Coronavirus in football

Leaving aside that this is Liverpool, two first team players getting this isn't good. I'd expect further outbreaks linked to international teams once players start travelling.

With cases going through the roof in general population and hospitals coming under more pressure, it won't take much for everything to be shut down again.

It would be a depressing autumn/winter with no sport, so hopefully Mane and Thiago recover, hopefully other cases are few and far between, and hopefully this virus fecks off soon.

I'm still none the wiser how Thiago contracted the illness.
I was under the impression that the players were in a bubble of sorts, I guess this doesn't extend to their families maybe?

Yeah but between the players themselves, there are no bubbles. They hug and high five on the field when goals are scored. None of the elbow bumps and all we saw initially. It's all for show. If a first team player gets it, he is unlikely to be the only one.

I really don't think there is any benefit to international friendlies at this stage.

As for qualifications it might be better to have them in mini tournaments like the CL & EL just gone.

All this international travel just isn't smart.
Guess that applies to CL too, damn this sucks.

Oxford v Crewe in League 1 is off. Couple of Crewe players, one tested positive the other with symptoms. Crewe wanted to play the game, Oxford manager Karl Robinson refused and the match is now called off.

One of the United women's team players, Katie Zelem tested positive about three weeks back. Casey Stoney (team manager) talked a bit about the recovery protocol this week. Katie is back in training, but not yet ready to train with the team.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/footbal...very-coronavirus-taught-valuable-lesson-says/

“It’s very much about keeping her heart rate at a certain level, because it is a virus that’s associated with cardiology,” explained Stoney, who likened Zelem’s staged recovery to following concussion protocols.

“To be honest, I didn’t really have a clue that that was the process, but I’m very much heavily led by the doctors and the medical team and we will always follow their guidance. People think you get a positive test, you quarantine for two weeks and you’re back out. It’s not like that, it probably puts a player out of action for a month really.

Interesting.

Interesting.
Liverpool will just pump Thiago and Mane full of PED’s and all will be good.

Have they officially stopped all the Covid precautions now in the prem (managers & staff hugging and shaking hands) or do people just not give a shit anymore?

Do we know if the players who had it and recovered are still showing signs of fatigue or playing sub-par? Does it have any (short term) impact on their performances?

Because I was reading somewhere that a significant number of younger patients recover but still show signs of fatigue for months.

Pogba? But it's most likely the lack of pre season. Hopefully.

The only mention of the rehab phase that I've seen has come from Casey Stoney (United women's team manager). The club doctors told them that they had to phase the recovery training, and be careful on heart rate when one of the players returned from quarantine. She likened it to following a concussion protocol.

So even a player with low level symptoms during the illness might not be ready to play for a month. Presumably, that means for some of them it will take longer.

This is quite a disturbing report on what can happen - it found myocarditis in a number of young athletes returning post covid. But, it's a small study and they didn't have pre-covid scans of the same athletes to compare the results with. Even so, 4 out of 26, is a pretty disturbing sign.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/16/...affecting-the-hearts-of-college-athletes.html

Certainly it's considered a big enough issue that https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/54/19/1130 have been warning doctors working in sports medicine about it since August. I assume that's where the post-covid protocol that Casey Stoney talked about comes from.

In terms of professional football, I've not heard of any players being ordered to take a couple of months off, following complications, but apparently it has happened in other sport in the US. I guess it's a wait and see thing really.

From an England perspective, it makes the actions of Sancho, Abraham, and Chilwell doubly stupid. Especially after they watched the furore around Mason and Foden unfold.

They even took pictures!

Assuming they are all tested quite regularly ( or so they tell us) and are all negative so why a need for the seperation on the bench etc anyway?

Just makes u feel the Sancho respitory virus thing is odd as feck, if dortmund had no intention of selling - if he was sick he would of been signed off sick by club doctors, not authorised to travel when they had a match that weekend - so he signs off sick and goes to a party and nobody is asking dortmund why he flew to a party in england when signed off sick?

We all know the answer but nobody ever asks the clubs the big questions that we all want answered! I'm sure most of us have a good few questions for our board.

I dont know why but I find players running to the corner flag celebrating a goal in empty stadiums quite amusing.

Think it’s pretty clear that they would have sold him if if they got the fee that they wanted.

The fact he’s been to a party etc only confirms this for me.

I dont think the media care what the real story is as its against the agenda of united being deluded when in reality he was either on strike or over in england waiting for a deal to be done

I can't believe there are still people crying about not have supporters in the stadium. Some people even saying that they'd rather have no football at all, without supporters.

Personally, I think it should be possible to have a limited number of fans in the stadium, but would the shepherding of them not cause all sorts of issues, as to make it more trouble than it's worth?

We are lucky to have any football on at the moment, enjoy it while it lasts, I say. Alright, watching United isn't much fun at the moment, but you know what I mean.
