I don't want Mata to play. Rashford and Martial are more potent, hungry and effective.

I just don't rate Mata that highly people. Sorry. Nice guy, decent squad player, but I'm not sure what we were thinking paying best part of £40m for him (when prices were not as crazy as they clearly are now..!).Mata plays comfortable attacking football, but doesn't play like a winner, a champion.

I bet the forwards are licking their lips for this one. 4-0 would be conservative, I think they'll be aiming for six at least.
After our long trip and only a days rest, not so sure we'll have the gas for it.

    -------------De Gea------------
    Valencia-Bailly-Lindelof-Young
    ---------Herrera--Carrick-------
    ---------------Mata-------------
    Mkhitaryan------------Rashford
    --------------Lukaku------------

Could maybe see Jose giving Lindelof a league game to ease him in. Nice and comfy home game against Palace is about the best chance he'll get. Matic could also use a rest, and playing 2 defensive midfielders against Palace would be overkill I think.
Not just to ease him, we would surely need a ball playing centerback if Crystal Palace park the bus.

What I don't agree is the Mata-Mkhitaryan switch, I think they'll keep the same functions, namely Mata free to drift inside from the right.

This Palace-team could quite possibly be the most under-performing side in P.L history. How it's possible that a team like that have 0-0-6 and 0-13 which is the worst start by any team in P.L history...is beyond me.

In fairness - they have been really unlucky in a few of those matches. But I have a feeling - if we get an early goal, their heads will drop...again

I'd play Smalling over Lindelof mainly because they have Benteke. So we need someone strong in the air to deal with him. Mata will also probably play as he is well rested. Young to start as LB.
Benteke's apparently out of it. Sept 23: "We think it's a form of ligament damage, but not sure how bad. He'll have a scan tomorrow."

My guess is Mourinho is already more worried about the subs for the 3-3-4 formation he's going to use later in the game if we don't break Crystal Palace's bus early. Fellaini recovered, even if just on the bench, would come handy.

We should be beating these boys quite comfortably tbh. Sakho will be a bit of a test for Lukaku physically, especially on crosses.

That's even better for us! I guess any defender can play then. I still expect Jose to pick Smalling.

Unless he feels Crystal Palace are a general aerial threat or he counts on Smalling's attacking headers, like the Europa League final, it would make no sense to start him at home against a sitting back team. Blind or Lindelöf could do a better job, specially distributing play. Anyhow, I'm still expecting Jones to recover.

Yeah, I get your point. I would also like to see Lindelof start. Just not sure if Jose thinks he is ready for the PL. Anyway, whoever starts we should be winning this game. No excuses.

This is not going to be an easy ride at all IMO, Palace desperate for a positive result, with a new coach I think they are going to play their best game vs us I'd be very very happy with 1-0 just get a win.

Play both Rashford and Martial (if fit) and give Matic a rest. We really shouldn't need him for this game.

With Benteke, Wickham, and Zaha, out for Palace I cannot see where the goals will come from them. Fosu has to sit out this one also. 4-0 again.

Actually, something more on these desperate 2-1-4-3 lines:
    de Gea
    Bailly–Lindelöf
    Matić
    Valencia–Lingard–Fellaini–Young
    Rashford–Lukaku–Martial

This should be a Chamberlain for sure. Even with our injuries.

Palace are missing Benteke as well, so they are the definition of toothless. Let's stuff them with goals.

    Based on this:

    League standings and form guide

    2. Manchester United : WWDWW

    20. Crystal Palace : LLLLL

We should be looking to score more than 4 goals. This team is there for the taking and deserves to be spanked.

We don't need a big win this weekend but it'd be more than welcome. With the potential of City dropping points and also not improving their goal difference, it'd be great to catch up with them in that sense and possibly open up a gap at the top before the international break.

Fellaini is a huge doubt and what the feck is Lingard doing in midfield?

Can only see a comfortable win for United. Palace are better than their record suggests but not good enough to get anything at your place.
Don't think Benteke will be much of a loss for them as he's lacking in confidence but the pace of Townshend and Loftus Cheek may get them a consolation goal.

If only you had read the context before… This was just me indulging in imagining the formation for breaking the Crystal Palace bus later in the game, if needed. So, by then, Lingard would be just outside their area, not midfield. Mourinho has hope Fellaini can recover, by the way.

That's what a big squad is for, and you hardly spent much energy rolling over the Russkis, not to mention first class travel is probably more comfortable than my bed. It should be a whitewash, one upmanship over City who got just the 5.

Perhaps, but Mourinho doesn't seem to think that way, and was complaining about having to do the press conference at night and the game being on Saturday already. And possible seven of the starters will have to start again.

Palace surprised me by having a good go for about 30 minutes last week and could have grabbed a goal
Once they started sitting back and timewasting they started to leak goals.

This is a perfect match to give Lindelof some PL minutes. Partner him with Bailly or Smalling.
If we need to rest Matic, which I think we do, Herrera can play DM while Mata - Mkhitaryan play attacking.

    DDG
    Valencia - Bailly/Smalling - Lindelof - Young/Shaw
    Herrera
    Mata Mhkitaryan
    Lingard Martial Rashford

Lukaku, Shaw, Fellaini off the bench if fit.

I take a dull 1-0. Palace are bound to be more organised defensively at some point...

At Chelsea he played as a 10 and was an assist machine.

Yeah don't know where all his assist went when we signed him. He is scoring more but he is rarely assisting. This season he created nothing and he is passenger in games.

If I don't see Martial on that team sheet on Saturday I hope Woy spits in Jose's post game glass of wine.

Ah well, he'd moan if he won the lottery cos he'd have to pick up the cheque - I wouldn't pay much mind to his whinges. Your B team should be way too strong for Palace with zero confidence and Woy in charge. Saying that, this is the kind of game you usually see a team pull off a shock result :D. Can't see it personally, I bet all teams playing them now don't want to be the first to concede a goal to them never mind lose/draw.

I think if Martial and Matic picked up knocks best to rest them, I think Carrick can do a job vs Palaces CMs.
