They're taking advantage of those incredibly lax drug laws in Amsterdam I see

I think he’ll join but play DM personally after ten Hag’s comments around Maguire being Captain I could see the following:

De Gea
Dalot Varane Maguire Shaw
Martinez
Bruno FDJ
Sancho —————Rashford
Ronaldo

The thing about Ajax refusing to sell Lisandro Martínez is if they sell him for €50 million, he might end up costing more after the World Cup. Not only that, they know what they have. Lisandro is one of the best defenders Argentina have produced in years, his stock will rise.

On the other hand we don't know how Ajax will perform under Schreuder. If they don't do well his value may well drop. Don't forget Ajax have lost Gravenberg and Mazaroui and Blind is showing signs of wear and tear. Ajax will be challenged next year by PSV, Feyenoord and AZ. It could be a difficult season for Ajax

Jansen is reporting the same about Ajax reluctantly willing to negotiate with United but want 55m to 60m euros.

I thought he doesn't even start for Argentina? Hard to see his price going up due to the World Cup then.

Is he really that good? My god, 60 million. Ajax fans are raving about him.

I’d like to add I’m not at all opposed to the transfer but the fee just seems excessive.

Shame we can never find a way to throw in of ours in part exchange to make up some difference on deals like this. Tuanzebe for example.

But deals rarely happen like that I guess.

Aren't Otamendi and Romero still Argentina's preferred CB pairing?

55-60m for somebody who isn't ahead of a way past his best Otamendi (who was never great to start with) should be a huge red flag.

Love it how Ajax sold Gravenberch for less than 20m to Bayern. Last year of his deal or not...we'd have never got that same deal. It's like European clubs are so jealous of the TV cash in the PL they inflate prices for PL clubs.

I’m not a fan of Martinez at all but I don’t think you can use him being behind Otamendi and Romero in the pecking order against him. International managers are very weird and tend to have their favourites.

Our bid is already high enough. Add few millions on top of it because it is Ajax but back away if Ajax insist on that price.

If he's great as some say, why did we go for Timber first? I'm guessing Timber has a higher ceiling?

But either way, I trust EtH's judgement on players...especially with the one's he's worked with.

He will surely be used as DM, no? Makes no sense otherwise if EtH says we're looking for midfielders and attackers.

Feel like Ajax are thinking… you’ve already stole our manager. If you want any players will cost you double.

Yeah this is what I think as well, haven’t seen much of either but he feels like plan B from how the summer has panned out.

Offer them 70m for both Martinez and Anthony, take it or leave it.
They probably have ready made replacements in the academy or potential cheap transfers on their scouting lists as it is.

More to the point, we've been sniffing around at least three of their players so far this window. From their POV it would probably make a lot of sense for us to come away from this deal thinking that an attempt to sign someone like Antony or anyone else would be very costly and difficult to negotiate.

@FabrizioRomano
: "Ajax wants to keep Lisandro Martínez. They want to protect the new manager who hasn't been at Ajax for many years and make sure he has a very good squad. Also they think that after the World Cup his value could become €70M, €80M, €90M." [1/2]
He doesn’t even start for Argentina.
He’s behind Otamendi & Romero. He has 7 caps in 3 years, and played a grand total of 90 minutes at the Copa America.

But sure, his price is going to rise to 70, 80, 90 million after the World Cup.

See this is why even spending 50mill on bid makes me nervy. Behind Otamendi ffs.

If ETH wanted a DM he could actually try to sign Ajax's DM.

The move for Martinez occurred after our move for Ajax's other CB came to nothing. And it has been constantly reported as an attempt to sign a CB, even before Martinez emerged as the main target, with other CBs like Pau Torres still being cited as alternatives.

Based on what we know there's no reason to think he isn't being signed primarily as a CB, bar some people just wanting a DM more.

Not if he wanted both, he wouldn't. We're thin on personnel and cannot draft in pure specialists when there are so many holes to fill. I doubt it's a coincidence that Timber could also play multiple roles, which makes him doubly useful went unnoticed, either.

And him being primarily a CB doesn't have to mean right now rather than when the manager can pad out the squad as he desires.
