This was how I took it originally. However with the latest updates tonight I reckon he knew it was starting to fall apart.

Romano now saying we are "desperate" to convince FDJ.

Another summer, another embarrassing transfer saga.
Where?

I have a feeling some might use the dreaded E-word to describe our apparent desperation but perhaps a sliver of hope for those muppets still left on the train.

Makes no sense for him to stick around if it's falling apart. No shame in admitting we can't sort a deal out so we're moving on, more damage in just staying when they fully know he doesn't want to come.

I do wonder if these guys know as much as they're letting on though. They do clearly have sources but it's always the same stories worded slightly differently. The fact that de Jong has been totally radio silence for weeks and weeks now means they have nothing really to go on.
Hard to say isn't it, and tweeting about a United target = a ton of attention so worth sticking your neck out a little (with caveats to cover your own back).

How much of this is guess work and how much is fact? Because as I say the only side leaking stuff at the moment seems to be Barca and they can tell us whatever the hell they want.

Hi agents will also say whatever they can to get him the best deal possible. Not saying this isn't all true but when everything is coming from one side it makes it hard to say what's real and what's not

Things starting to come to a head, if more reports start coming out than just those from Jamesanalrobson (sorry, but I always read it that way) about Ruiz then I think this is dead.

Why don’t you go and plant yourself in another thread if this saga is so embarrassing for you?

Or pick another team that doesn’t work you up as much?

Got a feeling he is quite cucked by his fiance and she would push him for London.

De Jong could come out and say 'feck United, I'm going to Chelsea' and there will still be some here trying to twist the events to suit their wants.

Quite possible, but when he's in a team packed with quality midfielders and he has a bad couple of games, well... Good luck feeling valued then!

None of this makes any sense on our end

Boggles the mind that the approval side of things wouldn't be dealt with before offering north of 80m pounds...

That's more unbelievable than anything especially with someone with personal links to the player at helm for us

To be fair what kind of club offers 80m for a player and isn't desperate to sign him? It should go without saying.

In the end he knows that United is the bigger club and he will play under the manager he played his best football. He will also be the one that dictates our team. So yeah, leaving Barcelona means joining United.

It doesn’t make sense at Chelsea end either given they’ve been making bids all summer without getting the green light from players.

There MO has been bid first, see if the player fancies it later.

Frenkie. Doesn't. Want. To. Leave. That is the main issue here for both Barca and United.

There comes a time you have to accept not everything in the media is coming from the club, why would Barca - who are even more desperate now - jeopardize a fair deal we have in place with United and risk pissing them off by inviting Chelsea to bid? Think about this logically. Frenkie wants to stay clearly but if forced to leave, he probably wants CL football. I don't think he has any affinity to a particular club nor do I believe he gave any assurances. His agent is feeding the media with rumors of CL clubs. First we had Chelsea, yesterday it was that he wanted to play for Bayern. Please tell me why Barca would do that when they just want him gone? Even the deferred wages, I think at this point the club will find an agreement but I still think the player will refuse to leave.

I get everyone hates Barca, wants us to fall etc etc not gonna argue against that I'm here for a discussion but this really is mental gymnastics on another level bordering on conspiracy theory type shit. I don't really believe the Chelsea links are realistic on their end either looking at the positions they need but this is way deeper than just deferred wages delaying the deal at this point.

Laporta will continue the lie about wanting to keep him as he knows, if this goes tits up and he does end up staying, the player and club have to put it behind them and work towards the future. He's a politician.

I think the major reason he and his agents have stayed silent throughout this saga is because he wants to stay; beautiful city, CL football and a shot at winning major trophies whilst earning more on his current wages than he would if he left. If Barca are to force him to leave, he won't make it easy by joining the first club interested.
Not much of that is really known for definite though is it? How about alternatively, Barca have been trying to push him out for weeks, knowing they were in a mess with their wage bill and knowing that there was a chance La Liga wouldn't sign off on all their lever income, and FDJ is happy to leave but only if he gets all of his owed money? You mention 'coming to an agreement' but why would he let you weasel out of any of it? You suppose he wants to stay for the love of the club but I'd argue there is just of much of a chance that he would be happy to leave Barca to their shenanigans if you weren't constantly low-balling him during negotiations. There is nothing out there yet to make your theory any more likely than that one.

If the Chelsea stuff is made up and coming out of Barca, a valid possible explanation could be that you are doing it to coerce United into telling FDJ to write off whatever you are trying to get out of paying and making up the shortfall ourselves. Do you not think Barca would consider that strategy?

All the Chelsea stuff could be true, all the stuff about him not wanting United could be true, but after the circus at Barca during this window and the way this story has run, I don't think it is mental gymnastics or conspiracy theory if someone thinks there is a decent chance that whatever is stopping FDJ from leaving is being caused by Barca's ridiculous financial trickery.

I'm confused, they know that an €80m bid would be accepted so why not bid and just wait it out like United have? If they're certain he wants to come then they'd have no worries about bidding and waiting.

Seems to me like it's an excuse as to why a bid hasn't gone in yet, and if one hasn't gone in within the next week, he'll still throw out they're waiting for a yes. If Chelsea wanted him, they'll bid whenever.
