Does relegation mean anything with respect to the Euros and WC qualifications?
Yes, it makes it easier to qualify. Winning your group in the Nations league (much easier in B) offers an alternative road to the next qualifiers (in this case the road to WC 2026).

Should probably stop calling up players like Maguire.

Need to see more of players like Ben White, Stones, Geuhi, Tomori etc. Players with technical qualities that can play out from the back

James/TAA/Walker - Geuhi/Gomez/White - Stones/Tomori - Chilwell/Shaw

Midfield could be flexible whether to play a pivot or a 3 with Rice sitting deep.
Maguire performs well for England. Odd to pick him out as a problem really. I’d also question Stones, TAA and Chilwell.

We can blame Southgate all we want, but at some point some of the very, very expensive players in this squad has to make a play in front of goal. No goals from open play in what, 4,5 games?

The players didn't cost anything though?

This argument never works. There's a reason Ole is out of a job. Why have managers if players can organize themselves?

Ahh I thought they were going to the finals. Alas they are just celebrating the Nations League.
Well, they have a quite inexperienced team, and they are still in the run to qualify for the semi-finals. Should they win on Monday and make it to the semi-finals, they'll probably have a much better team by June, and that would give them a shot at winning the trophy.

They would barely have a shot at making it out of a WC group stage in this state. They should actually thank Jorginho for the penalty misses, he spared them more embarrassment.

Yeah he's clueless tactically and this set of potentially talented players need direction from someone else but won't get it due to FA

Southgate has definitely not learnt anything in his tenure.

Yet another limp wristed performance in an overly defensive 5-3-2 formation. To go alongside a whole host of limp wristed performances in overly defensive formations from the recent past.

Keep it tight and hope one of the few genuine attacking players produces something for you is not a tactic that will ever get us very far.

We have the tools to be much more attacking and aggressive yet Southgate keeps that handbrake firmly on. Be brave Gareth you won't get many more chances.

Gigantic waste of space Southgate is, wasting a golden generation under this clueless charlatan. Ole's parallel are so striking that it's not even funny.

Vast majority of non-English supporters have seen him as a problem for few years now, good to see more joining in.

This is a sad take, to be fair: an illustrious penalty taker missing the winning penalty in both games against your direct competitor is enough to make 95% teams crash out at any level in any given short competition. We evened out the smiling luck we had at the Euros and be it, one trophy & one disaster is better than two QFs.

that “performance “‘ should be the final straw but it won’t be.
We’ll limp through the WC group and get spanked by the first decent side we face.
Italy are fecking pony and we were chasing shadows for much of the game today.
The lack of bollocks from our FA is incredibly annoying.
At least he has a good waistcoat right?
I am fecked off at the futility of it all……..

Don’t be deliberately obtuse. You know exactly what I mean. At one point you’d expect this “fantastic” group of players to be able to produce a goal without the manager having to paint it with crayons for them. Yes, the FA can and should do better than Southgate but the players are to blame as well

Unfortunately they have no interest in doing better than Southgate because unbelievably he's seen as the saviour for them

Unless maddison is a lot worse than grealish of the field I don't get why he doesn't get selected. England have struggled to score goals for the past few games. Maddison a creative player who has been on good form is left behind for a bunch of defenders. Brings along Toney doesn't put him in the squad and then benches 2 keepers. There clearly was a problem before this game and Southgate has failed to address it.

What do you mean he's a problem? As a Scot, I hope he stays in the role for at least another decade.

Utter waste of time having this fraud in charge. He's not even got the legend status Ole had to fall back on.

At this point its not the players IMO, England has a history of having great players but shit managers.

Sven, McClaren, Capello, Hodgson, Southgate.

Sven squandered the best XI we've had since 1966, McClaren speaks for himself, Capello just wasn't a good fit, Hodgson is an average manager, Southgate is below average.
Hey, you missed out Allardyce in there! 100% win record with England... can't ask for better than that! ;)

England are just lifeless aren’t they, Southgate’s sell by date is long past due. The cycle of this England side really needs a new manager with a bit of attacking mindset.
Absolutely nailed it perfectly,FA will live to regret letting Chelsea take Potter that's for sure. Next best thing available is definitely Tuchel

Regardless of how poorly we've played overall, you have to say some of the touches and control of Grealish, Foden and Bellingham are amazing.
Yeah one day they might get a manager who can match their club ones

Eh, we're still hungover from winning the euros honestly. Remember that? :D

Btw, smart of england to get relegated to group B so they can now look good against the likes of Hungary- Oh.

Never change England... memories of Croatia game in 2007. Southgate needs a decent world cup or will be out probably.

I’m not wasting another minute of my life watching a Southgate-team play ball again. The most negative football in modern football history. A total disgrace with the players he has to choose from. Well deserved relegation and I wish you good luck in the WC, England.

With Southgate’s luck, England will fluke their way to the semi finals again by facing much weaker opponents and get sent home when they meet their first decent opponent.

FA will reward him again with another contract extension.

Why shouldn't they? You realize Southgate is the most successfull england manager since Alf Ramsey? Who are they replacing the guy leading them to WC SF and Euro finals with, exactly?

This isn’t a golden generation, with the exception of Kane the rest would have stiff competition for places in any other national side.

Southgate’s managed to get them performing to a good standard because he focused on the work environment vibes instead of focusing on his job as a coach on the field, which he seems to leave up to his assistant. We’ve seen pretty shit teams, like Greece, win a euro before now because they were the best ‘team’ in the competition.

The issue with sacking Southgate is you run the risk of a fractious dressing room again where everyone hates each other and can’t wait to get back to club football. However there should be systems in place to stop that from happening now, regardless of who the next coach is.

This is the same argument people made for Ole to be kept on just because he got top 4 twice in a row and got as high as second.

The actual football is shit and he’s not getting the best out of the players. Luck can only carry you so far and the only way is down if he carry on as the manager.

It isn't. This isn't club football. You could have replaced Ole with any one of Conte, Tuchel, Pochettino, Potter, etc at any point

England don't have those options

Every England generation is golden if you listen to media, yet they never win anything.
They should look to other countries and maybe they will see that that English team is not as good as they are making out.
But I agree, Southgate is sh*t, always have been and always will be. So boring to watch.
