Cried like a little girl during his saga. The whole situation was tragic. Hope he takes up the shirt number
I wonder what number he will take. Neither De Ligt or De Jong took on 34 after their big moves. Would be touching if he did. Otherwise, I guess we'll give him Rojo's 16 or Mata's 8 (if we sell him).

Ajax as a club and those associated with them seem so much more classy and mature than Dortmund and their lot. Night and day how they have behaved around a player wanting to leave.

Is his father more reliable then Romano? I bet Mark Goldbridge would say no

What's our record with Ajax players like? Our most recent one with Daley Blind doesn't fill me with much confidence with this transfer, he wasn't a flop but wasn't exactly a big success. Anyway we seem to have a good record with Dutch players so I take some comfort in that. Ajax has to be the best nurturing ground for young players.

He could be the next Bruno signing or Morgan Schneiderlin type... :nervous:

Anyway, I'm being optimistic and have faith with how many years we scouted him, since 18? He will be good.

Think there is only one other player (Jasper Olsen) other than Blind that we have bought directly from Ajax. We have bought players that have played for Ajax and gone onto other clubs before we have bought them. Stam, VDS and Zlatan for instance.

After watching some of his personal match highlights , he's very consistent with what he does in and around the box.
He'll always be in a good position, make the right decision whether to make a flick, make a dummy run or make a good though ball.

But he's very very safe in possesion, almost always pick the easy options. I don't know, maybe it's because he isn't required to make
a difficult task in possesion? He doesn't attempt that many between-the-line passes, which I find it very strange for an Ajax academy product.
Maybe Ole will encourage him to try more? Because if you look at his passes in and around the box, they are pretty good and incisive.

I like his tenacity among other things and I like we seem to be going for players with a good character so to say. Certainly an United DNA if you ask me.

I'm optimistic as well but because of his CL performances and my faith in Ole. So far imo he's been pretty solid with his signings. Hope this would be the same too.

It's worth noting the board and Ole generally don't just look at ability, they look at the character and personality of the player too.

As it's been pointed out in previous posts Ole asks players about how is 'so and so', e.g. when Maguire signed, he would ask Rashford before they went for the player about his character because of playing with them at International Level.

With VDB, Ole has Van der Saar who spent an extended time at United, he knows the expectations, and VDS was obviously a very intelligent guy, it's why he is in his position at Ajax now too.

Bergkamp said to VDB it would be a good move, VDS obviously gave Ole the green-light, and they know it's not just his ability but also his attitude that is a match.

It's another reason people like Upamecano would make sense, with asking Martial and Pogba about the player who are both world-cup winners, the same can be said for Sancho (Maguire, AWB and Rashford can vouch for him).

Thiago obviously Mata and De Gea has played with at National level.

United are going for these players not just because of their ability but their compatriots who can vouch for them as people as well as players that they are a 'United player' as pundits generally say.

The transfer policy must have changed back to buying young players, but having the right values, hungry to win titles versus coming for a pay day like Di Maria who clearly didn't want to be at the club.

Eh...fairly certain that we already have a player there who is not too shabby either. Maybe there was a bad connection during the call.

VDB primarily plays that role for Ajax so it makes sense.

Bruno/VDB
Pogba/McTominay
Matic/Fred

Sell Lingard, Pereira and Mata (free release).

This is a purchase that I have a very hard time understanding and therefore enjoy. When Fred and McTominay played together over a long period of time, they became really good together. I think we're pretty strong in the central midfield already. Therefore, I do not see that we are getting stronger with this purchase. McTominay should be in our starting 11 along with Pogba and Bruno. Fred and Matic are the alternatives to the central midfield, if I could decide. So I do not see that we have a need for Donny van de Beek.
We need Sid

From the little I've seen off highlights he gives me Herrera vibes, which is great to begin with

I remember where I was specifically when the £37m for Mata was announced. Our record transfer at the time, felt huge.
This is why the lack of spending between 2008-2013 was such a big strategic error. We could have got more bang for our buck in that period. In comparison to transfer fees afterward.

Wonder if Bruno will be playing wider then?
Might just be competition Bruno - and if he doesn't get in ahead of him then might be happy to play deeper.

Impossible to know really until the matches get started and we see how we line up and how he uses him.

Bruno looked knackered towards the latter half of the season, he's probably ecstatic that someone else can help with the burden of creating from midfield

Against the top 5/6 I don't think we could play them both but against a lot of the others it would be a high energy/high press midfield

He will be much better than Herrera in terms of advancing the ball. He is much better scorer. I loved Herrera but VdB is a much much better player. He will be great as a starter and he will be able to back up both Bruno and Pogba. Something that Ander could never do.

He is extremely functional with none of the flair, which is indeed a bit like Herrera but he is an entirely different player. His value is as a goalscoring midfielder who'll likely spend more time in the opposition box than Martial and Rashford put together.

I think if we don't get an RW/ Greenwood still doesn't improve his wingplay enough to impact the game from outwide, we might see
VdB in the centre and Bruno on the right. At least their interplay/movements will exploit the space better.

Exciting. But central. Will Greenwood be the starting RW?

Iv not seen an awful lot of him, but from I have, he looks more like lampard from a positional sense.
