Surprised another club hasnt thought about hijacking this deal. Im going to put money on that Chelsea will get him over us as London is more attractive and 2, they have an actually elite level manager.
Oh I see where we are going with this….you’re one of THOSE fans ;)

Chameleons. I've always been fascinated by them. The way they blend into their surroundings but can be so beautiful and worthy of attention when they let their true colours show.

I'm a chamelon. In a way. On the face of it, I'm just like any other poster. Pretty unremarkable right? Wrong. See, I'm a real visionary of the game. I don't like to flaunt it, frankly I don't want the attention that comes with it. But I feel I must raise ny head above the parapet just this once.

You could liken me a bit to Peter Taylor, I suppose. Peter Taylor was Clough's right hand man. Another visionary. Clough once said that Taylor could 'assess a player better and quicker than anyone else in the game'. Ha, sounds like me alright. Funny that.

Peter Taylor died in 1990. I was born in 1995. Either by pure coincidence or grand design, chameleons have a lifespan of 5 years, I'm not suggesting that I'm either Peter Taylor or a chameleon reincarnated, it hasn't crossed my mind and if you want to make that connection its entirely your choice to do so and maybe you'd be smart for doing it but no, I'm just here to say this.

Varane is a player. And you can print that
We need more of this sort of big Chameleon driving his red flag, hard into the deep moondust energy in this thread!

It's short sighted to think that this haggling is for Varane. We're haggling over £5m (reportedly) to solidify our stance on future transfers.

We developed a transfer culture of always paying the asking price, even when it we were obviously being ripped off. A conscious decision has been made to change tactics and it requires patience. We called Dortmund bluff last summer, fully prepared to lose out. Looks like we are doing it again. Clubs will know in future not to play chicken on negotiations, because we aren't as easy to move as we once were.

We give in and our future stance on transfer fees becomes very movable in the eyes of opposition.

I've no doubt that Varane is joining, be it now or end of the window. On one hand I want Varane to join ASAP to make a smoother transition. On the other hand, waiting for a good deal makes sense if we're serious about midfield reinforcement.

I think the first cash installment will be the main sticking point. If we can get Varane for a lower cash amount this year, we can spend more towards a midfielder and improve the team even further.

Feck me, pay the extra 5m and get him in ASAP. When will we finally decide to start the season like proper title challengers? Get your players in early. We're always starting off with one hand behind our back.

You 'just pay the asking price' lot wouldn't have any money for a Varane bid because you'd have blown £100m on Sancho.

It also shows inept preparation considering the managers pre season. Varane should be embedded into the team well before making a debut but unless things change regarding the hierarchy it will be a last minute transfer.

Madrid’s asking price of €70 million is ridiculous. €50 million plus achievable bonuses of another €5 million more than fair.

People really do think it’s FM and you can just sign players overnight. It’s pathetic.

And then you also have the polar opposite of posters who are incredibly cynical and only contribute with negative views on twitter posts and people’s excitement. It’s a high profile signing that will dramatically improve us so tensions are there, can’t blame them.

Isn't it just that these things are a game of bluff and counter bluff and human judgements and they are impossible to read. Remember when DdG fell through because we faxed the documents too late? Anything really can happen. For what it's worth Ed isn't very good at this stuff.

Despite Varane not wanting to upset his current employer, there's every chance he's set his heart on utd and would refuse to go anywhere else. In that situation, real are forced to accept our offer or lose him on a free.

AS reports RM want €70M, Utd €40M + bonusses.

We're not haggling over 5M, and even if it was, I'm sure those complaining about the haggling are the same ones that lament the Utd tax.

Exactly, and while I really do believe we have improved since then, these things still live in the back of peoples’ minds. A bit unnecessary to yell at them for being legitimately anxious.

If the club are happy for the negotiations to keep dragging on in order to make Real panic and accept a fee more closer to our valuation then I fecking hope it doesn’t delay us in pursuing our other targets i.e. a defensive midfielder.

I know we're talking in the 50-60m range, but if we paid 80m for Maguire, anything less than that is worth it in my opinion. We're talking about a 28 year old elite defender who has won everything in football.

I like the cut of your jib. You should be our negotiator… walk into Madrid’s offices in spats and a monocle, sit down (sideways on, don’t even look at them) and say exactly that
I think Madrid are bluffing they don't want to lose Varane on free and this deal is more likely to be done on United's terms rather than Madrid's.

There was a tweet earlier in the day saying United and Real had agreed to a deal in principle. A few hours later and we're suddenly £30 million apart.

How does that happen?
