Huge win against a very good team. We were the better side and deserves the 3 points and probably should have won more comfortably.

Absolutely delighted with that win, and particularly the performance.

Feel like Rashy needs a rest though, looks off the pace and is struggling to make an impact.

Thank god for Bruno and Cavani!
Why does Rashy always need a rest?

I remember saying the same thing most of last season, maybe even the one before.

He should be one of the fittest players out there but seemingly always needs a rest because he's not 100%.

Washed up Cavani redeeming himself. Sancho wasn't going to play 2 positions when someone got suspended or injured

EL MATADOR!!

Starting to think defenders aren’t intimidated by our Strikers when there is no room behind them. They have little movement off the ball, and don’t seem to be clinical inside the box unless its a counter attack.

We were stupid to conceded two goals from dead ball situations, aside from that Southampton didn’t produce much from open play, which had me feeling like we were always in it.
Wasted a lot of chances, would like to see us fix that sooner rather than later.

Last minute winner aside, we showed some versatility tonight. Great to see.

It was a while since Man Utd striker scored two diving headers in one game. Great job Edinson, 2G+1A!

Bruno was also good with 1+1

Lucky lucky Ole. Fecked team selection as usual, saved by the genuine striker.

Matic should never start such matches. He can be good against superior teams, when we are defending a lead.

Bruno after the knock lost his pace and concentration. Yet a goal and assist, not bad eh.

Finally, Rashford needs a rest.
Sorry but to call that lucky is crazy talk. Great game by Ole. We pissed all over them from the first minute. The xg says it all. Saints are not very good. A better manager would not have lost that from 2-0 up but who cares about them. Win our game in hand against Burnley and we’re 2 points off the top. Give Ole some credit.

Cavani is 33y old, can't play every game, super-sub is perfect for him.
Nah. His fitness is fantastic. Needed to build it but he needs to be used in majority of games. Nothing about him looks "old", and his impact as a goalscorer changes everything for us as we can all of a sudden score goals against smaller teams if he's in. He'll take those chances and the movement will make chances.

Fred a close runner up for the man of the match. Rashford vindicated with that assist at the end, still I think he should've been taken off instead of Mason. Bruno was poor pretty much the entire game, but he's got class and when you have a class you only need a moment to show it.
First goal's fault is on the entire team - players, coaches, manager. They knew very well Southampton's ability to take the most out of set pieces and I'm sure they've talked and trained about it. Ole mentioned it at the his pre-match talk how we allowed Southampton to score from a set piece in the last two meetings. Yet, first corner they get we allow them to score. Poor.
Second goal was ... it was. Great strike. May be De Gea from 5 years ago could've saved it.

Still think the game should've been put to bed within the first 25 minutes. We didn't and we had to work really hard to earn the win. Credit to the players for the hard work and especially Fred, who was everywhere.

Perfect example of how goals and results is everything in football. I couldn't watch the first half, but heard United were trailing 1-0. Got home in time for the 2nd half, and United were now trailing by two goals. At that moment it felt like it was going to be hard to keep faith in this project, that once again United looked a bit bereft of ideas going forward, and already made things impossible for themselves. I also thought Cavani looked rusty, and gave away possession too cheaply. Then all of that changes into me now thinking the team showed great spirit, togetherness and work-mentality - and that they bossed that second half. Also, Cavani ends up getting two goals and an assist. From "here we go again" to "it's all positive" in 20 minutes or so. My knees are hurting from all the jerking.

feck off Southampton. Kicked the shit out of United in the first half, got undeserved two goal lead and then couldn't touch United second half because you couldn't play on the counter nor close down the spaces. fecking clowns.

Got to love a late winner!

Thought we were unlucky to be behind at half time, pleased to see heads didn't drop.

Cavani making a very strong case!

Some interesting and very emotive comments, naturally. My thoughts are that it was a v poor game in terms of quality (who played well, and I mean on either side ???? ) aside from Cavani, who showed his class.

Don't, please don't tell me we played well, and don't have a go because I make such statements. That was two mid table teams going at it.

I cannot stand OGS as our manager, that's all I think when I watch us. There's nothing about us, at all, Southampton were rubbish. Rubbish.

Can't OGS see how we are playing?? Is he satisfied with this?

I am sorry, and I mean that, but I am not letting a win cloud my judgement. Does OGS really want us to compete for the Premiership title and Champions League? Because I cannot see it in our performances.

We're just another team, relying on inspirational moments. Bruno usually provides that, and today it was Cavani.
Worst post of the year?

The result doesn't reflect just how much better we were. We had 11 or 12 good chances, all from open play. Southampton had 2 chances from open play and 2 chances from set pieces, both of which ended up in goals.

Plus, whoever was that poster that was saying "I thought no pogba + vdb in was a win always?", get absolutely fecked.

VdB's passing in tight areas is on another level.
VDB was great in those moments and so important however I felt the midfield lacked any bite, especially with him in it.

Fantastic comeback win, although never should have been behind in the first place. Forwards need to far more clinical in their finishing.

Don't see how Pogba gets back into this team as a starter. Whatever we can get for him, I'd be putting towards a top CDM. Some decent shielding ahead of the defence would make such a massive difference to this side.

That was like the good old days scoring that winner. Literally dancing round the living room on my own!

More than Deserved the 3 points on the balance of the game. Typical United they had to give us all heart failure on the way!

I was doubtful about the Cavani signing I admit but to see the difference a world class genuine number 9 offers us when we haven’t had it for so long is a joy to see!

Huge 3 points - get in!!

Cavani is a beast still. I was skeptical about him, but he surely is a must today. And I'll say it right now, our best formation with two strikers is Cavani and Martial. Rashford is performing below par for a while and should be getting more criticism than the Frenchman.

Would any of Rashford, Martial, Greenwood or James have scored either of those two goals?

Not in a million years.

Well, if Ole still doesn't know who to start at 9 then he never will!

Like the good 'ol days a comeback steeped in history. 2-0 down to win in the 92nd min...satisfying! And against the dirty fouling team, even better.

Cavani is the man. I don’t think Rashford and Martial could have scored the two goals he scored today. His anticipation and movement is world class.

We looked really lost in the first half I must say. Second half got better as it went on.

Cavani surely has to be in with a shout of being the starting CF now.

We were by far the better team over the 90 minutes. Southampton are no mugs and we've struggled there in recent years.

He's an amazing player Bruno... felt that was arguably his worst game but still he produces. What a player.
Yeah kept giving the ball away but still scored a goal.... Even on his worst day he is always a threat.

I take credit for this win. 55 mins in and I turned off the game knowing there’s no way we win. Then goes and scores 3 goals. You’re welcome lads:keano:

a few good things
for the most part, i liked the formation and system played. The only problem I saw was the lack of movement to support the flanks by our forwards in the first half, which Cavani fixed. Greenwood had an off game, I feel rashford was just as bad. One thing about our midfield, I prefer Fernandes playing deeper with VDB pushing up. Matic Fred and AWB struggle with bringing out the ball, and with VDB's minimalist style, even though it works as part of a 2, the lack of space allowed in the midfield makes his involvement too anonymous. Fernandes is a dynamo, constantly looking to create chances regardless of what is available. I also liked Telles, his passing forward was really good, and his crosses give us another attacking option. The defence was also well defended.

Finally, Cavani showed us what an actual no.9 looks like. Cavani has the option of 2 years here. Him as our main option for this period, will allow Greenwood to develop in that role. I'm done with Martial playing there. The two forward system will give all four of our main attackers plenty of opportunities, but it seems like we have found a second reliable attacker in Cavani.
