Pretty decent half, though I felt we dropped back after the second.

James was good, Fred and McT playing very well. Martial needs to get involved more. I hope he scores a couple, he’s in my fantasy team ffs.

Defence has looked comfortable, especially Maguire. But we look vulnerable at set pieces.

I disagree. Moving is good, intensity is good, pressing is good. We could be better, but we are looking very dangerous while giving very little away.
Intensity is good and pressing is good when we do it but we're sitting back a little too much.

And we're not creating much. That's not a big deal at 2-0 but it would be nice if we created as many chances as against Partizan.

Hopefully, we'll have more space in the second half, what with three out of their back four already on a yellow.

We should avoid giving away set pieces as a rule tbh. We've been terrible at defending them for a few years.

This is a typical Martial performance really, I'm not sure what people are expecting. Is this a case once again of a player being out injured and people forgetting what he's actually like.

We'd benefit a lot from a proper striker. Martial is only adequate there in truth.
This same statement again? What is so hard to understand that anyone playing striker for us will suffer because of little to no service?

pereira doesnt linkup with anyone ever. I think he's just been okay so far. needs to be more of a playmaker rather than a shoot on sight tyoe of player. He also never picks a pass.
Yes. He has a decent shot but he seems to be missing the vision to assist a goal. Still a better option than Lingard (doesnt assist but also doesnt score) or Mata. Cant wait for the moment Pereira is replaced though

Not bad at all. The goals weren't exactly classics but it's not too often I've been as satisfied as this with us 2 up at half time this season. Both goals had a bit of luck, and tbh I was a little infuriated at Perreira in the build to the first. He got lucky that the ball fell to Martial.

McTominay, Rashford and even Fred have looked bright. Hope for a bit lore in the second half.

Martial would look better with Pogba feeding him, because Andreas doesn't do enough creative wise. James has crossed it in a few times nicely, but Martial hasn't really gotten close to any of them.

It wasn't so long ago that we couldn't score more than 1 whoever it was against, be it Rochdale or some lowly team in the league.
So it's at least something we've now seen 3 v Norwich and Partizan and 2 so far today.
    Small mercies!

Didn't think I'd see people complaining at HT.. but matchday threads are a special place.. Never miss a chance for a moan.

Happy we're up but I don't like the game plan of sitting back on the counter at home to Brighton. Ole spoke a lot about pressing but this is Jose football tbh.

Partly because hes been hiding all game. Our midfield is hardly stellar, but they have not been the problem today
Hiding? have you been watching the game? He's done a lot to try to get on the ball but he's been let down by our midfield. He's tried to make runs, he's come short, he's gone to the side yet he wasn't getting any balls to him because our midfield pathetically fail to bring the ball forward. They can't even manage simple few yards pass in between when a forward is open and asking for the ball.

I wouldn't use the word hiding for a player that has been trying to get on the ball to no avail because the midfield can't make a proper forward pass.

Martial playing as a 9 will mostly be involved less than the wingers. Don't want him wandering wide to get on the ball, I'd rather he stay central and then he can link play in and around the box.

We are still not good enough thats the problem. No domination (we even had less possession) and no working system that creates many proper chances

Martial needs to show for the ball. They can’t feed him when he hides behind defenders and if they play a ball for him to run onto, he’ll just stand and stare at it. We know what he can do but he’s not arsed today.

Most of the team look motivated enough, albeit against poor opposition but it’s looking a bit better. Passing could do with sharpening up a bit.

Brighton makes a double substitution at half time. Murray and March get on the pitch

But martial has been present on both crosses. The second one martial came near and if James had raised his head he would have noticed this.

He was excellent on Thursday though. Mostly because he dropped a little back when Rashford and Greenwood threatened the room behind their defenders. Either that or he played on the shoulder of their CB and was looking to sneak in behind

There is plenty of room for him, hes just not finding it

Pretty much, difference between a decent winger and a very good one, he lifts his head and picks Martial and its a goal

exactly. People are gonna complain about his involvement yet they don't stop to think why he isn't involved much. The midfield can't bring the ball forward and as a striker you are left striving.
McT, James and Fred are all having very good games but if the forwards don't show themselves there's not a lot to pass to.

There is a blossoming partnership developing between Fred and Mctominay. They were dominant in that first half and largely the reason we looked so comfortable.

So reading the comments here, the best players for United have been McT, Fred and James, but at the same time Rashford and Martial cannot be blamed for lack of participation because the midfield are too shit to get them the ball.

    Never change, caf.
