Ronaldo loves three things; himself, his stats, and attention. I agree he’s probably regretting this. His self love remains undiminished, but the stats he racks up there count for nothing because no one takes them seriously, and since he’s gone out there, no one cares about what he does except his most ardent fans, and those who feed off the schadenfreude of watching him be shit. In terms of “playing retirements”, Messi has gone to MLS and it’s made waves around the world in terms of the type of interest it has garnered, because he’s gone to a celebrity culture, with better marketing and more widespread coverage. And I’m sure that grates like nothing else. Plus, with all these other players going to Saudi, players who are currently better than Ronaldo, I’m sure his exploits there will be over shadowed anyway. Not that they’ve been particularly great anyway. Wasn’t he outscored last season by a player no one had ever heard of?
Since he arrived he scored more goals than anyone. The guys ahead of him were their for a full season, in half a season he was next to them in the scoring charts.

I'm very very sure that the record or milestone plays on Ronaldo's (and his fans') mind whereas Messi may not even given it a thought at this time.
And the irony though, you seems to always care what's on his (or his fan's) mind.

Thank you. It was an absurd comment.

I mean let’s just use logic here…. For the better part of 15+ years Ronaldo and Messi have literally shared the stage atop of world football and have won 12 Balon D or between them. Even if you think Messi is the best (which is fine) Ronaldo won 5 Balon D or in the the same time messi was in his prime.

So if this guy literally was head to head and shoulder to shoulder with Messi (at one point it was 5-5 in Balon d or) then how on earth is one top 4 and the other “outside of top 10”.

Defies logic and makes zero sense because it’s very easy to put this equation I guess you can say together.

If these guys were neck to neck competing with each other all of their careers but one is outside top 10 and the other is top 5 then we only have 2 options,

Either Messi is outside of top 10 as well or Ronaldo is all the way up top next to his little pal.

Which one makes more sense ?

I swear people defy the use of logic and reason due to petty hate. Beyond ignorant.
I don't think having Messi in the top 3 automatically has to mean Cristiano is top 5. There have been many exceptional players who you could see between them, such as Maradona, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Pelé, Ronaldo or even di Stefano, Puskas, Best, Zidane, Ronaldinho, Eusebio or Zico - especially when peak matters more to you than longevity. Those were great players in their own right. Personally, I think CR7 is high up in the tier below the absolute elite one so could top 5 generally sounds right.

Anyway, I still think he's severely underrated these days and ironically part of the reason is that he won those UCLs for Madrid. He's been a far more goal oriented player after 2013 or so and since the most successful period in his career startet around then, people automatically think of this player when debating. The CR7 in his first 3-4 Madrid years was something else and gave Messi a run for his money. I think he also suffers a bit from people overhyping him back then, arguing he's gotten ahead of Messi when it was clear who the better player was after CR7 became more of a "poacher" (he obviously wasn't a poacher but nowhere near the complete attacker he used to be either).

its always funny to see cristiano fans trying to make it like if he was the main reason why Portugal won the euro while his controbution to it wasn't that big in fact they beat france the host in the final WITHOUT him ...

was he the top scorer ? no
was he ever the best player in any tournament portugal played in ? no

in world of stats ... goals stats yeah Cristiano is one of the best goalscorer

other than that you can never put his name in top 10 all time

Messi
Maradona
Pele
R9
Zidane
Cruyeff
Ronaldinho
Baggio
Rivaldo
Best /Henry

if we talking about overall performance / talent ..... cristiano is a top 5 between 06 to 2015 other than it's only a delusional .... btw facts isn't hate
I think that is a bad post and as bad as those of his fanboys on twitter. You really can't totally ignore his goalscoring ability and achievements. And at his peak he had very good allround play even if not genius level.

Part of the reason why such posts come up is Ronaldo's obsession with goals. After he turned 30, he was prettymuch a poacher especially at Madrid and that was, Ironically, his most successful period. That is what people remember.

I agree with the Euro 2016 part. He really wasn't good in that tournament. But, TBF, it took place at a time when his decline had started and he had become a poacher.

For me, you just can't ignore his goals and combining that with longevity and success means he has to be fourth in the all-time list after Messi, Pele and Maradona.

If you talk about his peak only than there are imo others who were better. From the ones I saw, Messi, Maradona, R9 and Ronaldinho were better.

Interms of pure approach play, its complicated. I've always maintained that there is that intangible quality/genius his game has always lacked. It has always felt like watching a robot who perfected certain things in the game.

CR7 is comfortably better than Henry, Rivaldo, Best, and Baggio.

And Platini was better than Zidane for me.

Leaving TOPs and such aside, your post made me think of Cristiano as a player and his traits and style.

In a general view and regarding the upper echelon of the all time best (that BTW is quite UNFAIR and far from a set in stone list, some players just didn't have the best timing in their carreers, or even monsters like Maradona or Zico had to deal with quite a lot of bad timing), Cristiano is a more role oriented player (a versatile forward, not just a goalscorer or striker).
Same thing can be said for R9, Romario, Eusebio BUT when we are talking about freaks of the sport, the very very best were allways almost wild cards.
Some that ended playing their trait in the whole field (Alfredo), others forwards but with extraordinary midfielder abilities (Puskas, Pele) that could played and excell in almost any offensive task.
Adding to this capability, those fellas tend to be extremely freaky gifted in the vision and technical department.

At the same time even more specific role oriented players like Cristiano in the past, have been closer to a prodigy in pure terms of ability than him (R9 as an example), yet of course CR ain't no slouch, or a mere goaslcorer poacher, pretty far from that.
That it's why even to this day players like Di Stefano, Cryuff, Pele and Maradona are still being talked, while others we sadly do not talk enough and they deserved to be at least mentioned, like Platini or Zico.

Cristiano therefore is in a "strange" place when we leave aside his achievements and we talked about his characteristics as a player.

He is a an extraordinary forward, striker, that ain't R9, Pele nor a Puskas but neither is a Müller, Hallaand or Rummennigge and is clearly above them.
He never was an out of this world midfielder or wild card (Platini, Maradona, Zico), but he can yet produce the goods within his style as an assister, the ocasional great ball and break lines with his ability and pace.

Anyway I trully think that we should never try to find ONE GOAT, nor an ultimate ONE LIST involving every period, we also would only end preffering one fella because of personal reasons from a group of out of this world talents and like I've said before we also should respect them in their Periods (people even forget how consistent and extraordinary numbers and titles players like Pele, Puskas, Di Stefano had when salivate about Messi and CR, it's, normal, they are the latest best).
Messing around with eras it's not fair for anyone and kind of a lack of respect for everyone of them brought to just one all time table.
Also so many variables have to be take in account and the majority of them while should have to be seen as one of the two sides of a coin, on contrair people tend to choose one side and just stick with it as an ultimate truth.

At the end of the day and in an extremely subjective view I consider him a Phenom with Genius numbers and trophy cabinet, in fact with a better numbers than many "established "Geniuses and also extremely talented players closer to genius level of ability like Sivori, Best, Zidane, RG, etc.
He is for me A Phenom among Phenoms, that due to the Social Media, extreme yellow press reigning nowadays and corporate media, he's trapped in extreme hiperboles: the BEST ever or PENALDO and everything in between is quite a fvck up salad.

Another goal for Ronaldo, that’s 3 goals in 4 games to start the season. Almost scored a cracking solo effort which hit off of the bar:

I know you hate the debate so here you go, Messi has 5 goals in his first 5 games for his new club, including an audacious last minute free kick to win the game. :D

I've been searching for the off the bar play for a while actually - any link you can fetch? Game not being transmitted in Portugal so I couldn't see it here. I haven't been able to spot it on Youtube, either. Read about the play on Record live blog commentary.

The goal today is just absurd. Just look at the freakish speed he gets on the ball, from the position he's in, from the angle the ball is coming in, with the ball almost on top of his feet. Abnormal stuff, really.

Comments like this make my point on why I started to stay away. Pure ignorance.

Only one guy has ever won more than 5 Balon D or and it’s messi. Everyone else on that list is so far behind it’s not even funny. Ronaldo with his head and weak foot alone has as many career goals as anyone on that list. He owns almost every single record there is to own (along with Messi). In terms of the CL he has dominated that completions better than anyone ever and none have come remotely close including messi in this case.

Three Peat winner, 5 total wins, top scorer ever, top assister ever (Di Maria will take that soon) in the KO rounds of the most difficult competition in the world he has double the goals of the second guy behind him. In the semi finals he has double the goals and overall he has more big moments then I can remember.

His peak level of performance was only matched and at some points bested by Lionel Messi. Like you just said…this is facts.

yet you want to ignorantly say that for example….Thierry Henry was better ?

Not only is it idiotic to say but it’s downright disrespectful to one of the greatest to ever play this game. If you make a poll discussing who the 4 greatest players ever are OR if you just type the question on any search bar you will find an overwhelming majority have 4 consistent names there: Ronaldo,Messi, Maradona, and Pele.

Respond if you would like but I am not going to continue to entertain this and it’s the only reply I’m giving you.

“Not even top 10” This is exactly why I’ve been enjoying other spaces in the forum more then these stupid debates.
That is his opinion, just like you can have yours. Both opinions are not in the majority

Well Ronaldo only moved to semi-retirement league at the age of 38, unlike long list of other high profile star players who went there earlier:

Ronaldo - 38
Messi - 36
Benzema - 35
Busquets - 35
Henderson - 33
Mahrez - 32
Kante - 32
Koulibaly - 32
Mane - 31
Firmino - 31
Brozovic - 30
Savic - 28
Forfana - 28
Maxmini - 26
Neves - 26
Malcom - 26
Jota - 24

I think you shouldn’t go too harsh on him for that to avoid being double standard. Plus he has only playing there half season, not really make any sense to expect him to finish as top scorer there with only half of the game played, even though during his time there he has in fact scored more than anyone.

Poor Ronnie. He’ll need to play until past his 40 if he wants to hold the record for most goals in history. A forward playing past-40s. Seems a little desperate.

Platini is top 10 for me rather than Zidane, but Zidane is top 15 for sure.

Due to longevity I wouldn't put neither Ronaldinho, R9, or Zidane in a top 10.
I think R9's peak was too good to not put him top 10. What 10 players would you rate over him?

He already held that record since 2021. But he may need to keep scoring over next 2 years to ensure Messi won’t catch up his. But that’s also within the length of his current Saudi contract anyway. Nothing new there.

All time most goals in history (based on IFFHS):

1. Ronaldo - 841
2. Messi - 812
3. Pele - 762
4. Romario - 755
5. Puskas - 724
6. Bican - 722

You have players like Hamdallah who scored 49 goals in 36 games for the same club in 2018/19. He also scored 14 in the league since mid-january like Ronnie. Ronnie's half season down there is in no way a rare feat. You've had half decent players scoring at that rate or better in the Saudi Pro League every season the last 10-15 years.

Knowing Ronaldo & his ego, he wont call it a day until Messi decides to.. If hes still ahead thats when he'll prob make a decision, If hes behind he will literally keep playing until he goes past it. Thats just how he is.. All about personal glory.

Who knows, maybe they could both reach it. Currently Ronaldo is on 840, Messi on 812. They have 2 years and 2.5 years left in their contract. It’s hard to say now but there are chances they could both retire after their contract ends.
Messi must play in Argentina. It would be weird if he didn't. He should try to win the Copa Libertadores at least once.

Yeh but in 2 years time Ronaldo will be 40 whereas Messi will be 38, and both of them will be out of their contract. I remember Ronaldo said numerous time he will only want to play until 40 but not beyond it, and I just don't see them both playing beyond that. But if Messi wants to play until 40 sure Ronaldo will be playing until 42 to safeguard his record, as that to him is the only significant thing he has over Messi.

Imagine both Cristiano and Messi retiring only to Romario to unretire (word?) and tells the world that he kept training all the time waiting for them tl retire so he can make comeback and play until he's 80y old. He doesn't manage to score enough goals and Messi finishes as first. Could make s movie!
