Tricky one for me, this. Do we give our youngsters a run out or do we keep playing for best XI. As much as fixture pile-up doesn't help, not having enough games can't help either.

Coming to game itself, 4 at the back, don't need 5 for this game. Shaw and Rafael as full backs, Blind replacing Carrick who could do with a rest. I'm going to play Rooney because if he doesn't play for a couple of weeks, there is a chance he might lose 'form'. I'd also play Di Maria and replace him with Januzaj around 55 mins. Same with Pereira for Rooney and potentially save one sub for the inevitable injury to Luke Shaw.

I think this might be the opportunity to give Wayne and Michael a break, put them on the bench. They are both starting to look jaded, thanks LvG for telling players they will get tired playing all those games over Christmas. Wayne has had to work his socks off in that midfield and it might do him good to rest. He hasn't exactly been great, lets be honest, either.

It's not the result that's most important here, it's the performance. I want LVG to go full strength with the exception of possibly Valdes for DDG. Januzaj should feature at some point, but I'd like to see the strongest squad, showing some sort of progression, and hopefully ditch the 3 man defence in favour of a diamond.

Philosophy again --> Play safe against a lower side… Pass, pass, pass and pass again. Di Maria as a striker+ Mata as a defensive midfielder + Rooney left back in at half time

Give Rooney a rest and maybe shove Januzaj in there somewhere, perhaps for Herrera.

Difficult game to make selections for; we need to win the FA Cup or at least go far, so not to many players like Valdes,McNair,Blackett, Rafael, Shaw, Anderson, Herrera, Januzaj,Perreira,Wilson,Lingard can start or they jepordise our likelihood of progressing plus a repeat of MK Don would be a disaster.
We can expect either 352/442; don't expect LVG to breakaway from it.

I just don't get how stubborn van gaal is going to play Januzaj when we do not have a system of support wingers, while we also have far to many no.10's.
I also would like Herrera to play but that would mean starting ahead of Rooney,Fellaini,Blind, Di Maria and Mata. I don't think Van Gaal is capable of being fair towards Ander Herrera.
I want Falcao to get a run of games but is that possible with Wilson likely to get rewarded while LVG continues with his - Di Maria - up front - insanity.

Maybe this game against minnows in a high priority tournament will be a good indication of how stubborn/fleixble Louis will be with the players he has marginalised for no apparent reason but because they do no fulfill the requirements of the godawful 3-5-2.
If Januzaj, Herrera,Shaw, Rafael,Rooney, Di Maria, Falcao all start in their correct positions, then no matter the result, I would gain shedloads of confidence from LVG's ability to be fair and flexible.

    My ideal selection would be;
    Valdes
    Rafael Smalling Rojo Shaw
    Herrera -- Blind
    Rooney
    Di Maria Falcao Januzaj

    --------Valdes

    Rafael Smalling Rojo Shaw

    ---Herrera Blind Fellaini

    ---Wilson Falcao Januzaj

Rest Rooney, Carrick. Have Mata and Di Maria on bench if needed.
We must surely make easier work of this than we did Yeovil.
Hopefully the stubborn gaffer will play a formation that our players are comfortable with.

easy 0-3 or if its Rooney in midfield, Di Maria upfront etc then another tedious struggle.

I agree with several of y'all that this would be a good one for Fellaini and Herrera.

Would love to see a shot at 4-3-3.

If we play with that formation we should be fine. If he goes in scared we will struggle.

Think Rafael and van Persie could be back for this game, but I'd probably put them on the bench with the kids and see how the game goes first.

    Valdes
    Valencia Smalling Rojo Shaw
    Carrick
    Fellaini Di Maria
    Rooney
    Falcao Wilson

Something like that is what I hope and expect to see.

I wonder what 'WOW' factor Valdes will have about making his United debut against Cambridge City !

I would love that as well. It is all depending on Shaw/Rafael though isn't it. If they aren't ready then he will probably go 3 at the back, Go overboard on defence in the midfield with Blind/Carrick/Fellaini. You would think we were competing against Cambridge University in a quiz rather than Cambridge United at football.

More than anything else I want to see Januzaz get a full game in an attacking position. He seemed depressed from what Fellaini said about going to him after scoring his goal.

Not bothered about the up or formation once Valdez, Rafael, Shaw, Herrera, Januzaj and Wilson start.

Considering the team LVG went with against Yeovil I'm going to go with

    --------------De Gea--------------
    ---McNair---Smalling---Blind---
    Valencia----------------------Rojo
    ---Fellaini---Fletcher---Rooney---
    --------------Di Maria--------------
    ---------------Wilson---------------

Subs: Valdes, Blackett, Evans, Jones, Herrera, Januzaj, Mata

    So yes 3-5-2

Would be nice to see a change and we play 4231.

    Valencia Jones Rojo Shaw/blind
    _______Carrick Herrera____
    Januzaj Rooney di Maria
    _________wilson______

It's not what I really expect to see. It's what I would like to see. Fully expect 3 center backs and Rooney in midfield. We should win no matter who starts in my opinion.

    We'd be slaughtered.

Paxman: "Who is the current head of state in China?"
    *Buzz* "Rooney, Manchester"
Rooney: "Errrm, it's 'da fat bloke, errm, Buddha!"

LvG will not play this like a reserve match, but I still believe that he will see this game as an opportunity to play some players he has not been starting, like:
    Rafael, Shaw, Adnan, Herrera.
I am hoping to see one out of Rvp or Falcao start instead of Wilson.
the line-up that I will love to see:

    -------------------Valdes------------------------
    rafael-----Smalling-------Jones---------Shaw--
    -----------Herrera------Blind-------------------
    Di Maria-----------Rooney-------Adnan---------
    ----------------Rvp/Falcao
