I really don't get this whole, "he just wants to play golf and that hes generally disruptive" thing
When he joins up with Wales is that all he does as well?
He's clearly unhappy at Real and needs a change of environment. Do people not have their own experiences of being unhappy at work or where you live and need to change it up when things become stale.

United have been after him for like 5 seasons now. If he really wanted out, he would be here already.

He is still in Madrid because he doesn't want to push for a move.

Would his signing take playing time away from Greenwood ? That would be a concern. To put Bale in, one of Greenwood/Rashford/Martial would have to get out.

As someone said on Twitter, if we’re going for a golfer we may as well get Tiger Woods.

Those three players cannot and will not play 60 games each this season. We have the most compacted season in the history of the game. Game time will not be an issue.

I think if anything it would benefit them to have one of the most decorated and talented players in our lifetime playing alongside them.

There's been a lot of revisionism about Bale, but he is still fecking class.

He pushed for a move last season and they denied it last minute.

I'd definitely take Bale on loan. Wages be quite hefty, but if, and its a big if, he can remain fit for large chunks of the season, then I think it could prove to be a good stop gap. With Greenwood, it would also mean we wouldn't have to overplay him either.

We've finally gotten rid of Sanchez, not a chance I want Bale on anything more than a loan and I'm still not 100% sold on that either.

He’s 31 yes? Can he still run? I know technically he can but for 90 minutes?
Why the feck do people in the caf think people die at age 28?!?!?

Not when he's being paid a ridiculous wage that no one is willing to match.
...and that's the issue. A sports career is short, and for the absolute elite you would imagine it would kill them to spend their peak/last years on the bench, barely playing.

Can you imagine Ronaldo sitting on a bench for the last few years because he'd rather add £20m to his net worth instead? Messi? Rooney? Giggs? Scholes even came out of retirement because he couldn't bear the feeling that he still had something in the tank - something more to give. Even now he's regularly playing 5 a side because he loves this game, to quote Uncle Pat.

Bale has every right to sit on his contract, of course, but conversely people have every right to doubt his committment to the game and to getting the most out of his undoubted talent.

I'd take him on loan for a year if we don't get Sancho.
If we manage him well, he is still a fantastic player.

This sounds like the complete opposite of the sort of transfer strategy Ole is trying to implement. Too many things could go wrong. Surely there's other right sided attackers out there apart from Bale and Sancho?

I know but his knees and hamstrings are quite fecked for a professional footballer? The team cannot carry a player like we did with Sanchez. Also i do not know why Real aren’t playing him anymore when they are paying him 600K a week to be still at the club

Loan with an option to buy or a free transfer and 1 year contract are both decent options that will improve our squad.

We need to be paying him no more than half his current wage though.

He would undoubtedly improve our squad though.

I do think this is all a game still though to try and pressure Dortmund to lower their demands

Completely agree with that statement. Its not the direction ole is trying to go. However a loan without an obligation to buy and Madrid paying 50% or more of his wages with no loan fee involved could be alright. Class is permanent. Just look at Rodriguez against spurs (ok thats one game) but it lifted the everton dressing room. A 4 x champions league winner walking into the dressing room is bound to have an effect.

He is undoubtedly a talented player but there are two issues with having him here, be in on loan or on a permanent deal:

1) High wages, as other posters have pointed out

2) He is injury prone. Do we really want another player on high wages clogging up the treatment table?

None of them needed to cos they never found themselves in the same situation, it's just hypotheticals. Show me a player that was on a outrageous contract that decided to give it up for more playing time, there are players that take minor pay cuts, but Bale would be needing to take atleast a 60% cut before a European team would even consider him.

If Bale wants to come on loan it doesn't mean Sancho can't be signed, Bale could come as a striker on loan.

It's not like rotting on the bench at Madrid is good for Bale.

I think we as a fan base need to simmer our expectations on Greenwood a little. A top talent he most definitely is but he's not an RW and also if you can sign Bale on loan (who when fit is one of the best players around in that role) there should not even be a conversation about if Mason will lose minutes. He's 18 years old and would get minutes as No9 in the cups and also is backup RW to a new signing.

Most important thing is being in a position to win trophies - Greenwood will be an elite player in a few years but he will be a No9 and he's nowhere near the finished article yet.

Add in Bale is always injured and he'll likely get just as many minutes as if we signed no one ;)

We have Ighalo for that? Would be pointless to sign Sancho, Bale on Loan and Ighalo on Loan when we have Greenwood.

Signing Bale means Sancho will not happen this window.

I'd take Bale if RM covered a large portion of his wages, there was no loan fee, and we could get Reguilon for a reasonable fee and RM could only buy back Reguilon after 3 years for €45m.

On loan or a free, for £150-180k a week - I'd be all for it. If Madrid want to subsidise an extra £300k a week then power to them.

Any more than that and we should pass.

God almighty. Imagine this actually happens. Ole sitting next to him during the unveiling, pretending it was on the cards all along.

“I picked up the phone and rang Giggsy, and he spoke so highly of Gareth’s fitness and character. It was an easy decision to make from there.”

Sanchez most recently.

Fabrizio Romano has reported that Alexis Sanchez has left a staggering £17m on the table to quit Manchester United for Inter. The Chilean has agreed a massively reduced €7million per year salary at Inter in exchange for a long-term contract - due to his desperation to play regularly.
Rooney to Everton

Bill Kenwright: “He was so determined to come home and, as you know, he gave up half of his salary to do so."
Bonucci took a big pay cut to rejoin Juventus...and there was a lot of talk from high tier journalists about Neymar being willing to take a significant cut to rejoin Barca, but obviously that didn't pan out.

Those are just a few that I remembered reading.

Like I said, I don't think Bale is wrong to wait out his contract - but it is something you have to factor in when judging him as a potential option.
