Music? Football? Tv? Movies? Video games?
Is there anything that comes close to around the year 2000?
I’m not giving an answer btw. Just wondering.

High end TV shows being churned out weekly. Something like Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones (minus the writing) was unthinkable in 2001.

Porn for sure. You can literally find a porn category for anything you can think of these days

The quality of TV shows is better I feel. Sure there's a whole lot more garbage too, but the good ones are really good.

Music will never be the same as 60s and 70s rock for me. But then again, my friends think I'm weird that way cause I listen to music from 35 years before I existed.

Definitely not music or football.

Games is a hard one because the ps2 is the best console ever but its hard to deny how impressive modern games are i just don't find as much joy in gaming compared to as a kid (but i guess that's true about football and music too to an extent)

TV is generally better in that the best talent is now involved in making shows whereas 20 years ago there was still a much more defined split between film and TV. Music has been going downhill fast for about 30 years now, with so much media demanding peoples attention nowadays it has been relegated to background noise and I just don't think people are as passionate about it as they were in the pre digital age. Couldn't comment on video games as I never played them but my 15 year old could take you all on at FIFA or so he tells me.

Im not being funny but to talk about high quality shows now you’ve listed one show that hasn’t been good for five years and one that ended eight years ago. 20 years ago The Sopranos was in full flow and the Wire was about to start.

Video games for certain. TV too I think across the board is better quality.

Football, not for me, I don't miss leg breaking tackles but I think late 90s was a better balance, its too soft now.

Movies? Maybe not. Aside from a certain company not many studios are risking big budget blockbusters. You do get some great indie movies now though with technology more readily available

TV for me is the one with the most notable dip in quality (apart from football obviously). The Wire/Sopranos/Arrested Development/Band of Brothers are worse than what tv shows now?

Plenty that didn't exist in 2000 started a few years later.

Podcasts, Twitch/Justin.tv game streaming.

Esports has made massive strides as entertainment compared to what it was in 2000.

To echo what most are saying, television definitely. I don't think it's ever been better. It's welcome too because cinema is circling the drain.

What are the best tv shows of the last three years? Genuinely, I don’t know. I need to try Succession but I’m not sure of what else is up there with the best.

It's over saturated with shit though. 95% is dross. It's only because there is so much made it seems half decent.

I feel back when you only had 4 channels, there were more "quality" shows percentage wise than there is now.

HBO probably accounts for about 50% of the decent TV shows these days.

I been wondering recently if youtube has ruined Music a little bit.

Before Music used to be harder to make. Had to buy albums and charts etc.

Now everything is streamed.

The Music I listen to is pretty much dead.

Series and shows. Even at youtube you find a generally better content.
Videogames: even for retrogeming emulators do a much better job than physical consoles or old systems, either graphically and performance.

Football (and sports overall): nowaday footballers are faster, stronger and tactically more prepared. Not to meniton taht now you don't need to break someone's leg to get a yellow card.

This is the most nostalgic thread on the caf.
I enjoy my life a lot more now - and feel that having access to a lot of great shows is worth it.

BUT - I genuinely can’t describe how crazy it is how much I find television and music lacking to 20 years ago.

Football is better quality but the money has ruined the game. I feel a similar thing happened with films.

Chernobyl, Mindhunter, Euphoria, Fleabag, I May Destroy You, Watchmen, Ted Lasso, Mare of Easttown just to name a few. Start with Chernobyl, it's a masterpiece. And of course you should check out Better Call Saul if you haven't yet for some reason.

Mare of Easttown, Euphoria, Gomorrah, Nirvana in Fire, Watchmen, The Morning Show, The Bad Kids, Dark

The Bureau probably deserves a mention here too but I've only watched the first episode so far.

TV is ruled out.
If TV is out then none of it.

Today's music is utter crap.

Hollywood would rather do remakes than create new content. When they do create something "new" it's just a film adaptation of a shit comic book.

Video games are heavily online now, which is a den of idiotic mouth breathing children. This detracts immensely from the visual quality of modern games.

Football has seen the moneyed clubs move to cement their positions and surprise winners or finalists, especially in cup competitions, are becoming more and more rare.

There’s plenty of great music around these days depending on what you’re into, but I’d definitely not be able to say it’s better than 20 years ago.

Agree on everything else, especially movies.

Done Mare/Ted Lasso and thought they were… okay.

Watchmen and Chernobyl are two phenomenal mini series. Watchmen might be my favourite series of anything since season 1 of True Detective.

Naw, that's just two shows. If we look at the entire medium, there are far more excellent shows being produced now from around the world than 20 years ago. So even if places 1-2 were (arguably) better in 2002 places 3-20 would mostly be shows from today. In fact, I personally prefer Gomorrah seasons 1-3 to Sopranos (which I tried to rewatch and didn't feel it aged all that well unlike The Wire which is timeless).

I would say concerts have gotten better. The lights the production, holograms, the sound etc. Tomorrowland
Same with movies. The special effects, full surround sound, Imax. It's all more advanced.

Depends on your taste obviously but music around the year 2000 really wasn't all that. It's not like that post-grunge, post-Britpop time period saturated by bad nu metal bands and dance music is usually held in particular esteem critically. I'd take the current music landscape over that wasteland every time.

That led to an indie-revival from 2001 on which gradually improved things but even that came with a glut of landfill indie acts.

Also in terms of hip-hop, I associate the early 00s with the bling-era and 50 Cent, whereas later on it's alt hip-hop and Kanye. And on that scale I'm firmly in the latter camp.

And obviously in terms of access to music now is light-years ahead. Could end up paying as much £20-£23 Irish pounds for an album back in 2000, whereas now I have access to more good music than I could ever physically listen to for half that.

The acceptance that European TV dramas in a language other than English are every bit as good and sometimes far better than the US counterparts. So much so that the American remake them in English but they are often substandard.

In what rexpect? Technologically more advanced, sure, but we are in the entertainment forum. They haven’t got more entertaining. They found some abhorrent ways of extracting more money from the average punter, that’s for sure.

Definitely not music, football or film. It’s miles behind.

Id say fashion is better now. Tv shows too I think. Accessibility to entertainment is a million times better. I go to the gym listening to podcasts or music through my wireless headphones on my smart phone. None of those things other than music even existed 20 years ago. (Well, and gyms)

Videogames is an interesting question. Considering the impact it had, WoW being released after 2000, I would give gaming to 'now'.

Nevermind the rise of esports, as mentioned above.

TV used to be trash. Sure, you had shows like The Wire and Malcolm In the Middle, but the average TV show was pretty bad.

Having said that, I feel that TV is getting a bit oversaturated(?) now. There seems to be a million TV shows that are passable, but very few that are actually good. 'Passable' is better than 'bad', but it's still not worth your time.

I was reading somewhere that streaming has changed music.

Because people can easily skip tracks, producers are reducing song intros and outros so they can catch the ear instantly and because they end abruptly, the whole song is streamed, which is better than only part of the song streamed for rankings.
