The difference is that Madrid aren't saying he'll stay and they're widely reported to be wanting to sell. We also showed with Sancho that we're willing to wait a year. Whether we'd do that with Varane, I'm not sure.
Surely if they're wanting to push ahead with Mbappe this summer, they'll need to make space/get funds in. In this sense, I can see the reason why we think they'll cave.
Conversely, it would be good to have him in and integrated asap, especially as the new season is only a few weeks away. Even if we do end up paying closer to 50m, we're still getting him at a decent price/it sets a good precedent for any Pogba move.

Varane has some flaws, but he is one of the fastest CBs out there.

I dont think they can afford him. United would demand 10-20 millions on top, then you have agent fees and Pogba will demand 400-500k a week.

I thought "bid rejected" happens only when you bid for PR. Normally I'd say there is an agreement between the clubs BEFORE the deal is submitted.
