How come Ole can only get a semi? | Can he finally go all the way?

Type of games where getting the tactics spot on and getting late equalisers/winners are much less likely. Over all 4 I think it’s been a mix of bad luck, poor performances, and poor squad selection.

Unlucky to play City
You want to win trophies you need to beat good teams.

It isn't a good look under Ole now, 4 lost in less than 12 months. Apparently Maguire's lost 9 semis in a row as well. Would anyone be confident if we're in a title race with 5 games to go?

Even though we lost, my god are we improving.

Grealish instead of Pogba today and we win that game.
Comments like these don't make sense, the players were outfought on multiple fronts today. A few were glaringly bad but Pogba wasn't one of them. Just accept that it was a crap team performance instead of singling players out.

That wasn’t Ole’s fault tonight. Picked the right team, tactics were fine, players massively let him down, especially the boys upfront. Very disappointing performance.
He needed to make changes with the under performers being brought off and he failed to do so.

For our third best ever manager, this is a disappointing result.

More seriously, I feared the worst after seeing just how good City were against Chelsea.

I can't say I think he should have done a whole lot different tonight.

Just a reminder that we need:
1. A CB
2. A DM (Fred, McTominay and Van De Beek as #2, 3 and 4 on the depth chart competing to be first choice next to that player)
3. A new striker or a RW to pair with Rashford and whoever emerges from Martial/Greenwood/Diallo (hopefully Greenwood but maybe sell Martial and replace him with a more dangerous striker).

Biggest mistake for me was by Pep not putting Foden on the right to run at Maguire, who looked heavy footed and ready to give up a pen or get straight beaten but Sterling looked jaded. He wanted to keep Sterling away from Wan-Bissaka sure, but there were enough breaks where Shaw got caught up field and De Bruyne hit Sterling that I think Foden would have gotten the best of Maguire tonight.

When you create nothing all game with this «right team and fine tactics», should not something happen? Obviously the tactics weren’t fine, as we created nothing, we didn’t sub the players that weren’t working. We didn’t shock them so to speak by doing changes, both tactics and players, so no... it wasn’t fine.

City are a fine team and they are now on form, obviously much better when things are clicking, but we should want it more than this.

I would have liked Ole to make changes faster (around 60 min mark). First sub was at 75 min.

Rashford was wasteful and non-threatening at RW, so bringing in Greenwood would have been better and shifting Rashford back to LW

City defended well Today and against Chelsea
The better Team won but can’t fault our Team/players
Everyone gave their all
We can’t win every game
Onto the next game
Let’s start another 10 game unbeaten run

City definitely wanted it more than us but it was the second half performance that killed us. We were matching them in the first half and completely capitulated in the second. I’m not saying that Ole doesn’t take some responsibility but the entire front 4 chose a great night to put in their worst performances this season.

City are a good team so I don’t think it’s too upsetting to lose against them. There remains this sense of nervousness in the squad when the pressure is really on. That’s why I don’t think we will be anywhere near winning the league.

Ole has to learn to change things quicker when we aren’t playing well. It’s too predictable to wait until the 70th minute before he makes a change.

Rashford and Martial have to step up as well. I’ve seen today Rashford is deemed one of the most valuable players in the world. That’s only because he’s English. He doesn’t win games on his own. Martial has been given so many chances now and he’s not taking them. Will be happy to see him replaced and sold now. He will end up back in France with a nothing career.

The tactics generally were fine. Our attack just wasn’t clicking tonight though, due in part to a lack of CF in my opinion. We badly missed Cavani.

He is just not good enough as a manager. There is something mentally wrong with us under him.

Really soft team in these do or die games. The only one we haven’t bottled is Leicester last season.

9 in a row? You're joking

It wasn't a bad performance. We were just about OK. Against a lesser side, we qualify.
Only problem is you can't be OK in a semifinal and expect to qualify against a good team.

I am not that perturbed about the result. I hope the boys don't lose much confidence from this match. I just don't understand why Ole played a full strength team here. I am not sure, but a reality check for the players?. When will VDB get a start if not in this match? I just can't wrap my head around this selection. I was really hoping some of these players get some rest. I am more disappointed about the team selection than the result.

Won't go overboard but this is very concerning.

Of the 4 semis we reached no reason we shouldn't have one one or two.

God help us if we get to a final.

Anyway if we win nothing this season I'm not sure this can continue.

Where the grass is greener.
We looked tired tonight, they certainly looked more energetic. But the facts are we look like this in semi finals far too often, just slow sloppy and a bit like we don't actually believe we can win, which is fecking worrying.

I think a proper striker would have made a huge difference. The game was calling for someone like Cavani. It's a shame he's suspended.

To be fair, although this is an issue that we always lose the crucial games, the fact we’re getting there is still a positive for me.

Some United teams under LVG and Moyes wouldn’t have got a look in in that CL group and would have got turned over by some absolute shite early in the cup competitions. It’s a hurdle we will clear if we keep getting there...

I'm worried that this will become a mental barrier for the squad, Ole, the nearly man but leaves us fans high and dry and gagging for someone else to come and mount us

Or maybe we just lost to a better team.

When Jose won the league cup our Semi opponent was Hull over two legs. Big difference.

Tonight he could have played a fresh 11.

Instead all of our completely fresh players were on the bench or sat at home.

He'll never win anything because he doesn't rotate the squad enough.

Henderson
Williams Tuanzebe Lindelof Telles
McTominay Fred
VdB
Mata Greenwood James

I genuinely didn't give a shit about todays game if it meant we had our best 11 ready to play against Burnley and Liverpool. Those two wins would have left us 6 points clear in the Premier League in January.

This fecking idiot plays the majority of our best players who need a rest and LOSES anyway.

He hasn't got the nous to manage at this level. I don't give a shit about semi finals or 2nd places. Would prioritise the chance of winning the league over a Carabao Cup final or trophy.

Imagine being VdB, not starting the past few games, it comes to a tournament you've started every round and WON every game. Only to find out your on the bench. Oles not saving VdB for Burnley is he???

That's why the Ole out thread was closed prematurely.
