This would have been a rather different fixture 10 years ago
10 years ago Milan were knocked out of the CL by Redknapp’s Spurs. I think they were on the decline even then, even if they did win a scudetto. I don’t think they had much competition. Weren’t Juventus in disarray then?

Van Bommel and Cassano were key players to that Scudetto but they were cuptied in Europe.
Allegri blew the 1st leg by using Thiago Silva and Seedorf out of position.
He fixed the mistakes for the 2nd leg but Robinho and Zlatan took turns missing sitters.

I think the current Milan side is better than that one though. At least before all these injuries ruined our Scudetto chances.

How do AC Milan play? Do they play a high line or do they sit back?
Normally very high line. The type of teams you love to face.
But injuries has forced Pioli to go with a more defensive approach lately.

Looking forward to this. Yes it's just the Europa league but it's United vs Milan, it'll always be a bigger game.

    Henderson
    Wan Bissaka Bailly Maguire Telles
    Matic Fred
    James Bruno Martial
    Greenwood

Two biggest teams left in the competition by a mile, should have been the final. Still have to win though.

    Dean
    AWB Bailly Maguire Shaw
    Fred Matic
    Greenwood Bruno Rashford
    Martial

Lindelof’s beginning to grow on me, but he seemingly can’t play twice a week due to his back. Get Matic in for McT to attempt to dictate the tempo of the game as we’ll need control in this one, and Martial simply deserves to play. He missed a sitter but his general performance last night gives a lot of cause for optimism.

    2-0 United.

I expect maybe two enforced changes and one or two others as well.

    Henderson
    Wan-Bissaka Bailly Maguire Telles
    McTominay Fred
    Greenwood Bruno James
    Martial

This could be the start of a long run in the side for Henderson. After a couple of games already, if Dave isn't back at the weekend... Dean will probably play a minimum of six in a row. If he does well, it will be hard for Ole to automatically out Dave back in goal.

Even if it's just a twisted ankle, Rashford shouldn't be involved at all. Shaw looked noticeably uncomfortable in the derby despite playing really well, so I'd rather he was given a break too. Greenwood & Telles are the only replacements we should consider.

Bailly, Matic and maybe van de Beek could be considered to start. Bailly is for me the most likely, as with Lindelof managing the back injury, it's less likely he plays the cup games anyway. I think McFred will start, but wouldn't be opposed to Matic or Donny playing instead of one of them.

Hope we can win the home leg, I do think it'll be a tight game. Would be happy with a 1 or 2-0 win, don't concede an away goal and play on the counter in Italy.

Where's this arrogance coming from? They are 2nd in serie a and are having a decent season. They may not be the old ac milan but neither are we the old Manchester United. This will be a tough game and a win will be huge.
Serie A isn’t a good a league. The depth in the league isn’t there with a lot of really poor sides making up the numbers. Lazio similarly hauled a lot of points last season.

Milan have had some injury problems and have not been playing well for a while. According to flashscore Mandzukic, Ibra, Rebic, Theo and Hakan are all injured right now. Dalot might be playing this game. They do not have the same quality in Serie A anymore, and though I do not want to underestimate Milan, I think they are far too out of form and injury ridden to be a big problem. Press them to make mistakes and be patient, then there will be opportunities enough to score a couple of goals.

Be try much looking forward to this. Milan remain one of my favourite teams in Europe. Good to see them having a good Serie A campaign and hopefully we can see them back in the CL next season as it’s been far too long.

Think this will be how we set up:

    Henderson

    AWB Bailly Maguire Telles

    McTominay Matic

    Greenwood Bruno James

    Cavani (if fit)/Martial

This is the kind of games we win big. Those 'good but not that good' teams.

Think Martial is nailed on to start this one regardless. Ole has been trying to play him into form all season and finally against city he delivered so he will want him to carry that on.

I used to write I wouldn't be watching Europa League, but playing Milan is something what makes such a weird and not needed competition interesting.

I still think it's better not to play in it, but when it's Milan... it's more of a European trophy than it was before.

I'd much rather be playing the likes of Molde at this stage. Save the tougher opponents for the later rounds when we can't avoid an easier draw.

I don't get why many only seem to want to draw 'big' opponents in the Europa League. Or why the likes of Molde wouldn't seem a 'proper' tie. It's only like drawing a non-PL club in the domestic cup competitions. And I'd much rather keep doing that than be drawn against strong PL opposition every round just so it feels like a 'proper' (i.e. bloody tough) opponent.
Look at it this way: if they knock us out now, we can focus on the other competitions and our players will have a little more rest.

If we go through, we might get an easier quarter-final. Speaking of Molde: they're playing Granada - getting the winner of that tie would be a very decent draw for a European quarter-final.

Knowing our luck it'll be a run like this from now on to the final:

    Milan - Roma/Shakhtar - Arsenal - Spurs

Getting a Jose-led Spurs in the final is the nightmare scenario. Pure AIDS.

Would be really helpful to win this one as next week’s schedule is brutal (Thursday Milan away, Sunday Leicester away).
Would also be good to finally have Cavani and Pogba back at least for next week’s games.

He's injuried and will miss both games.

Today we were missing Ibra, Rebic, Theo Hernandez, Calhanoglu, Bennacer and Mandzukic.. I think only Theo and Rebic will be available for the 1st leg while the other three should be ready for the return leg..
Likely starting XI based on current injuries?

    Donnarumma
    Calabria — Tomori — Romagnoli — Theo(?)
    Tonali(?) — Kessie
    Rebic — Saelemaekers — Diaz/Castillejo
    R. Leao

Something like that? Back 5 looks good. Maybe lack of seasoned attackers up top but enough to still cause concern, I guess.

Dalot can play but Rebic and Zlatan are out who are arguably 2 of their best players

For all of Zlatan's form this season, they've ironically not been heavily relying on him for goals in games like for example Ronaldo or Haaland this season.

He's chipped in but is largely rotated. So I don't think it will be a huge blow with him being out, but he will be missed.

Really looking forward to this one! Yesterday’s result should put a spring back in the players step and I think we’ll win by two goals in the first leg. Rashford will be a miss but Greenwood can step in and James is showing some form to start again. Not sure if Cavani is back for this.

According to LaGazzettadelloSport only Theo should be fully fit (Tonali and Rebic will start on the bench) so I guess:
    Donnarumma
    Calabria - Tomori/Romagnoli - Kjaer - Theo Hernandez
    Meitè - Kessiè
    Castillejo Brahim Diaz Saelemakers
    Rafael Leao
Our "back 5" is the best possible but the absences of Bennacer (DLP), Calhanoglu (Trequartista), Rebic (our best winger), Ibrahimovic and Mandzukic will hurt us big time that's why I expect a very defensive game from Milan (maybe taking advantage of Leao and Diaz pace to create some dangerous counter-attacks)

Everyone but Ibrahimovic will be available for the second leg though

    Thanks for that!

So it sounds like we'll need to be in a pretty good position heading to Milan. I think this tie is going to really surprise people - reckon it'll be a bit of a classic.

Arguably, this is the most evenly matched both sides have been in my memory. Can only recall our clashes from 06/07 onwards, but I think we're pretty evenly matched if this season is anything to go by.

Milan have always been my favourite Italian club, really hoping they can win the league this season but reckon both Inter and Juve will start to break ahead as the season goes on. Perhaps it's in everyone's best interest if Utd win this

Not many options in attack for this game. If its James - Martial - Greenwood to start, Amad should get some game time as Cavani, Rashford and Mata are all out are they not?

The squad should be riding the wave of yesterdays performance and I'd love us to put the tie to bed in the first leg ala sociedad

It's just my opinion based on many factors: opponents and their style, how much important is the competition, which is our next league match (-> big match against Napoli in this case) etc. etc.
For similar reasons, according to most of the people here, the best Premier League LB will be benched..
    We'll see

Expecting Martial to turn in a top performance in this tie. He's got a point to prove with Ibra.

I am not a lukaku fan or anything but calling him average again shows our arrogance and ignorance. He is a decent striker, yes playing in serie a helps him but that doesn't make one average. He did score 28 goals in all competition for us in his first season here.

I still think this is a tough tie and we need to play well if we are to knock them out.
He scored 25% more in his first season at Inter than he ever did for us, and is on course for more than that this season. 25% is probably a pretty good figure for the difference between the leagues.

Milan is a great name to play against but they are not very good. European ties can go any direction but we should be winning this comfortably.

These were the lineups last time we played them. How the mighty have fallen :(

    Van Der Sar
    Neville Vidic Ferdinand Evra
    Scholes Fletcher
    Valencia Park Nani
    Rooney

    Huntelaar Borriello
    Ronaldinho
    Flamini Pirlo Ambrosini
    Jankulovski Bonera Silva Abate
    Abbiati

Though it did occur to me we have never played each other at our best. 2007 was the closest we came.

Every time we I see Milan I remember Crespo knocked us out of the CL with a shitty performance. At least in 2007 when they knocked us out it was a good performance by them and specially Kaka.

    Team should be...

    -----------------Henderson-----------------
    AWB----Bailly----Maguire----Telles
    ----McTominay----Matic----
    Greenwood--Bruno--James
    -------------------Martial-------------------

Subs: Grant, Tuanzebe, Lindelof, Shaw, Williams, Fred, Rashford, Amad, Shoretire

Could really do with our bit part players getting back to fitness (VDB and Mata)
We´re running short of options, so that´ll be it.
