I agree on the character part, although I have a soft spot for Arnautovic. I hope they don't sign him, but I'm not against Rabiot. He is a player of need who is supposed to he in his prime years, I think ETH can work with him. We got fleeced, but in the end 15-18m is not that bad even though it feels that way right now.
If we've been turned down by De Jong and he comes in, then we get another couple of players for similar smaller fees (Ruiz and Laimer come to mind as examples) then I'll probably say fair enough - there's not another player on the market that's top class so you've still used the money to improve our depth and potentially oust the real dead wood. If he was one of about 3 cm/midfield signings, I don't think it would be so bad. But, he alone is not the answer. We can't just get him, stand back and feel pleased with ourselves that we got one midfielder in. We can maybe make this work, but we need more.

There are plenty of average alternatives within the club to replace McT without having to pay for more average-ness on purpose
