Matheus Cunha | Deal close with United (Sky Sports)

Here’s a highlights video to enjoy. It stretches back to his time in Germany so you can really get an idea of what he’s about. Don’t turn him into a system player, let him work his magic. This is a player that fans will love!

that chip was filthy!

Look at hit numbers where he’s most effective
Yeah, I doubt he's missing playing furthest forward looking at them. He could certainly play there when needed though. Wouldn't be surprised if he's more comfortable than Rashford was centrally and he filled in plenty over the years, to varying degrees of effectiveness.

Don't fancy him on the right much.

Guy had been one of my favourite prem players for a couple years. Used to legit be jealous of Arsenal seeing him score worldies. Could dribble, pass exquisite technique.

I damn near reached Nirvana when we got him. Just wish we’d done it like one or two years earlier.

He’s one of my favourite players
Yeah so do I, in signing him well before we did. Remember the flying volley he scored v Charlton, an absolute screamer, and followed him closely from there. Some of the play and goals in the last 2 seasons before he signed for us, some v Everton and Chelsea spring to mind, were amazing. Love RvP.

If he comes here then props to the guy. I’m sure he could have got a move to another big club who is actually doing well. Today Joao Pedro is linked with the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal, and I think they’re both very similar in terms of quality and what they bring to the team.

But for a while now they’ve been saying he wants us, CL or no CL. If that turns out to be true then it’s hopefully going to endear him to the supporters from the off. I’m sure his ability will do that anyway, and our supporters have always liked a player with a bit of fight about them too. I can’t see anything other than him being a really good buy.

This is an advantage of our system. We can now focus on players who many of the top teams can't utilize to their strengths. We always had an abundance of 10's and now we can have two. Granted that Wing backs are more rare and are key to the system.

Transfermarkt isn't a particularly reliable tool for determining a players position. They decide in advance where somebody will play and often get it wrong, and nobody is editing this stuff for accuracy. Whoscored isn't great either for the same reason.

The eye test by wolves fans will tell you that he isn’t great in the striker role

I'm saying that the stats he's provided from Transfermarkt aren't a reliable way of demonstrating where the player was actually playing anyway. They're frequently wrong. Transfermarkt isn't really geared up for any kind of accurate game analysis.
Edit - To expand on that I'm not convinced he was playing as a striker that often anyway. I think it's a misleading stat.

I remember exactly where I was when RVP was confirmed

You just knew we were winning the title when that was confirmed.

Haha same, I was working in my post Uni job at JD Sports  genuinely can't recall ever feeling so confident about a title win after the announcement. I already adored van Persie, that was amazing. Wonder if I'll feel like that signing anyone again!

Good times, lads

Ok, gotcha

Haven't read much of the most recent posts, so who of those who know his preferred positions that would fit Amorim's system? If it's off the right, would that impact Amad's place?

Off the left as one of the inside 10s. Been playing that at Wolves.

He's a bit of a throwback to the 90s or 00s, isn't he? A super talented but mercurial second striker who will create amazing moments out of nothing then stroll around the pitch for a while and fight with his manager after the match.

I say this largely in a good way. Football doesn't have enough of these kinds of players anymore.

Left #10, the same position he's been playing for Wolves this season.

Which probably means it's more like to impact Bruno than Amad (i.e. see Bruno continue to play in CM more often).

To follow up on that. Wolves play the same system as us and he has excelled in the left 10 position. This is a clear case of buying someone to fit a specific role within the team so even with our track record of strange decisions I really do not think there is any chance we are signing him to do anything other than what he is currently doing. I also think his desire to come here is precisely because he knows the role suits him and he does not want to make another move like the one to Madrid where he was played out of position and struggled, particularly in a World Cup year when he wants to be making his case to Ancelotti.

He isn't even remotely close to being the sort of goal threat Salah is though, they're completely different types of players.
That’s a bit pedantic. Obviously wish we could get someone with the same threat of Salah, but we can’t, even if they exist. Cunha would be our goalscoring wide player.

Should we be worried about the lack of workrate? One of the big criticisms of United over the last few years is that we tend to have players that don’t like running very much.

The thing is that players who can reliable beat a man are like gold dust, because in a system era they destabilise opposing systems. In our current team we have only one player who can do that, Amad. We have a few other very decent technical footballers, but none who can reliably dribble past anyone and create overloads and space in the way Amad can. Garnacho can theoretically do this but he has developed the game intelligence yet to apply it, he too often goes down blind alleys and is quite easily controlled. With Amad oppos can double up, and still keep the system intact. Cunha gives us that same ability on the other side, which suddenly makes defending against us much much harder. You can’t double up on both sides without seriously compromising your system.

What’s good about both players is that once they have created space by going past a player or two, they are not afraid to release the ball to better positioned team mates. I would expect these two to create lots of chances for each other, for the striker, and for a deep running midfielder like Bruno. Another key will be having a striker on the end of these chances who isn’t afraid to put them away.

I’m all for this signing. He’s a very exciting player. He’s also not afraid to hit one from distance, to great effect, which is hugely important against packed low blocks.
