fecking hell...he was the top soccer journalist in the U.S. for a while now, even after leaving Sports Illustrated. In general, he was a top sports journalist. Incredibly sad.
And don’t forget that by “leaving Sports Illustrated” you are referring to him being fired by SI because he criticized their fragile ego CEO for slashing the pay of workers during the pandemic.

This is shocking. RIP.

I think there are US military bases in Qatar, I hope they will do the autopsy there.

Doubt its anything other than natural causes, he went to a doctor they said bronchitis but heart attacks symptoms can appear for more than 7 days.

Sounds like a heart attack to me, pressure in chest and sweats thinking its a cold.

Malpractice kills the most people each year, the doctor didn't diagnose a 50 year old man correctly where heart attacks are common.

It sounds more like misdiagnosis.

Lets see what comes out but I doubt Qatar murdered a journalist at a WC. He collapsed at the presser after feeling unwell for a week.

How didn't he go back to the doctor after having pressure in his chest?

I would be shocked if it's not natural causes. Tragic as it is, it does happen. May his soul rest in peace.

I honestly doubt they're that stupid to kill an American Citizen over something he wrote. Let's just wait for autopsy report
Agree. Me think Qatar is not stupid enough to do it brazenly. It was reported he wasnt feeling good a few days prior cause of lack of sleep/stress/etc.

What horrible news. While a heart condition/lung problem are valid speculation, could somebody please tell me if Grant suffered any blows in particularly to the head when he was arrested and temporarily detained?

If there is a strange element to this, it is plausible it happened during his detention for the crime of wearing a T shirt representing views that the Quatari authorities vehemently oppose. It`s unbelievable Grant is gone but please tell me if anything happened to him in detention.

Very sad this, I didn't know much about him until the incident few days ago.

I'd be amazed if it's a murder involving Qatari authorities, given their extremely close ties with US.

Very rash to suggest he was murdered.

There has been so much death surrounding this World Cup. On the pitch it's been pretty gripping. However, at the back of your mind, there's always a knawing feeling that this whole thing is just off.

I am not going to throw around any allegations. I am just going to hope the guy's family can recover his body quickly. Even if his death was entirely coincidental, it's just a reminder that so many deaths around this World Cup weren't.

Damn, sad to see. I’d hate that people start trying to use his good name to throw accusations and conspiracies out there. Let them do their investigations and ascertain the facts. It’s most likely natural causes which is also scary as he was young. RIP Grant.

Awww, man. Always enjoyed reading his work. He was a massive champion of football in the US. This one hurts.

A journalist collapsed and tried to be resuscitated but failed. Days leading to this he had some medical issues. But no, let's jump the gun and throw accusations to no less government of Qatar. What a world we live in.

Yup. Also we know the preferred way to murder journalists for these middle east dictators is to call them into the embassy and chop them up. So most likely not an assassination.

There are lots of journalists covering stories like he was who haven’t died. It seems premature and unnecessary to fall in behind the words of a grieving family member to assume foul play. Particularly when you hear suggestions he had been unwell.

Football writer Grant Wahl dies at World Cup match between Argentina and Netherlands in Qatar

He wrote on Monday on his website that he had visited a medical clinic while in Qatar.
“My body finally broke down on me. Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you,” Wahl wrote. “What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort.”
Wahl wrote that he tested negative for Covid-19 and sought treatment for his symptoms.

We will find out soon enough. He was a healthy guy in good shape covering very controversial issues that embarrassed the Qatari government.
Who visited a Qatari hospital having felt unwell and they treated him with a course of antibiotics and cough medicine - which he said had improved his health. There's no evidence here to support foul play.

A cold "over the last 10 days" and talk of his body breaking down due to overworking cannot be described as a "healthy guy in good shape"

Will we? Who will be doing the autopsy? How quickly do you think the Qataris will release his body to USA?

Jesus, some folk are well and truly lost down the conspiracy theorist rabbit hole, aren’t they?

And these same folk are also the very ones who tar others with the ‘stupid’ and ‘crazy’ tag.

Incredible.

Seriously. Reeks of casual racism. I doubt whether this would even be discussed like this if it were hosted in Europe.

Even if they hated him, I doubt Qatar are stupid enough to kill a prominent US citizen during a world cup they are hosting.

As someone said, if Qatar started targeting journalists who have covered the migrant workers issues and showed LGBT support the body count would be a lot higher.

Didn't he say himself he was suffering from bronchitis and was still being made to work day and night? He was feeling discomfort during the Netherlands USA game.

Bit crass to say like that even if the signs point to his death being of natural causes
It happens. A man near me around the same age died similarly the other day. It happens, don't see the need to jump to rash conclusions without any solid evidence to suggest otherwise.

As my memory goes he wasn’t arrested, merely refused entry. I’m sure if there were any blows it would have been reported at the time.

Those kinds of deaths are very unlikely this long after the fact, most with very obvious symptoms in the hours immediately following the injury (including death, which is significantly more likely to come in the 24 hours after). The symptoms he’s been suffering seemingly for a few days now also don’t match what you’d expect from a traumatic brain injury, much less weeks after the fact.

If he was murdered for covering the LGBTQ and migrant issues then there need to be serious repercussions
Not a good look to make such speculations without any clear indications, I must say.

Overworking perhaps? Covering so many matches? Him being ill and probably the heat doesnt help.

Our last 2019 general elections cost a 894 death due to overexhaustion of having to meet the dealine.

Is there any evidence whatsoever to suggest foul play? Didn’t he die in the stadium covering the match? If it was poison it will show up in autopsy. Fit and healthy people drop dead unfortunately

I have no idea either, yet.
Could be any number of things, poor guy and must be extra traumatic for his family with all the speculation. I'd presume working in that heat might put stress on some one not used to it, especially if that work was stressful investigative work.

The speculation does show the lack of trust in the regime though.

Qatar are smart enough to not murder a foreign national, while the eyes of the world are upon them, and it’s not that uncommon for people who are under stress to have heart attacks like this.

Should be investigated, but I would expect natural causes. Wouldn’t make it any less tragic, of course.
