Can anyone explain why no one at the club took these statistics into account when going into a penalty shootout?

Like, you have a keeper who's clearly levels above at saving penalties and you don't take the opportunity to sub him in.

Edit- left number signifies pens saved, right signifies not saved

That can't be 8 saves out of 11? That would be ridiculous, and, yes, I would have no answer as to why you wouldn't sub him in in that case.

Even if its 8 saved, 11 conceded, it is a great record. Still, no answer.

De Gea must have had an unbelievable record before he came to us, because he's saved about 2 in the last 10 years.

The commentator seemed to know the stats. Mentioned hendo has 6 saves, think he said last few seasons. Certainly well since De Gea's last one.

Second they mentioned that you knew it was destiny he wouldn't save one.

But no-one expected to let in 11 and then miss one. That was cruel beyond belief.

It's not unreasonable to think Henderson might have at least got close to saving at least one of 11 penalties. He probably would have fancied himself to save one too, De Gea looked like he had about as much belief in himself as we did.

This is a good point. They clearly do the homework for the takers (Telles and Mata coming on) so why wouldn’t you make a sub for the most important specialist position in a shoot out, the keeper.

Henderson is a different type. Much more self confident. That helps saving penalties

11 out of 53 pens saved, excluding the 11 from today count too?

Still a shocking rate though. :houllier:

I reckon Henderson does more than just drop to his knees on every other penalty he faces and for that reason, I'm in.

Ole is aware of the stats. I believe he's about to sub on Henderson any minute now. Perhaps during the post match conference he will.

DDG's last penalty save was over 5 years ago, 23 Apr 2016, against Lukaku (Everton) in FA Cup. He couldn't save his ass since then.

Another thing I noticed: Bruno seemed to win the toss to decide the penalty order… and we went second. Statistically that is a losing move.

Pogba being subbed off too suggests penalties weren’t really prepared for.

Always easy to say in hindsight. De Gea deserved to start. Game should be finished off in 90 min anyway. Not his fault. I doubt Henderson would have done much better even.

Jesus fecking Christ. Some of you cannot see the forest for the trees.

If we had an actual decent manager, Henderson could have actually been subbed on.

And in any case, if we need pens to win the fecking EL final against fecking Villarreal.

It was a disaster from start to finish, no idea why we opted to go 2nd. There's so much pressure.

But, we made mistakes leading up to the shootout. There was zero reason to play for penalties with 30 mins of normal time left and then additional 30 mins of ET. Still, I find it criminal none of the staff could convince Ole to sub in Henderson for shootout. Even, prime De Gea was poor at saving penalties.

There's too much sentimentality with Dave. It's a no brainer with his pen record that you would have Hendo in goal instead. A missed opportunity.... but I think Ole will learn...

I said the same thing to my mate ,

If I know Hendo has a good record at saving pens and Dave doesn’t,

why the hell doesn’t the manager and coaching staff of Manchester United not know this.

I’m sick to death of having unqualified clowns be in charge of stuff at our club when they shouldn’t be, Ole, Carrick, McKenna, Ed, Murtough, that wanker with the round glasses and big grin, can’t be arsed searching for his name

This is what I think happened. Unfortunately, you can't be sentimental in a cup final. What's one man's feelings as opposed to the team/club/fans' feelings? He won't make that mistake again I don't think.

I got chastised by a poster saying Ole should have subbed him for Dean. And while I wasn't completely serious, players need to know their strengths and weaknesses and be man enough to step aside. And others need to be man enough to made the tough call regardless.

Yes but It doesn't matter at the end as all our 10 outfield players scored anyway. No difference to the outcome even if we went first.
