What's with the salt RiP

I think most Arsenal supporters here have been quite objective in their assessment aside from a few cheeky windups here and there.

Why so serious.
This is why Arsenal can't win the league.

Salt?

I just don't get why you're trying to find any positives in the game from yesterday! If it panned out like that for Utd, I'd be disappointed.

And I find it strange that in a year where there's so much to be positive about, so much progress made, so much consistency... Why it's so difficult for a fanbase to also recognise some shortcomings (which seems to be a common trait for Arsenal fans).

At the end of the day it doesn't matter much to me how you feel about it, but I'm on a message board and I was subjected to that game yesterday so I'm gonna discuss it.
You can still be disappointed but try and find some positives, they aren't mutually exclusive.

I think they didn’t start full strength incase they still lost or got a hiding and then that would have hurt them mentally for the upcoming league matches.

Basically shit out not to have a mental effect on the team leading into the league matches

Spot on. Everything is deemed to be personal or a slight against them. It feels like an inferiority complex of sorts.

I think pretty much every United fan prefers them to win the league over City. They would have also enjoyed seeing them knock them out last night.

Ultimately they had a fully rested and fit squad and should have been looking to go to City and make a statement. Not only that position themselves nicely for a cup double.

As it happened they rotated a few players, but ended up playing every one of them anyway, and bowed out of the competition with a limp performance.

I do find it odd Arsenal fans are happy with that I must say.

What happens in a few weeks in the league against City is what will really make up their mind.

Avoid defeat, basically sealing the league. Yesterday is forgotten.

Get beat, losing most or all of their lead in the league. Some Arsenal fans may start having some serious regrets. For the rest, the top-4 trophy is secure and they'll be happy no matter what.

There's a difference with being happy with something and being accepting of something.
Even with your strongest XI the Etihad is a horrible place to go to get a result. We've a shocking record there, so everyone new whatever it be a tough game.

People talk about City being poor, with no mention of the fact perhaps we set up well in terms of containing them, because let's be honest you need to a fair bit of that at their ground.

Sure, we could have been a bit braver, played with more intensity etc but perhaps we aren't mentally there yet at the toughest of grounds. Can see at Old Trafford we aren't quite there yet, I expect games at Anfield to still be as difficult as well.

Why would they care about the cup in their situation?

I'm so confused as to what some of the issues are here.

We went away to almost a full strength City (based on their current league team).

We rested half our team.

And.. we still barely loss and we played much better than them in the first half.

I haven't got issues with Arteta resting players. Turner, Tomi, Tierney, Vieira, Trossard all needed the minutes so that if they are needed in the league they're ready. The game showed why Sambi isn't the guy and probably never will be too.

Confused as to why there's any criticism?

Think the game showed that Holding and Sambi don't really have a big future here. I'd keep Holding around, but Sambi can be replaced by hopefully Caicedo and Patino next year. We need more from Vieira too, but happy to give him a year to acclimatise as he obviously has some talent. Trossard looked very good first half, him and Martinelli will be good competition.

It’s because your club is in a league position that their club wants to be in!

Perhaps it’s the glass half empty v glass half full analogy.

United didn’t win a treble and multiple domestic doubles by having that mentality.

Arsenal have been really good this season and are capable of winning the league and more. Perhaps their fans don’t believe that and nor does their coach and players?

Are we? The consensus between pundits and rival fans before the start of the season was that we weren't making top 4. During most of the season, it was that we weren't winning the league due to a thin squad. Interesting that now (before the City game) we're seen as being capable of winning a treble. I guess this is a reflection on how much Arteta has been able to make this team over perform.

You seem to be implying that Arteta is doing the same ?
I was making a joke about how Pep's always overthinks his game plan in big games (e.g., Switching to 3 defenders against Lyon, No DM against Chelsea in the CL final). Biggest tactical change I've seen Arteta make for a game was dropping Zinchenko and Tierney for Tomiyasu at LB against Liverpool.

It's already a big stretch to win the league this year considering how "lucky" we've been so far to be able to field the same team in every game. But somehow we should go all out in every cup and think about a treble ? Everybody is panicking because Partey might have a bruised rib and miss a game against Everton, that tells you we're not and should not be confident with our depth.

Even if we don't win the title, nobody will care about this game or this season's FA Cup. I expect Arteta to field similar teams when the EL restarts. The only goal is the league or worst case scenario, CL qualification.

Arsenal are barely capable of winning the league, if that. Forget about more. Fans and coaches are realistic, and know that they shouldn't overextend themselves after spending years in obscurity.

I mean yeah? You should aim to win everything you can. That’s what successful teams do and those that strive to be successful should do.

You’ve had a week either side of this game so there’s hardly a fixture pile up. You ended up playing all of your first team last night anyway and still couldn’t do a great deal. Very flat performance.

It was a good opportunity missed.

Over extend? By playing one game a week at the moment? Hmm okay.

This group is not a successful team. It hasn't won anything yet and it strives to be by planning and building carefully, not going all out on 11 bodies for 60 games.
You can't compare Odegaard and Partey playing 20/45min to full games even a week apart. This is not how the human body work.

Essentially you start with your strongest team together, secure the tie, then bring them off.

Arteta made a mess of it really and didn’t actually end up resting anyone fully (and still lost the tie).

Just seems like a weak attitude really but if you’re happy with it no problem!

Football has changed a lot since then, that's a fact. Also, the idea that the attitude of the fans has such an influence on a result the football equivalent to astrology.
What’s changed to validate whatever point you’re making?

I’m also unsure why you are referring to astrology.

Even if you think that is true, that would actually be worrying.

But it's not true anyhow, unless you only watched the first half (which was pretty even, Arsenal shaded it somewhat but it was poor from both teams). Second half, apart from a 10mn push from Arsenal, was cruise control from City. They were overall a bit shit, but actually better than Arsenal and deserved to win.

It's amazing how when Arsenal lose, people absolutely try to turn it into some positive and want to make out like they were better or moral victors cos they had a couple of shots on goal.

I guess everyone has been so used to them being shit over the years that this passes as good.
I’m not spinning it into a positive or moral victory. From what I can see, it’s the opposite with people suggesting the game is some psychological blow or an indication that they’re not up to the task.

Personally I thought Arsenal had the better of the play, but either way it was a poor game with both sides looking tepid. Neither looked convincing and I wouldn’t view it with any significance whatsoever.

A few of you seem to wear the fact you weren’t fancied to do as well before the season started as some kind of badge of honour. When people then start to praise the team and coach you want to play it down and suggest you’re not capable.Very weird.

You’re team is doing great and the season is falling perfectly for you to take advantage of what’s happening at your rivals. That’s when you push on.

There was a solid opportunity to win not only the league but go deep in a domestic competition too. Sadly you’ve flopped at it.

The meltdown here is pretty funny. Our squad isn’t as deep as City’s so we rotated to protect our title challenge against them. It was an even game that we lost by a single goal.

I actually would have preferred for us to rotate more than we did as Partey ended up getting injured. I hope it’s not serious as El Neny may be out for the season and Lokonga’s positioning and application is suspect.

It’s been pointed out that United wouldn’t have won the treble with that mentality. That’s true. It’s also true that in 1999 they had the strongest squad in the league, arguably the planet. We don’t, so we prioritised our title challenge over the cup we’ve won 4 times in the last 9 years.

We can all play armchair psychologist, but our issue is squad depth. The club is trying to rectify that before the window closes. If we can’t, then we’ll have an actual problem on our hands.

Tell me how rotating, but playing all your key players anyway, has helped the title challenge? Especially when your next game is a week away against Everton..

It doesn’t really work which is the point.

Yeah, and they have to play us knowing a loss would put them even further back

This is another thing rival fans/pundits are getting wrong with Arsenal.

Were not scared of City, were not intimidated by them and view our two games against them as an opportunity.
Big talk. And I would actually prefer Arsenal to Citeh.

I’m not sure what your point is, I said my preference would have been for us to rotate more than we did.

The next game being a week away is not hugely relevant. My issue is the total number of minutes in the players legs over the course of the season and the amount of games they miss through injuries. If you don’t see how squad rotation affects those two things, then nothing I say will convince you.

Yeah thinking about it, it really is as simple as securing the tie against Pep's Man City away then bring them off.
Is securing the tie getting a 2-0 lead ? 3 ? Just to be sure how we should go about it next time.

To give the players that hardly play game time incase they need it for the 2nd half of the season?

I’d have done the same if I was Arteta. He might well consider the FA cup to be his third priority behind the league and Europa league, difficult to know.

I'm not even sure Arteta would be that bothered by the result. To a non-Arsenal fan, it seems that the squad is thin and that any title challenge can only be sustained by keeping fatigue levels down. If that's the priority (and if it's a real chance at a genuine title challenge), I can see focusing on that would be the approach to take.

Either way, Arteta couldn't have continually picked the best 11 for every single match and every competition. If he had to rest some starters, this was the time.

The only people stressed about this 4th rd. Fa cup result are non Arsenal fans.
it’s a bit like how most people that wanted Arteta sacked for not being good enough for Arsenal were non Arsenal fans.
in fact it’s great to see how calm Arsenal fans are, knowing exactly what the aim is this season, there’s no need to mention it, it’s clear we’d bin the EL too for 1 more point in the premier league.
