In modern football there are different kinds of players featuring on the wing, although most players skillset are not exclusive to one of this categories only, we can distinguish wide players into three categories.
1. Pure wingers: the most natural wide men, they enjoy staying wide and enjoy taking on their fullbacks constantly, they usually possess good pace, bags of tricks and are individualistic in their play regardless of if they play on their natural foot or as inverted wingers they stay wide tormenting their fullbacks by constantly taking them on vertically. Popular examples Leroy Sane, Barca Dembele, Ismailla Sarr, Kingsley Coman.

2.Wide playmakers: They usually combine the skill set of a number 10 and a Winger, they have good vision, passing ability and close control combined with horizontal dribbling skills, they aren't as quick as a pure winger and would sometimes move into the half space instead of hugging the touch. Popular example Hazard, Sancho, Messi, Ziyech.

3.Wide strikers: they play from the wing but their primary focus is getting into goal scoring positions, either by getting on the end of a cross from the opposite flank or making a run behind the opposition defense or striking the ball from the edge of the box, they primarily focus on getting, they are usually quick like the pure wingers but with better finishing and make a lot of outside to inside runs. Popular example C.Ronaldo (Madrid version) M. Salah, Rashford.

So among this three categories of wingers which do you fancy watching the most.

A wide playmaker who can also contribute with a good goal-return. Main focus is on creativity, ball progression etc. but can still bag quality G/A numbers. The Neymar's and Sancho's of the world.

Sancho has 4 goals in all comps, only two in the Premier and no assists.

It doesn't have to be based on numbers today only - Sancho's current output is an outlier. He was comfortably laying on 20 goals a season to his Dortmund teammates...

Wide strikers. They’re my favourite with wingers being dead last

It seems Bundesliga has not translated well to the Premier league lately. Look at Werner's output there.

That means you enjoy watching United over recent years then cause we have had a couple of them....the main issue with wide strikers generally is selfishness.

Always prefer Ronaldo type of wing forward during his peak, he is all action, high-scoring, direct, tricky, pacy, electrifying and exciting to watch. In fact, he did revolutionize such role into his own, and is now role model for some of the best young footballer in the game (ie Mbappe, Rashford)

Messi is more like Ronaldinho type of wing forward, superior in both playmaking and dribbling, at the same time highly productive too. But just that Messi is far more better in execution, far more consistent, and far more unplayable. His talent and execution is totally out of this world which makes him far exceed the level of any of his predecessors.

Neymar or Hazard is somewhere in between. More of a dribbling type, maybe not nearly as productive as the former, but does get involve alot in the attacking play, and exciting to watch for the eye.

The traditional winger or wing forward type with a more supportive role (Robben, Ribery, Sane etc) isn't as dominating for my liking, but they could be very useful for their team.

Werner is in season 2 to be fair
His first season is much like Sancho's, except he had a couple assists. We will have to see if Sancho develops.
50 goals and 64 assists in 137 appearances for Dortmund.
How many did Werner have in Bundesliga? We will see if Sancho develops but to put his name next to Neymar as an example of a great winger?

06-09 Ronaldo was the perfect blend for me. Obviously he became an even bigger phenomenon, stupidly successful and stupidly productive...but felt like he got bums off seats more at that stage.

Hard pushed by Bayern Robben - when he went there he just seemed to become unplayable.

As a kid I spent my time trying to copy Beckham's crossing and free kick technique. Special mention.

If I was a kid now, I think I'd be big on Raphinha. If he moves to a bigger club with more spotlight, I reckon he'll have another level or two to hit.

I think the Neymar Sancho stuff was silly but I equally don’t agree with the comparison with Werner.

Werner has over 2000 more PL minutes on the pitch than Sancho and is playing in a better team. As a centre forward at over 400 minutes a goal he’s been pretty shocking.

Sancho is only 21 and has been eased in to his first season somewhat in a pretty unsettling environment. He’s also played significantly less.

Since 2006 (I’m assuming that’s how far back Squawka’s stats go on the matter), Jadon Sancho became the 5th player ever to get 15+ goals and 15+ assists in a domestic league. (Others are Messi; Suarez; Ronaldo; Hazard). He did this at the age of 20.

Talk about Bundesliga tax and Werner all you want. The comparison just isn’t there.

My only comparison of the two was that Bundesliga success has not meant PL success lately. I do agree that we will see if Sancho develops. Werner has been shocking.

The comparison of Sancho being an elite winger to Neymar isn't there.

He was no where near my favourite but I loved Arshavin after the Euros and when he moved to Arsenal.

Was a personal like I had to the guy.

I also really like Steven Berghuis. He's like Robben, but with less pace and a bit more technique.

Obviously Robben was a million times better but still. He's also a bit of a mad cnut, which I appreciate.

Wide strikers bore me. Cut in and shoot spammers. Can't argue with how effective the role has been in the modern game but it lacks some of the artistry and selflessness that I appreicate in older style wingers.
