I agree, the term smokescreen gets used too freely here ... I mean who exactly are smokescreens for? I highly doubt that daily twitter rumors about United even come on the radar of the boards of other clubs.
Smoke screens are primarily for the media and supporters, say that a club wants to do a high profile deal for a player but there is a real possibility that if wont come of which would lead to a bad mood amongst supporters.. so they leak a story about their interest about some xy player who they even dont wanna sign, or a player that they know they can sign quickly if needed. Then if the big move for the prime target is successful, they can pleasantly surprise supporters. But I highly doubt that other clubs concern themselves with reading random twitter rumors about the moves of their competitors. If there is something significant happening with a player they're interested in.. they get informed by that players agent and not from the media surely.
So, what?
You think they're all honest among themselves, that they don't use smokescreens and decoys in a multimillion dollar business?
"Yeah, hi, sooooo, i'll have the duck orange....
-"Back to business, yeah, listen Laporta, we don't have anyone else on the wish list, it's just Frenkie or bust for us."
-"Ohhhh i see. Ok then."
Come on. Of course they use the newspapers and so call ITK's to put false rumours around.
