No soft spot here. He’s a serious weak link in the defence. Get shot of him.
timber might be smaller but he’s aggressive not passive and his ball carrying Is excellent. I knew Lindelof wouldnt make it at this standard from day one, how it’s taking so long for others to come to that conclusion I wouldn’t know. It’s like a mass hysteria
People are so harsh about the players we have and so optimistic about the players we don’t.

Lindelof is a very intelligent defender of space and has very good long passing. He definitely has physical limitations but he’s easily good enough to be our third choice centre back. Seems professional, has improved since he arrived, doesn’t ruffle feathers or make undermining comments on Instagram when he doesn’t get picked. I’d be happy if all our players had his attitude and think he’s absolutely fine for the role he’s supposed to have.

Good angle to measure it. He’s about the same as Tadic, would say a cm below, so it’s 180cm. Doesn’t matter, good enough imo so get it done.

I don’t know what’s the measurement of being intelligent but from watching Blind at united, I must say Blind is far more intelligent defender of space and far better with his passings than Lindelof, despite of both have similar weakness. I’m still questioning why Mourinho or the scouts actually sold the better player just to replace him with the worse version. Basically, the aspect that Lindelof is good at is not top level in comparison to the top ones.

Yea but we can’t see whether he’s wearing heels or not in that pic.

Has anyone mentioned his height yet? Not sure I'd feel confident with us having a 5ft3 player in CB.

I don't get it, if we want him to be taller surely we just make him stand on a box?

Or wear those stealth heeled shoes short men wear to add a couple of inches to their height. Or just grow his hair out vertically. The possibilities are endless.

Yep it's mostly misplaced passes but a couple of concerning defensive issues where he was basically shrugged off by a stronger striker (One against Haaland, and a couple in the dutch league).

The PL has an abundance of those, so I think that's a concern.
I haven't watched him much, so no idea how good or bad he is. I remember watching him in CL game vs Dortmund, he kept Haaland quiet. I didn't notice him much in that game btw, post match I started reading reports raving about him.

And I suggest that he’s one of the players Ralf had a moan about when he said some players need to show more physicality.
Tell me, what space is he defending when we’ve conceded so many goals this year and many of the opposition are running into spaces in the box?
The only thing Lindelof defends is his hair being nice.

Would agree but Blind is probably the best passing centre back in the world. My argument is that Lindelof is fine for what he is (3rd CB) which isn’t the case for our entire squad bar 5/6 players.

We need first team starters in midfield (2), striker, right wing, right back before we should be splurging on back up centre backs. We need to address first team concerns before we spend a lot of money on a centre back who we ‘think’ will be good enough to start for United at right back. Can’t have another write off season where we fail to address our needs over our wants.

How many best? Pau Torres, Blind, Timber, VVD, Laporte, Matip, Dias, Stones, Bonucci, and etc. If that many then Lindelof doesn't have assets for the benefit of top club. If he has the same weakness as Blind, the least thing he should offer is his ball playing ability should be as good as Blind.

CB cover is as important as anywhere else.
first of all 2 of the 3 first picks are shambolic and the 3rd is made of glass.
secondly all 3 of those were prone to periods out with injuries.
Thirdly, Bailly and Jones want out

who do you (and anyone else that thinks we don’t need a CB) think we should play?

matic is gone too. Do you want to see McTominay as CB?

precisely
on top of that, I think it shows great mental strength from him, too.

Most CBs would opt to keep things simple after a mistake but Timber trusts himself to still feint and turn under pressure and dribble despite a mistake here and there. He's not just playing that style to a good standard in the Dutch league either. Away to Dortmund, which is a tough place to go to on the best of days, he showcased his ability to turn under pressure there which was so impressive.

Haaland had 3 great chances to score tbh.

Daniel Passarella - 5 Ft 8, Fabio Cannavaro - 5ft 9, Franco Baresi - 5ft 9, Carlos Puyol 5ft 10. And these during a time when the majority of sides played with a dominant number 9. You get the point.

I really don't understand this. Short players don't have a monopoly on pace and ability on the ball. You can have both aerial prowess and other qualities. Other elite teams have centre backs with both. It's not one or the other, you don't have to compromise, you only have to compromise if you choose to compromise by buying centre backs with major weaknesses.

Let's ask this. How many premier league sides consistently start with a 5'10 centre back? In a back 4? Why not? Why don't they just all start short centre backs and stop the crosses instead? Because you can't control everything in football, your centre backs are going to be forced to win aerial duels through long balls, crosses and set pieces, it's unavoidable. That's why managers play tall players at centre back.
Gradient of their abilities also holds true the other way, no? A player can be both more aerially dominant, and faster, and better on the ball than the shorter player. In which case the shorter player has no advantages.

Is this guy significantly better on the ball than Liverpool's centre backs, such that their overall team would be stronger if he started for them? That they'd be willing to sacrifice the physical and aerial dominance of VVD, Konate and Matip in favour of having a player marginally better on the ball?

Is it not possible there's a very good reason that we're struggling to name 1 premier league team that consistently starts a 5'10 centre back? Are all the managers in the premier league complete footballing dinosaurs stuck in the 90s? Even Klopp?
if that is blatantly the case than the obvious choice is you take the bigger guy HOWEVER 99% of the time the flip is the case......you have a guy say like Timber who might be a bit smaller but quicker, better on the ball and still with a decent leap but he'll get overlooked by a gaffer who wants a 6'3 mountain man simply b/c he can win head balls yet is poor on the ball and gets shown up for pace

just my personal preference....i want a guy at the back, no matter the height, that can be good with the ball along with pace and can read the game.

If Ajax want 35m for him, you would be foolish to not do the deal.

Yeah if we want to be more attacking, we need players who are confident to try these things and a manager who will encourage him to do so and allow him to develop - making mistakes along the way. I believe if we got him, we'd have both - player and manager.

Could he play CDM? He can sure carry the ball and accelerate past players. Good close control as well.

Again, you're assuming the tall centre back is slow and poor on the ball for no reason.

Still no one has answered why we don't have Premier league teams consistently starting 5'10 centre backs. If managers shared your view "no matter the height" then we'd see loads of them. Is it outlandish to say maybe it's because aerial ability is seen as a basic requirement for the position? And there's nothing in Timber’s stats that suggest he's good in aerial duels compared to centre backs in his league, in fact quite the opposite.

Lindelof is a perfect example of a CB who plays the position but doesn't understand HOW to defend the position. His positional awareness is SHOCKING at this level, his lack of physicality is sad for a guy his size and his decision making on the ball is appalling at times considering he's shown the ability to be decent with the ball at his feet.

Hell with worrying so much about the full backs....we need to fix the spine of the team with 1 or 2 starting CM's and one quality CB to play alongside Varane.

Then you focus on bringing in a left footed attacking player who can play on either wing. You bring in 3-4 guys who are first XI players and then we look at the depth of the squad and how the young lads can help us.

no i clearly stated that if the tall center back is equal to the smaller CB in terms of the other qualities it is a no brainer to take him simply b/c he has the added bonus of height. That's what made Rio such a classy defender but he had all those attributes(size, pace, ability on the ball)

We all love United
Has his lack of height issues been mentioned yet? Having said that, him and Lindelof as centrebacks away to Burnley or West Ham scares me a little though if Varane/Maguire isn’t available for some reason

He quite possibly could perform like that in the Dutch league.
Never performed like that in Portugal so I doubt it, just hasn't got it in him.

Too busy wrapping his arms behind his back like he's doing a sleight of hand trick.

Plus he was in Benfica's B team until he was a year or two older than what Timber is now!
