So he only plays well in La Liga now? I’m not seeing anything outside of it

He lacks character for me. At the kind of price he’s valued at, you want someone with far more presence on the pitch, particularly when the chips are down. This guy isn’t going to be a driving force in turning the odds back in your favour, and he should be.

Barely looked like a £10 player today never mind a £100 million player

He does shield the ball fantastically well, you have to give him that.

Most passes of anyone on the pitch, by some distance too (91), best pass completion on the pitch too 92.3%.
Impossible to disposes.

He’s playing with some shite though sadly.
As referenced by a perfect 92.3% pass completion.

He's a very good player, typical Caf reactionaries to a single performance. He's a good player no doubt. Probably would be pretty good working alongside Casemiro.

He has the ability to be dictating a game like this; high pass completion rates alone don't speak for influence on the pitch.

This guy is in the what, £75m+ bracket? Are his displays representative of that kind of outlay?

Him & Cas would be an absolute cheat code. Unless he shows a willingness to come though I’m not doing this to myself.

We could really do with a player that can take a ball under any kind of pressure and move us as a team, someone who can outpass the opposition midfielder in a game like today by 50% and still have ridiculously high pass completion stats.
With that plus Cas, the 4 guys up top can do the rest.

Some of you are mad. He'd suit us perfectly. Him Casemiro and Bruno would easily be amongst the best midfields in the league.

The young De Jong, the one who made his name, was a driving force on the pitch with the same kind of pass completion rates as seen now. He just doesn't take on as much of the game as his ability demands he should anymore - plays well within himself, which, to me, suggests a lack of character.

Wanted him here, probably still do, but I don't hold him in the same light as a player anymore. Don't think he wants to be 'the man' that he once was and seemed to handle effortlessly. He should be the talk of a game like this, not just a tidy part of the furniture.

If the Netherlands go through, maybe he shows some of the character of yore; there's no reason for this not to be his time to really stand out from the pack.

They say he should play DM.

He made 0 tackles and 1 interception

I know he likes to get the ball deep and dribble or find a pass with it, but you need more than that from your DM. He'd probably be okay with 2 players playing DM

He is just not that good. That Ajax SF team needs to be rejudged. Whatever quality they had really hasn't translated elsewhere.

If Spain's national team was a single person, it would be Frenkie de Jong.

We’ve just watched 120 mins of what a midfield with FdJ looks like. Just endless recycling of the ball in the middle of the pitch. Even his pass map which others were making a mess of their pants about demonstrates what he does, short or sideways, usually both. Great, he doesn’t give the ball away, he doesn’t give it away because he takes the easy short pass over and over.

I’m not saying he’s rubbish he’s obviously a decent player, but I don’t want him here, he doesn’t want to be here and he doesn’t really suit what we want. With a bit of patience and some scouts worth their pay, we can undoubtedly do better for that kind of money.
