Not sure he is right type of player for possession football, but if City, a highly possession football team, wants Haaland, I don't see why we don't want to go for Nunez too.

But I personally think Nkunku would suit out team more, as he could cover a number of position and is far more versatile (FW, LW, RW, AM).

Think he will do the Haller role with us. Not a great in build up but a huge physical presence in the box and finish the chances created by other players.

Looking at the league and champions league combined, he's returned 32 goals from something like 19.13 xG. That simply isn't going to continue as it's a massive overperformance. If we bought him what we'd actually get is returns more in line with his underlying stats.

So for me you assess this transfer by imagining he had returned a more sustainable 20 or 21 goals for Benfica over that period instead. Would we still be interested in him in those circumstances?

Given other options, it may well be that we still would be as those are still decent returns. But at least you're then viewing his price tag and his overall game through more realistic expectations in terms of his goalscoring ability.

Is he a huge physical presence? He's quite poor in the air and more of a Suarez type than a target man, I believe. He seems to work pretty hard off the ball, so Ten Hag might appreciate him for his pressing as well as his finishing.

Think it was @antohan that said he's like Cavani if he had no finishing ability. I wonder if he's just the next Andrea Belotti going through a bit of a purple patch.
Cavani without the killer instinct. Workrate? Yes. Movement? Yes. Finishing? Could well be same level.

It's the killer instinct which drives his movement into regular goalscoring opportunities which I think is miles away from peak Cavani level.

I just don’t see us spending big on a striker as Ronaldo will still be our #9 next year

You think Ronaldo wants to stay without challenging the league?
I think Ronaldo knows he’s at his best at 1 game a week and he can potentially win the golden boot next year doing so. He’s still unreal with proper rest.

Also don’t see another team moving for him that would pay his wages/interest him. Madrid rumors are stupid imo.

No idea. Was just assuming. I haven't seen this guy at all. When everyone said he isn't great in building up the play, I thought he could be our Haller.

Ronaldo won't want to play in the EL so Darwin will be allowed to start those games:smirk::lol:

He's not coming to us to just play in the Europa League and maybe one in every 6/7 PL games when Ronaldo needs a rest. He will go somewhere where he's the main man.

Arsenal if they get CL footy I reckon.

70m for a non technical player with only one real year of goalscoring success scares the shit out of me. Feels like we’d be getting fleeced.
Alternatively he could be a star for the rest of his career. Sometimes it's just obvious with a striker and he just has it.

Even if he isn't scoring goals his level of work rate and selfishness makes up for a lot.

The only doubt can be around his control/passing but i'm sure if ETH think he's good enough and can work with him, i'd be happy.

I suspect we will ease him into the side anyway, while phasing Ronaldo out slowly.

Ronaldo isn’t interested winning the golden boot over major trophy. I’m sure he will send message to the club, challenging the league or good bye. Unless if ETH says ‘’we will challenge the league’’ then I believe he will stay.

I agree. There's no way Ronaldo is going to accept sitting on the bench and the money could be spent on a quality starter in nearly any other position instead.

You keep saying he'll leave yet I'm here saying he's not full of options anywhere else.

Have you watched him much? (genuinely asking because I haven't besides the UCL)

My point is I'd love to have him for 40m, but dropping a Lukaku sized fee on a player that sounds like a version of Lukaku that presses more still worries me a bit. Mainly because our squad isn't like City's currently where you can just surround him with a bunch of technical magicians so all he has to do is run and shoot. We need more forwards with technical class besides Sancho and Ronaldo. Maybe we buy him and then grab another winger to make up for it and go from there.

I think Nunez is more a Filippo Inzaghi than Lukaku. Lukaku is not just poor in his technical ability but also has shit movement.

I can’t see us getting this guy in the summer. He’ll have loads of offers on the table by teams who can offer him CL. The only way he joins us is if we’re the only ones willing to pay them what they want and pay him ridiculous wages.

I can't say I've watched every Benfica game, but I've watched a few since he was linked to us that was available in English tv.

IMO his 'poor technique' is massively over talked. He has lapses of concentration when passing a bit like Bruno, but his technique in terms of killing the ball is absolutely fine. Comparing him to Lukaku isn't really a thing, he is way more comfortable running with the ball at his feet where as Lukaku looks like he will fall over it.

You only have to look at the goals he scores, a solid first touch followed by a quick hard shot.

For me what sold it was the Liverpool match. He gave them way more of a harder time than any of our players did. His pace and running was a threat all game, and his finishing was outstanding. Unlucky to be offside twice but the fact he is there in the right place is a big positive for me.

Only Barcelona are proper competition if they decide to throw their hat in, maybe Chelsea if they rid of Lukaku. Arsenal, Spurs, Bvb I don't see it.

Haller is better at holding up the ball and link-up than Nunez I'd say.

Sometimes i dont understand CAF at all, one day they mocked players like McTomminay due to his technical's deficiency then the next day they want to add another technical's deficient player to this club? Can you imagine the Ronaldo-Nunez's partnership flourish? i dont. If this Nunez kid struggles technically in the Portugese League what chance do you think he can do it in PL where everything is faster and harder? Just Imagine this: How long do you think it will take for him from receiving to passing the ball before the oppo players closing him down? Hard Work should be a given requisite, not something you actively looking for from a player, like you buying a new car, the car should be able to move that's a given the other requirements came afterward. Benfica are notorious for selling players above their true values: Renato Sanches, Victor Lindelof, Joao Felix, and Ruben Diaz (yes i put that City's Diaz who looked so average in EURO without top DMs and FBs shielding him) so I would be extremely cautious before signing any more players from them.
Get a new striker who can work together with Ronaldo, you know the likes of Rooney and Benzema, players with superb technical ability while never shy away working their socks off.

@haru krentz How is he struggling in the portuguese league, he's the top scorer

Stop parroting things that you hear, instead make your mind up for yourself.

funny cause i especially mentioned "he struggles technically" clearly indicating the specific part i want to discuss in my post not only his goal's record which if you bother to check this season is his first and only season where he broke 20 goals barrier. how many Portugese League's Top Scorers went on to have decent career in PL anyway??

He doesn't struggle technically though. What part of his technique is poor?

He's 22 years old. Strikers rarely score 20 goals between 18-22 unless world class.

Another game, another goal. Plenty of good link up in this one, no signs of 'poor technique' :houllier:

Why are you posting that smiley like hes not known to be inconsistent without generally buildup play? Do you watch Benfica regularly?

Well it seems to be something that somebody said and now everybody copies as a truth. Every time I see him I don't see bad hold up play or sloppy technique.

Maybe in previous seasons? perhaps he's improved like all players will at a certain age? it's just a bit tiresome to read.

I bet people on redcafe would turn their noses up to Andy Cole if he was playing now too

Enough to know his technique is not poor where it matters.

No idea why some have decided being a playmaker as a striker is more important than banging in goals.

Great goal scorer but I dont think he's what we need.

We need modern strikers than can drop deep and assist in the buildup as well not old school number 9s.
