But those are probably quite talented players by the standards of the Dutch league. Trying to pull off the same trick with the same level of player in the pl feels doomed to fail. Also none of those players you listed come across as massive cnuts
Well you're not wrong but they've proved their worth in the Champions League too against some of the best teams in Europe, even Blind who gets the Maguire treatment online on the regular here. I agree on the character part, although I have a soft spot for Arnautovic. I hope they don't sign him, but I'm not against Rabiot. He is a player of need who is supposed to he in his prime years, I think ETH can work with him. We got fleeced, but in the end 15-18m is not that bad even though it feels that way right now.

If we've been turned down by De Jong and he comes in, then we get another couple of players for similar smaller fees (Ruiz and Laimer come to mind as examples) then I'll probably say fair enough - there's not another player on the market that's top class so you've still used the money to improve our depth and potentially oust the real dead wood. If he comes in alone then we are in big trouble. It looks like the big red panic button has been hit but I'll wait until the window slams shut before accurately judging this summer - It could be that we've agreed a few deals and were just waiting for a yes or no from Frenkie and that's why this all looks speedy - he gave us a "no" and we've accelerated the others.

This is unacceptable.
It's a media source suggesting he's an alternative to FDJ, the club has made no such statement.

It's more likely Rabiot is a relatively risk-free punt given the paltry £15 million sum. It will have no effect on any other business we have planned for this transfer window.

Since this has been shared a million times. Do you think that this representative of both players?
I’d say they represent stats you’d expect to judge a midfielder on? Or are we going off feelings about a player?

I hate stats, I judge on how a player plays for my team.

Vernon's stats in Italy vs his stats in England for example imagine the difference.

I've seen enough of Rabiot to say he's better than Mctomminey. He's also a different type of player, Rabiot plays deeper and moves the ball better.
Juventus fans think he is shit and are glad he is going and now he might be coming here, so what being less shit than what we have but still being properly shit is a good thing?

Is this supposed to be a defence of Rabiot? :nervous:

I read that Juve were prepared to pay him off so he could leave on a free.

So why are we paying money?

This club appears to be in freefall at the corporate level.

Or how about the paltry 15m softening FDJ's desire to hold out?

Has it? Not seen it before myself.

"Representative"? What sort of question is that - they are what they are, stats. Not the whole picture, equally, not nothing. But you sound like you have some views on the story they tell, so maybe we could hear them?

Remind me how much we received for Telles, how much we will receive for Bailly, Jones etc.

£15m is not 'paltry', especially for a player they want rid of.

Adrien Rabiot is still a French international playing regularly for national team. He is quality otherwise he won't be pick ahead of other talents in France.

Do you consider that Rabiot is a midfielder that normally averages 83.6% of his passes?

Anything if it means we don’t see mctom again
Even if he moved the needle just a little bit
Might see things different, play different passes, make different runs
Doesn’t matter, what we have now is utter turd

I think I'm going to make a thread on the misuse of statistics on here; the number of times I've seen FBREF profiles provided with absolutely no context to "prove" a point is excruciating.

Nice Haiku attempt but the number of syllables are all wrong!

I already shared them several times. I'm more interested in your opinion since you only shared a picture.

People keep sharing this absolute crap - if people would just use their eyes and brains they would know that there really is no comparison between the two.

Rabiot is a big step up from McTominay I dont care what people say

If he was one of about 3 cm/midfield signings, I don't think it would be so bad. But, he alone is not the answer. We can't just get him, stand back and feel pleased with ourselves that we got one midfielder in. We can maybe make this work, but we need more.

De Jong + Neves + Rabiot would be a highly successful window.

Neves + Rabiot would be an upgrade on what we have.

Rabiot is one additional option in the squad, but it's not enough.

According to the brilliant :) source of Football Manager, his best role is as a Carillero, which is this:

Carrilero
Definition:
A direct translation is “railway man” or “con man” which is quite fitting to the football description of this duty being defined as a midfielder who is a “shuttler”. The job of this individual is to cover the lateral areas of the pitch and link the defense with the midfield. It is a deceptive role as they are a support piece of the midfield and link the lines of the midfield – hence the term “shuttler”.

Think the context of this move is impacting opinion more than the move itself.

If this hadn't come about following FdJ debacle, wasted window, Arnautovic links and shite start to season, I think - assuming this is alongside an FdJ and an attacking option - it definitely improves us.

Having options like him in the squad over the likes of McT and Fred strengthens our bargaining positions in future windows too.

There are plenty of average alternatives within the club to replace McT without having to pay for more average-ness on purpose
