Yeah, Silva is better than Varane and Casemiro is better than Fabregas.

Regarding Fernandez, very good player but they're overpaying by about 50m if they really pay that much for him.

I don’t think you watched Silva in his prime and nearly all your points are wrong or arguable especially Varane being better in the air.
Might not have watched him enough. Again, like I said, he hurt himself by not being in one of the biggest leagues. And again - he may have been a very talented individual as a CB, but has he ever been part of a great CB partnership? The answer to that is no. And that's as important as anything for a CB.

As for better in the air.... I'm not sure what makes Thiago Silva better at that? He's 10 cm shorter than Varane, and Varane is arguably as athletic as any CB in the modern era.

Anyway, agree to disagree. Both world class CB's. One has been ridiculously successful and a key part of great defences, the other hasn't been. Judging defenders to me has always been as much if not more about how they form a collective. And if a player isn't forming a great collective defence, then they aren't as good as the one that does.

Bro just YouTube him at AC Milan he was a beast. The big hint is the amount of money PSG spent on him as soon as they got cash to blow.

Technically he’s way above a Varane (No disrespect to Varane either).
Serie A was already underwhelming while Thiago Silva was there with AC Milan.
And then he played for PSG in Ligue 1, not that the best quality of leagues

He didn't look precisely great in the UCL games against big teams, if PSG isn't getting close to win the UCL, is not because of attackers (they are always scoring)... their defense is just always leaking stupid goals, and throwing away big leads.

And i don't think you can mention money as an argument, otherwise Grealish,Lukaku,Coutinho, and Kepa are the best on their position cause someone didn't hold back and paid lot of money for them.

Thiago Silva is great, but i don't think he better than Varane.

YouTube is literally the most useless way to judge a defender. You shouldn't judge a defender based on individual plays. You can tell their on ball ability, sure, and Thiago Silva no doubt is better there, but defensively, you judge defenders by how well they form a solid defence, and how they keep out goals and deal with star attackers as a group. And I'd say there's a gap there between what Varane has done as a key CB for club and for country compared to Thiago Silva. If as a CB you haven't been part of a great team defence, then I don't rate your individual ability as much.

Indeed, Thiago played in a past it Serie A and then PSG in Ligue 1...

His performance against big teams in the UCL knock out games weren't precisely great...PSG was always leaking stupid goals...even when they knocked Bayern out, the germans were missing Lewandowski as they created a lot but no one could score, PSG defense looked as shaky as always.

Yup precisely. If a player is rocking out against mediocre opposition, that doesn't make him better than a CB who is class in the biggest league against the best opposition. So if we compare their performances in the CL, or the World Cup.. well it's night and day between the 2 in those competitions, isn't it?

He was great in Chelsea's winning campaign against Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and was doing fine in the final against Man City before he got injured.

I'm not interested in Varane v Silva but Silva was instrumental in Chelsea's run to the trophy a couple of years ago.

Will be interesting to see who you consider elite if they both weren’t considered.

Big shame he's Chelsea bound, great potential.

They must be Chelsea finished now with signings including the summer though.

So, right in time to see his new club smashed on Thursday.

Excellent player, (and potential), but shitload of money. Tbf, looking at that Chelsea midfield yesterday they had to do something and do fast, so doubt any of their fans will care.

Yep, that's the thing.

Thiago Silva with PSG looked great against inferior opposition in games where PSG was favorite, when the opposition were teams as good as PSG like City,Barcelona,Bayern,Real Madrid, Chelsea, etc he was far from great.

Thiago Silva is better with the ball than Varane, Varane is great with the ball himself, but Silva is even better...thing is I judge defenders first for how good they are defending, then the rest.

Well you could find a full game if you want

I was just picking material where you could see his ball playing ability, speed and physicality. Which is as all used as comparison tools. He’s overall defensive play well you can see that at Chelsea. Yes he’s a lot more older and experienced. But it’s easy to see he’s a top level defender. So imagine that at his peak Physical prowess.

Someone mentioned what he’s achieved at AC and PSG. To that all I have to say is it’s a team game. If Varane had played in those teams instead it would have hardly went any different.

Say he is t one of the very best midfielders on the world, BUT he is very, very good … enough that people think of him as elite for your club for 7 to 8 years. The other players you’re considering are all going to be in the 60 to 75 range due to January … and they are a noticeable step below as judged by your staff.

You have little to no chance of winning this player if it goes to Summer.

At that point you aren’t just paying for the player. You are paying for other variables as well. And they HAVE money; it is those other variables they need to overcome.

I go back to Vivell and the new staff. They knew Gvardiol well, and said “don’t spend that money. There is someone else we like.”

Vivell is down there in Portugal saying “spend that money if it can be structured correctly” for Enzo… and part of the process is trusting the talented group of player personnel people we brought in.

Like I said though - Thiago Silva absolutely does get punished for his career decisions. He's a top CB, but I don't see how I can rate him above Varane when Varane was world class and showed everything and won everything for club and for country. Why is it that Thiago Silva couldn't be successful with Brazil or PSG but that Varane could with Real Madrid and France? It's excuses without basis. PSG's problem in the CL for years was their defence, not their attack. Thiago Silva was the leader of that defence.

He's exactly the type of midfielder Liverpool need so rather Chelsea get him as I doubt he does much for them

Chelsea are in the CL.

Also, we've seen with Casemiro that "the project" (and a bit of money) counts for a lot more than the current league position.
I think the biggest surprise for me, is that Chelsea's squad right now is objectively very unimpressive, and for someone like Enzo, they have a nobody as manager with a boring name who have struggled massively this season (it's not like he would know a whole lot about Graham Potter let's be real). Obviously still a big club, big money and a lot of reasons where it's fine, but i do think given Chelsea's situation right now, it's a huge coup to be able to bring him in. Maybe his agent felt nobody could compete with the price so no need to hold out? Or the statement of spending so much with the promise of continuing the crazy spending.

If Chelsea are paying in installments, it is weird the lad didn't hold on a little bit longer till the summer. There would be better offers coming, if he really is worth all this ridiculous hype.

Jorge Mendes brokered the deal and represented Enzo Fernández. Based on the recent reports, it looks like Benfica will only receive €120m of the full €127m amount. I think Jorge Mendes is going to bank the €7m and give a bit of it to the player.

There's no way this deal would have been completed had Jorge Mendes not have been involved.

It’s abit like big players moving to United over the years. Big club but in all honesty. Chelsea are going to need a good 5 years to fix. So big gamble for him.

That's nothing crazy for agent fees. It's more the overall price of it. Go to Chelsea now, or wait for a maybe 5% more preferable option in United or Liverpool in the summer and take the risk that they will spend big on you?

Yeah... I'd say it would've been similar to Pogba to United, but United had the lure of Ibra and new Mourinho that summer (and the return factor). I really think Chelsea's stock has taken a big hit, and they don't have Tuchel anymore who was a big lure, and just don't play well at all and have a shit squad. So it's definitely a surprise that he's jumping at the first chance to move. We'll see how it turns out, I think he's class but Chelsea need to fill a lot of gaps, and Potter needs to adapt to a big club and we'll see if he can even implement the right system. The money being spent is insane, and Boehly is definitely a transfer Muppet who just goes for anyone, but might work.

I see what you mean now. For Benfica, they could have waited until the summer in the hopes that one or more clubs would trigger the release clause, but I think they decided to bank on Enzo now given how high his stock currently is. Even if he finished the season on a high note, there's very little chance that a club would trigger the release clause. One then wonders why Enzo didn't wait until the summer for more interest, but he seems happy enough to leave for Chelsea this soon.

River Plate also get 25% from a sell-on clause if I'm not mistaken.
