A lot of posts in this thread about this deal being "on" have been based around inferences and chaining together information so I'm just going to put this out there.

Last week there was a Utd brief that alternatives are being kept warm. Over the last few days there's been suggestions that De Jong would prefer London and CL, and the last couple of days Chelsea's name has started to come into it. Yesterday Neves' name came into picture.

So is it possible to infer from that, that Chelsea started, getting involved last week, Utd starting getting bad feedback and are floating alternatives because this went south quickly?

Just to be clear, I'm not stating that is the case, because I'm not certain of anything. But it seems plausible.

Well there you have it. Confirmation of what any sane person had figured out weeks ago.
He was never going to sign for us.

Maybe Barca need to offload De Jong in order to sign Azpilicueta and Alonso from Chelsea, so they called in a little favour for Chelsea to leak a story and push us to pay the deferred wages or convince Frenkie to take less of what he's owed?

We don't hang in there for this long without assurances from the player, surely?

Whatever happens, if we end up buying Ruben fecking Neves then we really are in trouble. Not because he's a terrible player, but because he's not worth what they'll ask for him and he's not a significant upgrade. It's a Wan Bissaka like signing that just shows we're not learning from our mistakes.

I'd rather throw Garner in, honestly.

I was over this deal a week ago mate

I stopped following it for the most part and just checked in now and then.

I’ve already come to terms with potentially Not getting him.
Don’t say that! In it till the bitter end brother

If he joins Chelsea now, it certainly adds credence to the stories that:

1) He never wanted to join United
2) CL football was indeed significant for him

Which makes this entire 14 week pursuit look utterly deranged.

In some ways it might be better not to get this transfer.

Firstly, he really isn't the player fans think he is, so there could be disappointment. Fans seem to think he is pirlo. Same happened to van de beek, who is a second striker who fans just believed would be a champions League level deep lying playmaker. They turned on him when he wasn't.

Secondly, and most importantly, it would take the pressure right off ETH this season. Fans are already saying 7th or 8th would be an acceptable finish. Large signings tend to raise expectations. In reality if the squad is going to finish 7th, FDJ isn't going to push it to fourth.
Such a weird reasoning. Did I end up in a West Ham forum.

The clubs did their role. They actually got a deal in place with Barcelona. ETH failed in convincing him to join him at the club.

He should stick to the training ground

Giving power of transfers and squad building to another manager instead of an experienced DOF, when the same strategy has failed for Moyes, LvG, Mourinho, and Ole. We're failing to get targets that would massively improve the team because they're either not Dutch or not affiliated with Ajax.
And it's worrying that despite the vaunted revamp of upper management, we are doing the exact same thing that failed several years in a row. Hell, even if we somehow managed to get De Jong against all odds, I'd still be worried that all of our transfer targets seem to be players our manager knows personally.

Is it a big deal when the alternatives are not even close to De Jong’s quality?
I think this is a classic case of overrating a transfer target and building him up to stupid levels on here.
He hasn’t exactly shone at Barca. Excuses about Busquets being in his position or the manager not knowing how to use him (to be fair ETH said this) doesn’t disguise the fact he’s been underwhelming for them. It’s just trying to explain it all all away.
Honestly think our side is crying out for a DM, someone who can pass a bit but tidy up behind Eriksen. I was always stumped as to how a de Jong and Eriksen midfield wold work, especially in England.

This guy was never coming to United.

What irks me more is the club spending months chasing him and not lining up any alternatives.

The moment we realized Barca was fecking Frenkie over, we should have withdrawn the offer and looked for alterntives.

We need to be equally as ruthless in the transfer marker as we look to be on the pitch.

Stop. Fecking. Around.

Waiting if he didn’t want to join and let someone else steal him obviously
The hold up has always been the deferred wages. That isn't the fault of United.

If Chelsea decide to pay the wages for Barca, that isn't 'letting' anyone steal him.

United's modus operandi in those situations though is to brief Ducker/Stone etc. that we have pulled our interested due to [insert lame excuse nobody believes]. Ornstein going with Chelsea interest is bad for us, but the fat lady hasn't appeared on stage yet. Also the issue has seemingly never been about agreeing fee with Barcelona.

Remember that idiot who said he’d happily have his account deleted if De Jong didn’t sign? I bet that guy feels pretty stupid.

I’m aware of the situation mate, I didn’t say it was the fault of Barcelona. United have been given false assurances from someone and been strung along.

Fabian Ruiz and Tielemans could be similarly money to FDJ and would add a lot more options as to how we lineup.
Yep that would be a good buy two players who would be an upgrade on the MF that we have now. Question now is will the club move on from FDJ and move quickly or will they still give pursuit for FDJ and have no new MF at end of the transfer window.

Yup.

Makes Murtough and Arnold's little trip to Barcelona look like when Woodward left Moyes' preseason tour for urgent transfer business.

Funnily enough Fabregas, ultimately, ended up at Chelsea.

History doesn't repeat itself but it sure does rhyme...

This place is going to be chaos when United fund Chelsea’s deal for De Jong by buying Kante on deadline day.

All jokes aside, my main concern about us publicly chasing a player who doesn’t want to join is that the asking price for Target B & C will now be a damn lot closer to €80 million.

How does it serve us right if we don't get him then?

I think that might have been me when I was drunk.

Honestly, I'm happy to stick by it; having my account deleted from here if this deal goes tits up would be absolute blessing.

The phrase "confidence a deal can be completed" worries me. To me that indicates a willingness from the players' end.

Serious questions to be asked if they wrap this one up quickly now. Hope it's just another twist in the saga though.

So hard to tell if we are absolute idiots in this saga or if he joins us after all and it was just a waiting game. Guess we find out in the next weeks

I’ve been negative on this deal all summer, probably over negative in all honesty because I thought he’d stay at Barce. It would be a new low if he joins Chelsea after we’ve chased him for 3 months.

Complete embarrassment for the new manager and ‘transfer team’ in their first ever window. We needed a big summer and it’s turned into a mess.
