 don’t think Chelsea are really setting any examples here but it’s actually pretty clever to create yet another extremely low bar for EtH to be measured against.
Like Benito said It was tongue in cheek, it’s why I said “dumbass logic”.

He’s not seriously arguing that point though because it would be an idiotic argument to just think money spent on transfer = success. Especially if you’ve got some idiots throwing money at players they shouldn’t be spending that much on.

I don’t think any sensible person would make that argument seriously either in support of or against anyone. Especially if the manager isn’t negotiating the fees.

It would be absolutely insane to criticise Pochettino for this. and Ten Hag
It’s a bit different when the £400m is spent mostly on players that the manager handpicked, and had even managed before. Ten Hag should absolutely be held accountable.

Real Madrid
How many Madrid managers had to rely on a Ighalo or Weghorst level striker option ?
Ancelotti. Real Madrid only have a single striker in the squad, Joselu. He's a 34-year-old journeyman who failed in the Premier League. They are on track to win the league and in the semis of the Champions League.

How many Madrid managers are stuck with chronically injured players like Jones or Martial?
Ancelotti and Zidane. Real Madrid spent over 100 million euros on Eden Hazard and he was perpetually injured. He contributed substantially less than either Martial or Jones and had an astronomically large salary. While he was at the club Real Madrid won two league titles and the Champions League. Then there's less-known players like Vallejo, Mariano.

You could throw Gareth Bale into the mix.

How many Madrid managers have had to spend a season relying on 2 of their 4 forwards who had to start who had zero experience in their league?
Probably Zidane, who had to rely on Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo back when they had almost no experience due to serious injuries to Hazard and Asensio in 19/20. He won the league.

How many Madrid managers had to make do with an “Anthony” level signing that seemed to mean they had zero other meaningful options and that was ok ?
Zidane and Ancelotti had Luka Jovic in the squad, a 'replacement' for Benzema who scored 3 goals in 3 seasons at the club.

How many Madrid managers are stuck with under performing players (like Pogba) 4 years after these players wanted to leave ?
Zidane had to deal with Bale and James.

But generally Real Madrid just has players who the club can't get rid of. For example, in the comeback against City in 2022, Jesus Vallejo and Dani Ceballos came in as late subs. Vallejo is a permacrock who's barely had a top level career and Ceballos was coming off two unremarkable seasons on loan to Arsenal and spent most of 21/22 out injured.

It's simply not the case that top clubs have these perfectly assembled squads with no holes or problems.

Curious to know if the more vocal Ten Hag supporters watched the CL semifinal PSG v Dortmund. @VP89 @BenitoSTARR @NLunited @glazed

There is a narrative that continues to be voiced by the Ten Hag supporters that this squad has too many injuries, the right players weren’t bought because Ten Hag doesn’t have control over transfers, and there are no problems with the tactics themselves, it’s the players lack of execution. Varane, Eriksen and Casemiro are too old, etc. Frankenstein squad and so forth.

Watching Dortmund go toe-to-toe with PSG was fascinating. Dortmund has retreads all over the pitch, including two who played for Ten Hag here last season, Sancho and Sabitzer. Mats Hummels at 35, and possibly the slowest human ever, playing a relatively high line, is dancing around the pitch, directing traffic, cleaning up messes. Fullkrug, the retread of retreads, scoring a goal and being a nuisance. Sancho roasting Mendes and constantly putting the defense under pressure with key passes and beating his man. Sabitzer covering huge areas. This squad at Dortmund is so much greater than the sum of its parts. Look at how they defend, compact. The way they break forward on the counterattack. When in possession, there is constant movement, options everywhere, crisp patterns of play.

They go dumpster diving for players every season, looking for value in youths or castoffs. They haven’t spent more than €30m on a player since 2016, and that year they spent 35m for Dembele!

And somehow, Edin Terzic has figured a way to play with structure, organization, control. That’s coaching. That is top notch pre game preparation.

It’s easy to see how our squad, with superior players, could play like Dortmund. Bruno plays the role of Brandt, Hojlund as FullKrug, Mainoo as Sabitzer, Casemiro as Can, Sancho as, well, Sancho. Maguire as Hummels.

So, I suppose you can continue to make excuses for Ten Hag. But instead of complaining, real managers/coaches like Terzic are putting out exciting teams that are making deep runs in major competitions with a fraction of the resources.

@hobbers @stevoc Would like to know if you watched the match and what your impressions were.
I watched it and it was great. Great performance from Dortmund, although they weren’t perfect.

Sancho looks like the Sancho we bought, or even better perhaps.

I don‘t think our squad can play with this much intensity for a whole game. It is what Ten Hag wants.

And to point out the obvious: Ten Hag beat Dortmund in CL twice in 2021: 7-1 on aggregate.

He's not talking like a manager that's facing the sack and it worries me. It's inconceivable that we're prepared to embark on another campaign with him at the helm after this shitshow season.

I hope it's him being delusional and not the club telling him that he's safe until next season.

The answer is glaringly simple, and I cannot wrap my head around why nobody seems to clock it.

He has not been sacked, and is likely not going to be sacked until the end of the season, because there is nobody who can sack him. We have no CEO, we have no DoF. Arnold has left, Murtough has left, and before they left they were lame ducks. The interim CEO is basically the Glazers' legal council guy and he is not in a position to make such a decision either.
Ten Hag was basically left alone to underperform a whole season because the board and executive level of our club has been in limbo since last year, first in anticipation of the ownership changes and now as a result of the ownership changes.
Posters go on how Ratcliffe/INEOS should sack him or why they haven't sacked him - Ratcliffe/INEOS are literally in no position to sack him yet. Their people have not assumed their positions yet, the CEO will start only in summer. That is the situation, it is not so hard to understand.
I am just going to quote myself (I know) because the discussion keeps on senselessly going.
Again: Ten Hag only has not been sacked (yet) because the positions who could and will actually sack him are not filled at the moment. No need to wonder/berate the club/speculate/fear/hope for a next season with him. Once Berrada and Ashworth have finished pullling up the weeds/watering the plants/mowing the lawn, first thing they will do is sack him. He's done but it cannot yet be executed - we have no executives.

I didn’t call you a glazer apologist. I said it’s “the same reductive logic as ETH supporters” Comment. Implying “you are a ETH fan therefore your opinions are flawed” is relatively shallow way of debating these things , like me saying “glazer apologist”.

What loyalty have I to ETH? Please explain my loyalty and provide recent quotes where I am extremely loyal to ETH?
Maybe I misunderstood you and if so, my bad. I don’t remember saying that ETH fans are inherently flawed.

I was joking about the Glazer apologist thing. I think if we did a poll on the Glazers it would be 100% out.

I think the reality is that both the Glazers and the structure is rot, the players are certainly not good enough and ETH has been subpar.

Sir Jim could sack him whenever. And even from the period of august right up until Feb, Arnold was still at the club and could have sacked him yet didn't bother to.

Really? Was that the team that had De Jong and DeLigt? The one that made the semis? Was Haaland on that squad? I genuinely don’t remember.

How would that work? Sir Jim has no position at the club. And the lame duck executives are not going to preempt the new appointees with such a decision.

No Frenkie and no De Ligt. Martinez had Haaland in his pocket.

90% of this season has basically been repeating our season opener vs Wolves with differing results, sometimes to a hilariously pathetic effect like losing a game we were winning in 90+10 or throwing away a 3 goal lead to a mid table championship side with 30mins to go. Good chance we finish the season with negative GD as well.

Sticking with a proven failure hoping for something different to happen is definition of insanity.

If INEOS were serious about their stated aim of winning trophies, firing ETH should be one of, if not the first things on their agenda whenever possible.

All this media talk about ETH working closely with Wilcox on next season’s planning makes me think he will be around for sometime. Not sure how I feel about that.

Well, if anything, this post just cleared my mind up on who I’d like to see us replace Ten Hag with.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
Some of the players aren’t playing for the club or the manager. How many managers have been thrown under the bus at this club? You can’t decide when to play good and bad when you’re getting a wage of over 150k a week. All our fans that pay there hard earned money weekly to watch them and they can’t even be bothered to show up and put in a decent performance. Dropping points to teams like Burnley who are getting relegated when our squad is probably worth 5x there’s is. The manger isn’t blameless like I’ve said numerous times before but how many times can we keep changing managers? If we’re happy to accept someone like potter or Southgate which are one of the more attainable managers then that will show how low we have become. Ratcliffe said when he came in we want the best in class in every department and unless we’re bringing in Guardiola/Klopp that ain’t happening.
Which players aren't playing for the club or the manager?

Rashford maybe, but everyone else out there looks like they are trying. They are just being set up to fail in a ridiculous system where every part of the team gets isolated. We are being deliberately set up to be incredibly open, allowing even Championship teams to rip us apart through the middle and constantly create decent opportunities. This is on the manager, not the players.

Mourinho and Rangnick are the only managers that the players really threw under the bus, and Mourinho completely deserved it as he threw them under it first and went out of his way to create a toxic dressing room.

Sometimes people don't seem to recognise that managers can fail without the players being at fault. Indeed a failing manager generally makes players look worse than what they really are.

Zidane and Ancellotti had Ronaldo, Modric and Kroos in their prime we have Scott Mctominay and Antony
That’s obviously not a fair equivalence. More accurate to say we have Bruno and Rashford in their prime (as disappointing as Rashford is).

That’s actually a good point and could be a valid reason to keep him. We have been so horrible this season that we could finish 5th on 60 points next year and that will be a big improvement and a reason to keep him for another year, in which we could get 2-3 more points and claim second consecutive EL spot.

Or we could be even worse next season which would give us an even better reason to keep him one more year beyond that because then we will certainly not get any worse anymore.

Neither lays a glove on any of the players I listed for Real and again just proves my point our "best" players are nowhere near the players those managers had available
ETH spend 400 million, so the expectation is that Antony and Onana are our best players, by a large margin, comparable to Real's superstars. Especially since ETH had worked with them in the past and he knew them well, and also these players were familiar with "his systems". No?

Oh, yes, also: How long would Real keep the manager if they lost 7-0 to Barca?

Well it couldn't get much worse and even a better season than this one wouldn't necessarily be a good one.

Weirdly you've taken this as a defense of EtH when really all I did was highlight the disparity between the players the managers had available, EtH should be doing better with the players he has but to pit him against those managers who had those teams is disingenuous

This man isn't going anywhere. He's just done an interview with Gary Neville on skysports. The club is clearly trying to change the perception of fans and the media of him. For better or worse, we're stuck with him.

Ye and only seen him rip defenders apart in the Dutch league. It’s very different over here. We have more physical defenders.

It has been a very bad season but I don’t get why people keep saying it’s the worse season ever. Have people got short memory. I’m pretty sure we finished 7th in 13/14 the season where giggs finishes the season managing us. Was that not a worse season? Or the season Rangnick took over and we finished 6th that year. That was dreadful. At least this season the games are more entertaining despite not winning all of them we’re seeing goals. Under Rangnick we couldn’t create anything and they was boring as anything.
