Going by his own autobiography he did have his struggles at United, possibly even depression. He certainly didn’t come straight in and be appreciated by fans straight away that’s for sure.
I think he said he hit depression after Rome '09 for over a year...

He's one of our most underappreciated players in the last 40 years imo

Carrick fitted in seamlessly in his first season, made a midfield spot his own and improved our first team. He didnt 'struggle'.

Rice would come in and improve the first team immediately not just technically but personality wise as well, he is a leader. The more leaders the better imo.
Carrick actually did struggle in his first season at OT. I was at another forum at the time and had to defend him, pretty heatedly, from the accusation that he wasn't cut out for United.

That said, it was clear as day to me that Carrick was made of greatness and that he just needed a few months of bedding in. It didn't him long to prove me right. I'm not right as often as I'd like, but I was right about Carrick. If anything, I underestimated how outstanding he would be for us.

I just don't see anything close to approaching Carrick's quality in Rice. But if we could get him for 40m to fill the hole at CDM, I'd do it in a heartbeat. But he's not worth anything close to 100m.

true. Its why I find the fascination with Rice strange
What I find most odd is that there's this expectation from his advocates, that he will just continue to improve all facets of his creative play exponentially, when he joins a far better team and in a high pressure environment. It's just extremely unlikely, he'll stick to what he's good at.

Forget first season, even in 2010 or 2011 there were many ManUtd fans who thought he was shit. I was in other forum where there were ManUtd fans who argued Alex Song and Fellaini were better CMs than Carrick.

It’s obviously a time to include Martial in a deal for Rice now, with Ronaldo signed.

Let’s say, Martial + Lingard for Rice - it’s not a bad deal for WHU

Would be a good deal for United, offloading their combined wages. But I suspect Martial would break WH's pay structure so it may be a difficult deal to make.

On loan with us paying some of his wages I assume? Maybe throw in Dan James too(to keep).

Why would Martial agree to that deal though?

It's bemusing how people think Martial will accept being a make weight to a lesser club, or going to a lesser club at all.

Trying to break into the World Cup squad would be one of the reasons I could see him leaving; playing time and being the main man somewhere, another, but surely dropping clubs by too much of a distance is out of the question, I would think.

Lingard + 40m

Rice will put pressure on.

Doubt we are making anymore signings though.

Well, he will now struggle to get on the bench even, especially when Cavani and Rashford are back.
He's getting paid 250k a week. He is going nowhere honestly.

We were fools for giving him those wages.

Everybody likes to play for a top club but it would stupid to spend your prime years by sitting on the bench. Especially when Martial is not any "Phil Jones case" with backtobacktoback injuries. He is only 25yo and still potential 15+ league goals scorer. It would be good for himself to try to find another club. Im sure many EPL clubs would take him. Many Ligue 1 and Serie A clubs also. Problem are his wages. Difficult to sell.

Deepthroating information to Howard Nurse.

Make it 50m, throw in Matic too who only has a year on his deal left so may be open to it. Sell James to Leeds/Brighton/Leicester - net spend all in of around 150m and one of the best squads in Europe. Cavani and Martial out next year - get Haaland in and after 10 years of dawdling we’re back…

this season clubs are allowed to have 9 subs, instead of 7, so even with a 100% healthy squad, he'll still have a spot in the bench

I think he knows now that there is little to no chance of him getting playing time in this team. If he legit wants a chance to get into the France squad, he might have to consider it. But who know, maybe he isn't arsed at all.

Let’s see potential bench:
Henderson
Telles
Lindelof
[New RB or Bissaka or Dalot]
Cavani
Greenwood
Rashford
1 of McFred or Matic
VDB or Lingard

Where is the place for Martial on this bench? Too many forwards already there. And there is also a possibility that we buy a new DCM/CM as well.

We also have James, Mata, Bailly, Amad, Mejbri, Elanga, Shoretire all of whom may occasionally be on this bench…

P.S.: the above is under assumption that we play Pogba-Ronaldo-Sancho with Bruno as AM.

Martial is clearly ahead of Lingard & VdB and you know that.

How about Lingard, James + 25m for Rice? I don't think we have many cash to spend. But I think we now need a strong def minded DM to play alongside with Pogba and Bruno in midfield 3.

Bissouma looks like a better player than Rice for less money.

Perfect blueprint for next 5/6 years

------------------------------------------Ronaldo/Cavani----------------------------------

----Rashford/Amad---------------Bruno/DVB----------------------Sancho/Greenwood------

---------------------------------Pogba/Fred----------------CDM/McTominay---------------------------

--------Shaw/Telles----------Maguire/Lindelof-----Varane/Baily------------AWB/Dalot----------

----------------------------------------------DDG/Henderson-------------------------------------------------

We can sell Martial(40)+Jesse(20)+James(15) and release Mata/Matic/Jones,
Next year buy Haaland to replace Cavani + we will have players like Pellestri+Hannibal/Elanga/Shoretire/Garner as backup options

In fairness, Carrick has never done anything remotely as good as this in football.

Let Maguire and Varane do the passing from deep as our ball playing defenders.

Let Rice give us a balanced defensive ability so we can see Pogba and Bruno playing more in their partnerships which has been great to watch.

Let Rice be the Busquets
Let Pogba be the Xavi a bit further up
Let Bruno be the iniesta playing the furthest forward.

Aye he’d really improve this team , surely with Lingard you’ve got a bargaining chip to offer,

60m + Lingard & James ?

He's like the midfield version of Maguire. Very good, exactly what we need, but we'd need to seriously overpay to get him.
