Options if we don’t buy a true DM (neither Fred nor McT are true DMs, they are box-to-box CMs):

1. Play a 4-3-3 with McT and Fred ahead of Frenkie, winning the ball, pressing, making late runs into the box, etc. FDJ is the distributor. I kind of like this, but Bruno either plays as a winger or is left out.

2. Play a midfield diamond with Frenkie at the base, McFred on either side and Bruno at the top of the diamond. Ronaldo paired with Sancho/Rashford up top.

I don’t think Ten Hag’s long term plan is to convert either Fred or McT into a DM. We’ve tried for years, but it hasn’t happened. If we don’t get a DM this summer, I expect ETH will try for one after the World Cup in the January window.
We shouldn't be looking for a 'true DM' if we get De Jong - with Frenkie in midfield, a box to box CM is much more desirable. Positionally, De Jong is a DM, he just isn't a destructive player stylistically.

One answer, Inflation mate :)
Really though, feels like the only perks we get at the moment is as big club is we're still an attractive prospect for mangers.
Every beat of bad news concerning us gets sensationalised by the press. just imagine if we has signed Bissouma!
Players don't really fancy us as big club. Main reason we have a shot at De Jong is ETH.
Whenever we go to buy players we get dumb prices.
We're not the richest kid either. It's more like get treated like the dumbest rich kid.
Hopefully ETH gets what he needs and it all works out but man... it's a test of patience being a United fan these past few years.
They have seen the Tchouameni and Nunez deals and their eyes have lit up. Now the prices being quoted have jumped to fees similar to those deals.

Those two players are a good few years younger, coming off red hot seasons and their clubs weren't in dire need of cash. We shouldn't be paying anywhere near those fees for De Jong and that's coming from someone that really rates and wants him.

Anyway after ranting I still think we will get him for a fairish price of around 75 million euro all in becuase no one else want's to buy him and Barce need the money. They are just trying to pull a fast one.

Really don't know what people see in Tielemans and Neves. Better than what we have now yes, but nowhere near good enough.
Tielemans is a Pogba with 20% more work rate and 80% less skills.
Neves is a good all rounder and a different player to FDJ.

My thoughts exactly. The profile of players we should be targeting is of those who will form part of our title challenging team. So either they are ready now or we strongly believe they will be there in 2 years time. Anything less is pointless in IMO. Even if this means arduous negotiations that limits our number of signings to 3 players in this window. This is still better than buying players to get top 4 then having to upgrade them to get to the next level.
For me, De Jong and Antony fit this profile whereas Neves and Telemann do not, even if they are better than what we currently have.

I'd prefer Eriksen, Tielmans and Neves to wasting our time or overpaying for De Jong.
PL proven FC

Eriksen played in different role and position. Signing FdJ doesn't stop us from signing Eriksen if we want. Tielmans is like same shite different flavor. Sign him and then we spend the next transfer window to upgrade him and look to fix the midfield yet again.

Neves is being rumored at £50mil, so not sure how FdJ is overpriced in comparison?

Eriksen would be just another schneiderlin/schweinsteiger signing

Those 2 signings aren’t even the same for a start. Eriksen is nothing like either also.

That would add some much needed depth, but de jong is miles ahead of them 3 and wolves want a lot more for neves then what Barca want for de jong.

Agree, but he likes to carry the ball forward from his deep position, so need someone with some tactical discipline and awareness next to him that will also get stuck in when needed. I honestly think Rice would be the perfect compliment as he’s so tactically sound and adept at screening the back four, it’ll free up Frenkie to be a playmaker and progress the ball and not have to worry about some of the defensive responsibilities. Obviously won’t be happening this summer, but one can dream.

Fair assessment, other than Neves being slow and that's really not what we need in midfield now.

Nations League nonsense finished. We can wrap this up tomorrow. And drag it out on social media for the next week.

Neves in particular is super overrated on here since he always plays well against us.

Decent player but not worth anywhere near what Wolves would want from a PL club for him.

Even the 50m pushed on here would be much.

Yeah there are thousands of players better than the dross we have in midfield, that shouldn't be the only criteria we look for.

well that's going to be awkward when he has to say that United is the biggest club in the world in his welcome video.

I thought he was now wanting to join us from what we had read. That doesn’t appear to be accurate after comments like that.

Really dont understand why our fans want this transfer to happen.

We have a restricted budget and spending 80 million on FDJ would take a massive chunk out of it.

We still need to buy players for other positions and need to spend our money wisely.

Spending 50-55 million on Neves (PL proven quality) would be so much better.

We’ve lost Pogba and Mata as well as have a midfield that’s almost mid table level. Eriksen would be a much needed addition to the squad.
