There arent that many commentators around these days who seem to pull off quality commentary.

Tyler has fallen into soundbite land in the past decade. Tyldesley has moments but also falls into that rehearsed soundbite territory too. Matterface tries too hard to be like the former two and his time as being a radio commentator still shows.

Brian Moore and Barry Davies were two guys who seemingly carried off great commentary. I never understood why Motson was over Barry Davies in preference for BBC, other than Motson was a bit of a statto.

Most commentators would have said "Denmark are a man down" or Denmark are down to ten" but Sam Matterface comes off with "Denmark are missing a member of staff", its a football team Sam not that Tracey from accounts is out of the office for a few days.

Can't wait to see ITV figures for the final, competing with the Beeb that a) has no adverts and b) has no matterface

They'll struggle to get 5 million

Tbf Clive Tyldesley does clearly rehears opening monologues that were/are kinda cringe. Matterface does take it to a whole other level though.

Also, anyone else notice that the commentary was slightly behind the action last night? Not that it matters, I'm going to stick the game on whichever channel is easiest, press mute, and then play Three Lions on repeat for 90+ minutes.
No room for world in motion? :(

Yeah I noticed that, was half a second behind the action.

By my calculations, Lee Dixon 237 times more enjoyable to listen to than Jermaine of Jenas.

Thus ITV pisses on the BBC.

Has to be the BBC for me. Yes I have to contend with the tedious forced banter between the likely duo of Mowbray and Jenas but Matterface + Sourpuss Souness +adverts, always going to be one winner.

What’s the ITV presenter’s name? I’m not sure I’ve ever seen him before.

He’s infinitely more tolerable.
Hmm..

Not sure. Did you not watch his commentary on the Champions League semi-finals? I was expecting his cum to drip down on the city players heads at any given moment.

He's also absolutely clueless about football. He lacks basic knowledge. He can't even call the ball going out of play correctly the first time without a slow motion replay when the guy standing on Mars could see it went out.

Take him over Lee Dixon.

l'll start watching it on BBC. If England are moments away from losing, I'll quickly turn it over to ITV so I can hear Matterface's tears.

What do we think the peak combined audience will be for this across both channels?

A commentator's job is to point out things I can't see, either because it's off-camera or because it's not clear on the screen. Anything more than that is a bonus.

I don't mind Jenas or Keown. They're bland, but it's not any worse than watching the match in the stadium when there's no commentary at all.

The only kind of commentary I object to is from people who make obvious factual mistakes (ie. about a player's identity) or who bang on about the same point over-and-over or who try to make the occasion about themselves as individuals rather than the players on the pitch.

I can accept somebody who has a different opinion from me. But move on after you've made your point (Robbie Savage). And don't think you're more important than the game (Sam Matterface).

I'll mostly be watching the BBC for the lack of adverts. And, let's be honest, so will the vast majority of people in England. A tournament final is a shared cultural experience. So if you're not watching on BBC One, you'll be missing out on that shared aspect.

“You’ve had a terrible 16 months; kids you can stay up, don’t you dare go to bed. The rest of you, call your boss, you ain’t coming in in the morning.

“You deserve this. England deserve this. Feel it, ride it. All that outpouring of emotion is just 50 seconds away.

Just try to be safe and follow the rules. Otherwise, I’m going to be in one hell of a load of trouble."

Truly terrible stuff from Matterface. What a shame England’s best moment in 55 years had such shite commentary. Apparently England deserve this as the only country to have suffered the pandemic.

He deserves to be sacked.

Any commentator worth their salt would have just shut the feck up, and let the atmosphere from the crowd at the final whistle do all the talking.

Matterface described a break in play as "an NFL basketball timeout".

He's a moron.

BBC for me Sunday.

Matterface is garbage but that's obviously not what he meant.

I can't get as upset with commentators as some of you lot seem to.

Same with pundits.

The vast majority of fans just want some easy to understand stuff that most of us would say when discussing games with pals.
Not some pseudo intellectual stuff.

That said, Jenas is clearly bland to an outrageous level, and it's baffling that the powers be seem to be grooming him to be the top man.

Rio would be a better co-commentator for the BBC tomorrow. Informative, to some degree, but fundamentally has charisma.

Me too, but not for that reason.

I heard on the radio this morning that back in 1966 ITV didn't join the match until the 30 minute mark, due to Coronation Street!

I mean if that happens tomorrow, I wouldn't be very happy.

Is that really true? WOW imagine that, tuning in for WC final and getting the Rovers Return (or whatever the pub is called)instead

Don't recall that at all. BBC beat ITV hands down in the ratings even though ITV had Hugh Johns who was every bit a great commentator as Ken Wolstenholme. I recall that ITV had coverage from the morning as they usually did but never recalled the Corrie bit. I can't imagine that's true; it was the biggest thing in English sport and still is. ITV had Barry Davies as well and he never mentioned it in his career retrospective

Then again like the majority, I watched BBC

In 1970, I was split between ITV and BBC

The more I read of this thread, the more I'm considering ITV tomorrow. I don't want to miss out on Matterface's Partridge-isms.

Jeans isn’t as bad as some as yous make out. He just has developed some kind of arrogance that his word is gospel.
