any player not wanted at Real, Barca etc. We should get James on loan in my opinion.

Bayern had James on loan last season didn't they? Another example, if it's good enough for Bayern why not us?

Looks like a short term steal!

Has Sanchez been a success? He’s had a few good games at the end of the season, got a contract, and got injured.

We have Ighalo!

I don’t think we are missing anything, most big loans don’t work in the long term. We should only bring someone in on loan if there’s a good chance of bringing in someone long term, unless they are genuinely short term like Ighalo or Larsson.

I wouldn't mind loan signings with an non-committed option to buy. So we can skip out if it doesn't work, and execute the option if it does.

But we did try LOAN - Falcao.

I guess the only surplus winger available for loan, is Dembele, but I can't recall he is right wing. BTW, Bale is definitely NOT a right wing, nor Daybala.

Bale and Dembele are most certainly right wingers.

Coutinho is not a success. Bayern don't want him, neither do Barca nor does any other club with elite ambitions. The only club wanting him is Arsenal who are a banter club.

James was a disaster and like Bale, RM are going to waste those wages. Their last contracts were worse than Alexis.

Icardi was not a loan signing. It was designed as one to bypass FFP.

Ceballos is a success at a level of being an average player for the team that finished 8th in the league.

Same for Smalling and Roma, who finished well outside the CL spots in Serie A.

Sanchez if he can maintain his form can be considered a success.

This whole thread seems to be misguided. If Dembele was made available on loan with NO obligation to buy, we would likely take him. Outside of that, there are no players whom United would or should consider on loan, especially not Madrid's albatrosses in Bale and James (who are both not interested in playing and have stupid wages).

Bale a right winger - this is how far people would go to justify their argument.
Yikes, have you ever watched Bale play in the last 6/7 years mate? Virtually every game he's played has been Right Wing. Ronaldo (left), Benzema (Striker), Bale (Right) is how they got all that success.

Only Dembele can be a good shout for a season loan with an option to buy

HELLO
Should be all over them. It's been understated how much additions are necessary due to the crazy schedule. A few injuries and we're fecked - loans are perfect for getting people in whilst maintaining the rebuild Ole is doing.

I think there'll be more available than usual due to Covid albeit late in the window. We need to reduce the crazy drop off from starting lineup to the bench that we seen this season.

Yeah I'd agree with that.

Bale has 20 appearances this season. 16 of them on the right wing.

He's not the answer for us, but he's certainly a right winger.

Loans can still be very expensive.

If you look back at Falcao, how much did we pay for that one season? Loan fee + wages - an astonishing waste of money.

It’s not as if we are getting the player for free.

Most of these loans are only because no one can afford/ wants to actually buy the player - and are just a way of the parent club to get a proportion of the wages off the books for a year.

A number 10 would be nice. Although, the loaning club and player would know they’d be a Bruno back up, so probably not likely to come.

It would allow us to get rid of a couple players, without damaging the squad depth. I’m pretty worried about how the players are going to manage this season, given the short break and schedule.

Explain how Coutinho hasn't been a success? Just because Bayern don't want to turn it into a permanent move (because of the fee) he's done what they brought him in to do which is exactly my point, bring someone in to pad the squad as a short term option

You say this thread is misguided, why because you have differing opinions on the success of the players I mentioned? I didn't even include James in the OP either. Get off your high horse thinking you're the authority

The key question I would have is how much has Coutinho cost Bayern for the season in fees and wages?

For us, would that be a good investment or are we better off buying players permanently?

Hope, We Lose
Yes obviously we should be open to it when we dont want to commit on a player. There have been rumours that we wanted Coman on loan if the Sancho deal isnt going to happen. Not sure that loan will either, but Bayern do have Sane coming in. Maybe we'll try and buy him instead.

Other sensible options might be something like Kurzawa from PSG who hasnt played much this season as a left sided attacking fullback to compete with and sub in for Shaw when needed. Stuff like that. Douglas Costa, Rugani or Cristian Romero might be available from Juventus but they probably want to sell. Maybe if there are no buyers they'd take a few million for 1 season

If we're looking to save money but get in some quality, then a loan deal for Dembele might make sense. Reguilon is available for £20m, Roca is also about £20m, Malang Sarr is available on a free transfer, Buendia would be an inexpensive backup for Bruno. Alaba, Thiago and Alex Telles are all in the final year of their deals.

No,
It takes away game time and the chance to improve from our young players.

I think we paid £6m for the Falcao loan fee and his wages were apparently £265k per week.

It obviously was not a success, but if we bought Sancho and he stayed for 10 years, that’s about £11m per season in transfer costs plus whatever wages he’d be getting.

Falcao was a waste of money because he was bobbins, not because of the loan agreement per se.

If we decided to hold off on Sancho for a year, then I wouldn't completely hate the idea of Bale on loan for a season, if we could limit our contribution to his wages to the £250k a week we pay Rashford.

I mean, it's not ideal because Bale looks more or less done with football, but the downside is relatively limited if he's shite.

I agree he was poor, but you don’t tend to get good players on loan. That’s why the likes of James, Sanchez and Coutinho have been farmed out - it’s simply because clubs can’t sell them, and this is the 2nd best option.

Yes we should try. Look for Barca or Real that have big and expensive squads. Jovic or James on loan could work.

Loan who? If we're looking to get serious we shouldn't go for the bargain bin.

Icardi is a good striker but we opted not to go for him because of his troubling reputation (which in the end was the reason why Inter binned him).
Coutinho hasn't been a success and is going back to Barcelona.
Smalling and Sanchez arguably had it easier in Serie A because of the slower pace.
Ceballos has been hit and miss in a poor Arsenal side.

The only one on that list that has any potential to be a useful squad member is Perisic. He's a good utility man and wouldn't sulk if he was on the bench.

As for the one's available today.

Bale and James - That ship sailed many moons ago. James has been poor in all his loan spells and isn't worth it. Bale sicknote and on massive wages.
Dembele - would only make sense if its a loan with the OPTION to buy. History with injuries.
Coman - same as Dembele.

Like someone mentioned, a loan costs a lot of money so a deal should only be made if it can completely work in our favour like with Ighalo or the deals Bayern have made in the past. Otherwise, it's just pointless.

I'm not completely sold on the idea of loans, except if it is to fill a gap for the short term. We're moving in a direction where we look like we're playing the long-term game. Our forward line is exciting, young and fresh. If we're going to add any players to the squad, they should be players who will be with us for a long period of time and who will help the club to improve.

But, where we are struggling is squad depth. So, in that respect, getting in an additional attacking or midfield option to come in on the basis of adding additional quality to our bench would not be too bad a move at all. There is a huge gap between our starting 11 and bench, so a short term loan deal for a player or two wouldn't be too bad. Would I suddenly bench Martial because X player is on loan for example? No, I wouldn't. But, it would be handy to have an extra choice on the bench to give our players some rest when they are flagging in games, or just to improve the options there. Sorta like Ighalo, but, you know, I would ask Ole to actually use him.

So...

Loan players to replace our first team: no, I prefer getting in players for the long term
Loan players to improve our bench: potentially yes, that could be a shrewd move.

Yes.

A lot of top clubs do it and more will be doing it with recent circumstances. Fullback on loan would be perfect for us.

Youre right. Daybala is a left winger, Nightbala however is a right winger.
