I understand that much of this is genuinely out of the hands of the club, but at what point do we call this a day and bring in another player instead? I think the time might be now. We can’t afford a full season with our current options.

How pissed off do you really need to get before you decide that 17m you’re owned isn’t worth it? Surely De Jong knows exactly what they’re doing, and is only more determined to wait it out?
Footballers have short careers. He could play his next game and get a serious injury. £17m is a lot of money. He is owed that as Barca agreed the contract so the feckers need to pay him or agree a settlement.

I wasn’t saying he should write it off, I agree with you. My point was more along the lines of ‘where does it end?’. I’m not at all surprised he hasn’t been willing to just forget about what he’s owed, I’m more surprised Barcelona think it would be that easy.

Probably asked before but wondered how the confident people in this thread think he finally gets what he's owed by Barca

I'm not sure where it ends to be honest. Barca's actions are an absolute disgrace. Where is LVG in all this? Had we been doing it, I'm sure we would have heard comments in the press. I'm surprised more people generally haven't called them out.

Gaz. Is a Mewling Quim.
What about the constant BS, being played at CB and seemingly unwilling to give him a penny of what he's rightfully owed
A) legally he isn’t rightfully owed it and B) that’s exactly what I would do if I were trying to force him out.

Barcelona don’t hold the cards, they’ll blink before the window and pay a portion of the money and both parties will draw a line under it and he’ll fly to Manchester/Cheshire. There’s absolutely nothing suggesting anything other than that will happen.

Agreed. Even before Pogba and Matic left, we needed a midfielder, so I'm scratching my head as to why we've not signed one in addition to the FdJ pursuit. I know both Eriksen and Martinez can play there but surely we need another proper central midfielder?

In the age where almost every player half decent makes a scene when something doesnt go his way, its funny how Frenkie who is among top CMs in the world lets Barca to insult him like this. CB? with World Cup coming soon? either he's very naive or has a very shitty agent working for him if he would rather wait and beg like an unwanted, disrespected employee for 17m instead if prioritizing his career & development as a footballer (still has at least a decade which renders 17m very small) and 2022 World Cup. Was their own fault to agree to the new contract to begin with. I think yeah he has a shitty agent. Barca pulled your pants down, now move on. CLASS AND DIGNITY.

2 games at CB is quite the insult. If it happens again in their next game in Wednesday, I would expect words to be had. At some point Frenkie himself has to end this farce. Surely a negotiated settlement can be found.

Think when it finally hits home Donny still can't do it with Erik in charge we will go for someone then

It's alright, I'm from the country.
Taken from your article:
The Pall Mall Gazette enlarged on that in 1867: “Tailors could not be expected to earn much money ‘in cucumber season.’ Because when cucumbers are in, the gentry are out of town.” So it is the dull time of year, when orders are few, work is slack and tailors perforce have time to themselves.

We can agree it's not referring to quality alone time.

This thread is so educational.

What in the hell is going on in here then?
People actually saying that they think ten Hag will be sacked by Christmas if de Jong doesn't come? Others saying he's mad for chasing him even though he's very likely had many assurances that he'll come to United if/when the issues at Barca are sorted. Others saying that he's now a CB and we should walk away? Wow it's kinda turned into a shitshow in here hasn't it haha

Keep the faith guys, he's coming. Maybe not this week, but he's coming. If he wasn't we WOULD have walked away, we wouldn't stick around for a player that has no interest in joining us! Wish people would look at this from a rational sense, not through what the media is telling us.

Just wait till they’re back in Barcelona. Laporta will probably get someone to constantly puncture FDJ’s tires so he’s late for training, then fine him 2 weeks wages.

Something that massive would have leaked so safe to say this will keep rumbling on until Sept 1
Not really... i think we've got a couple of weeks left in this before we get a conclusion. Barca will want Silva in asap and they need to get rid of de Jong before that can be done.

It seems to be a pattern. Telles got played at CB too and is apparently dispensable. I guess managers are using CB as a way to tell a player it’s time to move on.

These days it basically means silly season. A time when nothing really happens. In Dutch it is Komkommertijd.

Not a chance I pass up that €17m but mainly due to the principal.
Barca are acting disgracefully ATM, they deserve all things to fall apart on them.

As long as there’s a chance, we wait. Frenkie is vital. The most important cog in the machine that ten Hag is building.

Every hour in training.
"Frenkie! You missed a pass! Two weeks' wages!"
"Frenkie! Did you just give me the finger? Stretching? I won't believe it! Two weeks' wages!"

So we spend ages trying to agree a fee and payment structure with Barca, knowing full well that the issues lie on their side with wages etc, just to say "ah screw it, can't be arsed anymore, lets leave it".

I love how people want to walk away and go for someone like Neves and Tielemans, and when they're absolutely bang average for us they'll complain and say we should have waited for de Jong... especially if he goes elsewhere and tears it up

I believe 5 league games will be played by the time the window closes. That's too much we can't wait until the last day of the window for him. We have to hit the ground running.

I’m sure he is; our midfielders are shite. But as I’ve asked above, when do you draw the line and move elsewhere?

When it's clear that the player doesn't want to come or Barca pull the plug on the agreement.
ten Hag will know exactly whats going on and how long he needs to stick around for. He's confident the player will come, as am i. If anything was to change, united would brief and we'd move on

Yeah, cos the classy and dignified thing would be to moan to the press, refuse to play (meaning he gets fined), and go golfing until he's sold.

Nobody has fecked him over unless he bends into Barca's demands. Seems to me he's rightly refusing to let that happen and is standing his ground and forcing Barca's hand. They aren't in a position to take a hard line stance and let him stay for some moral victory. They probably can't even afford to keep his wages on the books, let alone miss out on a hefty transfer fee. He will win, players always win. Having a loud mouth agent doesn't mean having a decent agent, it just means gimps on the internet think they're some kind of bad ass cos they talk smack. Class, yo.

Yup it’s gone to hell in a handcart in here, the place has flooded with noobs and doomers. I think it could well be this week - wasn’t a La liga deadline of some sort reported for the 30th? We could see movement soon, especially off the back of Xavis statement.
As for people being rational in here, by and large you’ve got two hopes; no hope or Bob Hope variety.
