EL D Europa League Quarter-Final 1st Leg

Manchester United 2:2 Sevilla

Post-match discussion

Maybe I’m naive but I genuinely don’t know why people get at ten Hag for things like this.

We’re 2-0 up and he’s trying to manage a thin squad / protect certain players from fatigue. Had martial stayed on and got a knock people would have cursed him. It’s not his fault we have half a squad of sub par players ffs.

No Rashford, no Martinez, no Varane. Not much reason to watch this team anymore.

I am more angry at the Martinez and Varane injuries than the result.
We are in serious trouble if we have to rely on Maguire and Lindelof for the run in.

The game wasn't beyond Sevilla because we didn't put it beyond them. After their first went in, everybody could just see that the second was inevitable after the Martinez injury. We put ourselves under unnecessary pressure.

Meh. We were all over them in the first half.

If ever a game showed you how still so far away from being a top team we are it was that. Beyond pathetic second half performance and utterly useless and second rate squad players coming on and bringing the game down a level.

I warned everybody that winning the EL is a ridiculously hard task.
It required a Jose special and favourable draw for us to win it 6 yrs ago.
The odds of us winning the EL were low before the game today. Now, they are ridiculously low.

In saying all of this, it's not game over. It's an open game and we still have a good chance of winning the away leg, by 1 goal.

Either way, it's going to be a cagey boring match with both teams aiming to score a single winning goal. Like a chess match.

We played absolutely amazing football in this match.....

I cant comprehend how we drew this match, from fresh viewing i don't understand why Anthony and Bruno came off, they were the life of the team, Weghorst shouldn't play a match for us again.

This match is a real kick in the gut as at one stage i was wondering how many goals we would score against them.

So frustrating

Wasn't a great night in the end. Eth getting some stick for the subs but if he doesn't take martial off and he pulls up with an injury everyone would be whinging.

The manager should be able to bring players on that can cope with a 2-0 lead. We still need some depth so that's just where we are at.

Some of the dramatics on here are over the top. Two ridiculously lucky own goals and poor mentality cost united. The season is far from over. Even if we go out of the Europa there is plenty to play for.

Mortifying. The injuries, the bad substitutions, own goals. Just absolutely terrible

Should have been an easy win, but turned into a nightmare of a night. Damn.

Once again, we are hampered by the lack of killer instinct in the final third and not having quality back-ups.

That has to be the worst subs swap of all time.

Elanga and Weghorst was too bigger downgrade.

And I absolutely detest shithouse Spanish teams

They were on the ropes, 0-2 down, then Ten Hag decided to make wholesale changes. What was he thinking? I still think we'll nick a win in Spain but I've having some concerns about Ten Hag's game management.

A freak outcome, but we played way too casually for 45 minutes, as if there was never going to be any more goals in the tie – for us or them. Better teams kill that match with more goals or, at the very least, control it and exert consistent pressure. We were miles better against Everton this weekend.

The subs from the manager sent the wrong message too. That tie was clearly not dead.

Sevilla did have one shot on target in the second half and scored two goals. This loss and the loss of Martinez is on Malacia, if he ain’t that braindead we walk away with a 2-0 lead (or 3-0 if he doesn’t hesitate and scores) and a healthy leader at the back.
I can’t get my head around how we threw that one away in about ten minutes. Sevilla showed nothing, and we had this under control despite not being at our best. Damn, that’s a downer.

Well at least Maguire won't have to worry about getting racially abused online.

Can't even describe how pissed off I am at the lads.

Don't see how we will possibly win the second leg either.

Disgraceful all around

Incoming Martial is injured too...

Look Liverpool were in the same boat as us last year. With this amount of games it really is nearly impossible to get through unscathed. They had loads of injuries too.

However most concerning is their form this year which I believe is as a result of last year. Next season could be a bloody nightmare.

Disastrous second half performance and result. The end to the season just got a lot more difficult.

I can't see us winning the second leg without Rashford and a makeshift back 4.

The five players ETH puts on in the 2nd half were among our 6 worst players today. So poor decisions from ETH - he did not take this game serious enough. I am so diasapointed.

Eriksen was poor.
Weghorst was very poor.
Elanga was played so little this season, and then he comes on in an game like this :wenger:
Pellistri did not touch the ball
Maguire did ok, but was unlucky to score an own goal.

But the worst player of them all was Malacia. He is the worst left back, I can remember in United.

Man how can we be so unlucky, those two own goals are mad
I’d say the Maguire one was a total fluke where nothing could be done, but Malacia totally deserves most of the blame for the first one. It was just a totally unforced error to let the ball go past him like that, and a further question mark over his defending.

Taking off Bruno was weird. He never normally rest him. He is now suspended for second leg. Surely you keep him on.

Wasn't the time to ease Eriksen back in there, Fred was the sub to make. Otherwise, that front line at the end basically said "Hey Sevilla, go for it", and using all 5 subs was and always will be daft.

Let's see if the manager takes the blame for this one in his presser. He should but he wont

This nonsense about the subs, our strength in depth is gash and the starters had seriously dropped off before a single sub was made… constantly looking for a reason to slate ETH, get a grip.

F@ck me, everything that could possibly go wrong 2nd half, went f@ckin wrong, but still confident we'll beat the wankers over there.

TBF, most of us knew we weren't a top team at this time.
We did well against Barcelona, but beating 2 good teams in a row seems out of our reach.
We can still do it in Spain. Gotta go for a 1-0 win.

Absolutely disastrous game after it all started so well. So much of what happened in that second half was a nightmare that I don't even have the energy to go into it all. Really feel defeated after that and conceded about it's potential impacts on the rest of our season.

Freak final 10 mins, result isn’t a disaster as we’ll beat them away, they just got lucky.

Injuries to Varane and Martinez are devastating however.

Difficult result to take, until one moment of madness we were cruising.
We’re still well in the tie though and very capable of being them on their patch, big effort will be needed but even with the injuries we’re a good team.
