I’m honestly delighted, I know Villa could have easily snatched a point, but let’s be honest, it’s hard playing so much over Christmas.

We deserved the win, we created so much I thought and we would have had the clean sheet but for some brain dead defending.

Fabulous start to the year against a good side. Villa will get points against teams above them this season, their improvement has been remarkable. Our decision making can really be daft sometimes, Pogba and Rashford should've just held on to that ball. To not mark Grealish by either AWB or McT for their goal was also disappointing. Martinez and Grealish kept Villa in the game but on another day Pogba makes it 3-1 and it's comfortable.

On the other side, Bailly is worth his weight in gold. Loved the team's pile up on him, they know what that block meant. Marital, Pogba and AWB played well too. Bruno and Rashford desperately need a rest. It probably won't be next game, but I don't want to see them near the team sheet vs Watford.

I'll give credit to the coaching team, they've managed to put Pogba and Bruno in the same side without sacrificing defensive stability. Matic coming on for an underperforming McT was good too. The squad management has been good so far, hope it continues.

City next. I wouldn't be surprised if we named an unchanged 11. The team was quite good today.

That was an entertaining game, both teams played some good stuff, our first goal was glorious where as we gifted them their goal when AWB left Grealish to go to the dead ball. Great 3 points, winning these tight ones should build confidence and belief.

Another win against a team who have been this year's dark horse. 4 home wins in a row. Equal top on points.
Momentum building superbly.

That was a very good performance against a good Villa side and did deserve the 3 points in the end.

I celebrated that Bailly block like a goal ngl

Crapping on the club? Are you mental you lunatic? Just saying what actually happened on the pitch, if you cant take the reality scroll down.
What happened on the pitch is that we beat a very tough Villa side. Is that really not good enough?

Thought we played really well. I’d go as far to say second best team performance after Leeds.

There seems to be a lost more mental toughness this season, much more than in previous seasons. Lads aren’t letting their heads drop.

Not really that arsed about the cups, onto Burnley which as always, will be a very tough game

Important result. Pogba my MOTM but big shout out to Bailley who was excellent too.

Great 2nd half of football, how have villa changed so much this season? McGinn and Greilish are quality but we deserved the win and we’re looking difficult to beat.

Loads of games coming up and it’s about managing the players game time, I’m getting a bit worried about Bruno, looked tired even though he was pissed at coming off but loved the celebration at the end with Bailley, shows the team ethic.

Great win. Excellent because the 2nd goal was a PEN from Bruno PENandes or glorified Charlie Adam.

Referee was inept. Credit to Villa and especially Grealish. We should sign him. I hope Ole bugs the board as that would help in easing Bruno's burden.

Pogba was good. He was everywhere. Bissaka was excellent. DeGod with great saves and MOTM should be given to Bailly.

One game at a time....... it's boring but we need to stay grounded.
Without doubt, but there’s a massive difference between knowing believing your ceiling is scraping top four and believing you’ve got a shot at the trophy.

What showed me the boys believed it’s the latter is how they all went to Bailly after the final whistle. It’s on.

Huge win against a very good side. We are finally now nicking these tight tense affairs where in the last couple of seasons, we certainly would have drawn or even lost that game tonight.

Pogba was excellent. Call me cynical but the transfer window is opening.....

The Bailly block at the end was magnificent. I was up like we’d scored a 30 yard screamer!

Onwards and joint feckin top with the scouse mob! Get in

Great game, great 3 points, joint top. It came with some awful defending but also a brilliant Bailey performance. Maguire was a passenger as usual, Bailey made him look like he was a 6 out of 10. AWB was good, but a careless mistake, similar to 2 goals we conceded to Spurs. I thought Shaw was awesome, always getting forward amd waiting for the overlap. Mctominay was terrible as usual, i would love to see DVB in that position but he is Ole's favourite. Pogba was great, Martial looks sharp and Rashford wasteful and bad decision making. It is early days, i don't think we will win the league but it is a great feeling to be near the top again. Burnley next and then the big one at Liverpool. Hopefully they drop more points at Southampton.

Excellent performance today, from the manager to all the players bar McT. If I were to list a few players who put in exceptional performances, it would be DDG, Bailly and Pogba. Brilliant by them 3, but while it’s unfortunate that Pogba is gone in the summer, Grealish was sensational too and will be a more than able replacement.

And come on lads, some of you have to chill the post-match moaning after a performance like this. We were good and could have scored more against a very good side with excellent players who are on top form. If we really played badly, we’d have ended the game with a loss and a possible result like 7-2 (Liverpool), 0-3 (Arsenal) or 0-1 (Leicester). Chelsea also could and maybe should have lost against them just a few days ago, and while you can’t guarantee future results, we can be sure that they will give Spurs a right old game.

Also, some of you are complaining that they had more ball possession than us. Who cares lads? I care about two stats: goals scored and shots on target, and we triumphed in both.

All in all, fantastic performance and result. Happy new year lads! :)

I agree that the first sub was a good choice. Mctominay was sloppy vs Villa. Having said that, I would have changed Bruno and Rashford around the 80th minute. DvB and Greenwood in.
I understand James got in for the counter attacks and Tuanzebe for the corners.

McGinn and Ruiz, who are not world class, dominated Fred and McTominay so there is still room for improvement. Fred and McTominay were poor and frequently gave the ball away.

Bailly immense once again. Stay fit son and we are in the title race.

Where the grass is greener.
We deserve to be where we are. A few weeks ago I was baffled at how high we were in the table, but we're one of the most consistent teams in the league now and I'm not surprised with our position. I just hope we can keep this spirit and drive up.

Don't think we can fit Grealish in unless he would play from the right wing.

If Pogba was to leave though he's a like for like player if we need a creative midfielder.

Not sure why some saw this as a 'ugly' win. Maybe gritty but not ugly. This Villa team are not to be taken lightly & Grealish has won me over. Some better finishing would have put some polish on the win, but we played well.

Yeah, sure and they tore through us easily and could have scored a hat full of goals.
Yes because they are a good team. We also could have scored a hatful.

My thoughts exactly, Pogbas resurgence is all about making sure hes being seen by Juventus etc to be a model pro; if he turns around tomorrow and says he wants a new United contract Id be delighted but he isnt going to, he doesnt want to be a Manchester United player any longer than he can help it and in that case the sooner he goes the better.

All true.

It's such a long way to go though.... fingers crossed we keep the consistency.

A great game of football and a massive 3 points. Thoughts on players:

DDG: Coming back to his best I’d say, making some great saves. Still a bit to go but getting there.
AWB: Great cross for the goal, stupid brain-fart for the equaliser, great defending to stop the equaliser with his high boot. Was discussing with another group chat, we all forget he’s only 22yrs old with 2 full PL seasons under his belt. The kid needs experience.
Bailly: If we could guarantee 40 games a season from him I don’t think we’d have a CB issue. Lots of his mistakes and rash moments are due to lack of match fitness (thinking of the yellow card because of his poor touch). Great block to save the points in the end.
Maguire: Similar to DDG, I think he’s now getting in his groove again.
Shaw: seems to have kicked in now we have decent competition for his spot. Not a great deal of output but pressed high, won the ball back and moved it to players that could do something with it.
McT: Poor, ran around a lot and a few good passes but not great.
Fred: A bit better than McT. Not his best game.
Rashford: Thought he tried to do too much at times, like when he knocked the ball when Martial was running on to hit it early in the 2nd half.
Bruno: What else is there to say, would have been capped off with that thunderbolt that the GK tipped on to the bar.
Pogba: Don’t care if he’s playing for a move, if he plays more like that then it’ll only be better for us.
Martial: I thought he was quietly great. Had great hold up play (which I think he’s wildly underrated at), took his chance well and was a great threat.
