But the reality is we aren't going to attract the top players without CL football (see FDJ) so we have to find a way to make steps to get back to that level. McFred aint going to cut it and I'm guessing ETH has lost his shit in the wake of that Brighton game and we're now trying to do something about it by pulling the FDJ money and finding next level down players to make us better in the short term.

I know very little about this guy other than what has been written on here but if he turns out to be better than McT, which surely he is, then it's a positive step to getting a better midfield and thus a better team. The reality is, if we don't get CL next season we will go backwards even further.

I wouldn't have chosen this guy but at £15million and hopefully on not too big a salary / contract then it's some kind of forward step on the pitch in the short term.

I only hope somehow there is some plan, somewhere for the long term.
apparently 120k a year is pretty reasonable nowadays, so a 48m investment Is considered mid level

tbf you are right, there are no direct dressing room incidents unrelated to football. All of his incidents appear to be related to the fact that he doesn’t like to do defensive duties. For juve and France the blow ups seem to have been when other players have called him out for not getting back to defend, or when he blames others for his mistakes. Pretty sure that’s not his fault though as his mother has repeated the line he doesn’t want to play as a 6
Yeah that's nonsense, there has been no blow up with France and no stories with Juventus either.

Tbh I have no choice but to hope he is as world class as you believe. We are getting him and he is going to be on a major wage for five years, if he isn’t we are fecked anyway. We won’t be able to sell him, and we have to hope he suddenly starts playing like an upgrade of the player he was supposed to be 3 years ago. If he isn’t this team is only going one way and our new manager will pay the price in 18 months. I sincerely hope you are right

He has already said he is not a dm, and if we insist on playing him there his mother will be kicking up a huge stink.

The fee is not the issue, his £120kwages will be, especially when he can’t be moved on
I don't care what he's said, if you're ETH you get on the blower and say we want you, and this is how we see you playing. Expectation set straight away and he can take it or leave it. I think if you do that there's less problem. I think players can change and they can come round to your way of thinking if you're a good and persuasive manager.

All players on 120k are hard to move on unless they work out.

Let’s assume he signs, where does he play? Is he busy enough to be the lone DM and free up Eriksen to be the ball player?

To be honest, as much as this one would be a a panic buy, I'm fecking fed up of McFred so I'll take it. As depressing as that may be, that's the point we've got to.

We are trying everything we can to avoid buying what we need like a CDM it appears.
But FDJ is not a CDM either…it seems we are just looking for someone press resistant who doesn’t play through balls to their strikers with their first touch.

In that case we need a whole new team.

Rabiot has never had any issues defending, he has never been against it or refused to do so.

what do you think he is going to say? Nah I don’t want a big wage and another signing on fee? If he wants he can just say yes EtH and when he turns up he can then say he doesn’t play there. What are you going to do? Surely better to pick him to play in a position you know he wants to play, accepting what his strengths and limitations are, especially if he has been so vocal previously. Why start His career on a bad footing?

There isn't a point where I suggested that he was world class. So don't try to pretend otherwise.

Yes he can do that. But alternatively perhaps he's not out to swindle us, con us, turn up, cause big problems. Why would that be his default setting? There is nothing even in his Juventus history that massively supports it. His mum has a word..so what, ETH is a big boy. I just think you're seeing every negative reading it this way.

My view is managers adjust players roles all the damn time. Its part of what a manager does when onboarding a player. Explain the project, explain his role. If he's not under illusions and you're honest, I think there's a pretty good chance you can get a tune out of him. I could be completely wrong and he'll play box to box anyway, who knows. I don't think ETH plays a traditional DM that sits and does little else, I just think Rabiot is skilled towards the defensive side so we will have to utilise that.

TBF, look at Liverpool, or even City, the 3 cm don’t all have to be world class top quality players. They just have to be good and efficient at their roles, and not be a hindrance to the system; which based on the first half yesterday McTominay clearly is.

Liverpool had Milner and Henderson as Klopps two main CM’s in his first few years , in fact those two still get a fair amount of game time.
I think that says ETH should be able to improve this team with Fred and mctominay in centre mid more than it says anything else

But their front 3 were ridiculously good.

I salute you for continuing to defend Rabiot. I gave up months ago. It just seems set in stone on this forum that he is toxic, doesn’t like to defend, causes rifts in the dressing room etc. Obviously no one can show you any sources for it but that doesn’t seem to matter.

Liverpool in those Klopp early years were a lot more direct and very workman like in midfield.

EtH system requires the midfielders to get on the ball and effect the game

I watched him at PSG and was massively impressed by him at times. I can’t say I’ve thought the same since then though.

Maybe I’m just 20 levels below ETH, but I find it hard to believe Rabiot was on the list.

Perhaps he was. Either way, I don’t see another top 6 team signing him but I do trust in ETH. He might see something we don’t.

Rabiot is a good player. I'd take him here any day. A lot better than any of our options and a solid technical player.

I’m all for this to be honest. He’s a lot better than what we already have in CM bar Eriksen and from the sounds of it he’s seemed to have matured quite a bit.

Bring it on.

Having listened to the Talk of the Devils podcast and reading posts from @JPRouve I'm warming to this transfer.

I was somehow under the impression he was trouble (media). Then again we need characters in the squad. Remember a certain player who played with his collar up and came with a reputation?

Tbf he was playing in a rubbish team.

Luckily he is coming into a well oiled machine now.
This is what i was thinking. Last year Juve just about got top four i think, or at least they started really poorly.

The year before that inter won the title.

Id love to see his stats at PSG and when Juve were winning titles.

Having said that just Rabiot and no other MF signings would be an underwhelming summer.
