A part of is undoubtedly nostalgia but to be honest the 98 just looks better to the eye, more tough charachters in it as well compared to your pogba and Griezmanns of the world although that doesn't necessarily mean anything in footballing terms.1998 France is a bit overrated compared to 2018 France? 2018 had far better attacking options and 1998 was famous for its defence but 2018 could also defend as shown by shutting off Uruguay and Belgium in the quarters and semis.
Don't think there's much between them. Both teams were very hard to break down, but France 1998 had arguably the second best international defence of all time behind Italy in 1990. Each of the back four were among the greatest (top 10-15) in their position of all time, whereas I don't think the 2018 team's defence hits the same heights. For what it's worth France 1998 also scored more goals than France 2018, despite not having a functioning striker for the knockout stage.1998 France is a bit overrated compared to 2018 France? 2018 had far better attacking options and 1998 was famous for its defence but 2018 could also defend as shown by shutting off Uruguay and Belgium in the quarters and semis.
Yeah Varane is the only player in 2018 France that is in the calibre of the 1998 defence. But I’d rather Giroud as a non goal scoring striker than Guivarc’h, and Mbappe was far more dangerous than Djorkaeff. In midfield, Pogba and Kanté together were an all-time partnership and Matuidi was also as good if not better than the likes of Karembeau. Pogba in particular at that World Cup was absolutely top class, and maybe better than any French midfielder in the 1998 tournament, but his United spell no doubt sours the opinion of many unfortunately.Don't think there's much between them. The Euro 2000 team shits on both of them though.
Based on the level of difficulty, I would agree.1982 italy
1970 brazil
1974 Germany
1986 Argentina
2006 italy
1998 France
2014 Germany
2018 France
1978 Argentina
1994 brazil
2002 brazil
Not satisfied with this list at all but I guess it's ok for a preliminary list, besides it's just hard and almost nonsensical ranking diffrent national teams who competed in massively diffrent environments with diffrent opposition etc etc.
Spain 2010 is hard to rank , they should be close to the top if not outright the best on theory but their performance sure left a lot to be desired.
To be fair Italy usually seems to be slow to get in form when it comes to world cup but that's a fair point, their meager gs performance puts them down on the dominance factor.Based on the level of difficulty, I would agree.
It was the most difficult and impressive run from any team in the history of WC. They beat a former WC in Argentina, the best team in the world, a very strong Poland, and a typical West Germany. I get your points, even though I wouldn't rank them as number 1 due to their gs performances.

Yep just saw it, the top 3 is pretty much nailed on (although I can't bring myself to rank Spain that high) although I find it interesting how you rank Argentina 86 and Germany 90 on the opposite side of the spectrum.above this comment
Literally exactly this for me.1. Spain 2010
2. Brazil 2002
3. Germany 2014
4. France 2018
5. Italy 2006
How?This just isn’t true. That Spain team were so defensive that Mourinho wouldn’t be able to watch them.
Didn't Iniesta play most games (just further up instead of in the midfield 3)? And Alonso could progress the ball forward well. Busquets' role was more defensive.Tbf the Alonso/Busquets double pivot was unnecessarily defensive when they had the tried and tested Barca trio. Still it won them the tournament but in a boring fashion.
David Villa is still to this day massively underrated. Was the most important player at the tournament for the carry job he did of the entire Spanish attack
Spain only scored 8 goals thought the campaign in 2010 (the lowest of any winner in history). They only faced one previous winner (Germany in the SF).Unlike Mourinho, their opponents to a man conceded any sense of attacking intent in the games. They just parked massive buses and gave Spain the ball. Even after Spain went 1-0 up, they made no attempt to force the game.
How does Spain get classified as "so defensive"?
Not entirely true that every opponent just parked the bus. Chile went toe to toe with typical Bielsa football and looked good doing it, until a harsh sending off took a tactical toll on them. Germany and Netherlands didn't park the bus either, albeit Germany were very soundly contained by Spain's undeniably conservative possession approach for the game, and the Netherlands played dirty, cynical football, but they had been doing that in all of their other games too. How?

Agreed on Villa.
For me it would be in that order 2000, 1998, 2006 and 2018. I think that the 2018 is the one being overrated.Don't think there's much between them. Because they’re the single most defensive team ever. Pretty simple really. How?

France 2018? How are they stand out?Best:
Brazil 2002
France 2018
Brazil 1994
France 1998
Germany 2014
Worst:
Spain 2010
Italy 2006
A big reason is because they won the European Championships either side of the World Cup, and European teams were the strongest in the world at the time - as shown by 3 of the 4 teams in the 2010 WC being European.Spain only scored 8 goals thought the campaign in 2010 (the lowest of any winner in history). They only faced one previous winner (Germany in the SF).
How can they stand against the others? Argentina winning it in 1986, facing one previous winner at every single round except Belgium in the semis... Or Brazil from 2002, winning 7 in 7 and scoring 21 goals.
Agreed.Spain 2010 is unfairly categorized as cowardly, when the truth is that their opposition were the actual cowards that shut up shop from day 1.
It's interesting that all of them can also play very good football. Gentile was a very good player too.The 82 Italian side would take some beating but by today's standards they would not make half time with half their team on the pitch.
They could all play there is no doubt about that. It's interesting that all of them can also play very good football. Gentile was a very good player too.
Yep, it does seem that people are adding their performances at the Euros in 2008 and 2012 to elevate what they did in 2010.That Spanish team is so overrated. Got smashed 3-0 by the worst Brazil of all time. Greatest NT of all time, jesus christ..
Fully agree with your list in every aspect.Brazil 2002
Germany 2014
Italy 2006
France 2018
Spain 2010
Brazil 2002 and Germany 2014 were a joy to watch.
Spain dead last as they were such a snooze fest. They were lucky multiple times and probably the most boring WC of all time.
And you still have people labeling them as boringAgreed.
But also Roque Junior and Kleberson.Brazil 2002 is the best for me - that side had 2 balon'dor winners and another 2 future balon-dor winners (Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo and Kaka, though the latter only played a bit). Don't think any team can say they had that.
