The lack of composure and basic technique to keep the ball form several of our players is quite appalling

Who do you change then? Injuries and played mid week away, The midfield picks itself, The forward line unfortunately picks itself.

Given the lack of quality, the game is carrying out for a Mata to get his foot on the ball and slow it down.
Greenwood on for Martial Mata for Fred and Diallo for James

I know injuries are a big factor this time around, but we really need a top quality DM instead of Matic, and another centre back with pace, then we don't have to play two holding midfielders so often.

Breaking down teams like this, you need as many players as possible with technique and vision, all capable of one touch flicks and passes to move the ball quickly. Playing two holding midfielders, and decent but not dynamic full backs, means we have one or two less players on attacks capable of doing that than the likes of City and makes us much easier to defend against without defenders chasing shadows and getting dragged out of positions.

Newcastle with 4 shots on target to our 2. We seriously need a kick up the arse at half time.

Newcastle edged that half? Certainly won the midfield battle and looked more enterprising going forward. We’ve still had some moments of pressure but looks as clueless as ever in breaking them down and hilariously bad at dealing with a high press. Shaw has done okay apart from that everyone has been poor.

No clue what is stopping Amad to play. Physically he seemed pretty ok, skill is there, then why not try out a specialist winger for a change?
    Totally agreed
Wtf is James doing in this match, keep him for clueless European teams (and Leeds), we need someone who can work in tight spaces

Anything new? Still rely on individual brilliance to create chances and we still shit at defending set pieces. Rinse and repeat.

Martial should offer to terminate his contract. Watching him makes my blood boil. Lukaku's touch combined with Lingard's confidence. James is atleast trying but it's completely the wrong game for him. Fred's been atrocious and Matic playing like it's his testimonial. Only bright spark is Rashford finding his old self and Luke Shaw being great yet again.

It doesn't matter who we put on the right wing, 90% of balls will goto rashford anyway. We could play prime Ronaldo there and they'd still pass to rashford.

    Greenwood > Martial

That's honestly the only thing I can see us doing before the 80th minute or so.

Our midfield is really poor and our CBs have always got a few to give away at any given moment.

Only AWB and DDG can hold their head up after that.

Typical performance from us lately. Very sloppy giving the ball away constantly, look devoid of ideas going forward and rely on a bit of individual brilliance to bail us out.

Am I the only one who thinks Maguire or Lindelof or De Gea could not do much about the brilliant goal?

Agree that our game has been suspect, and our set piece defense is awful in itself, but for the actual goal itself, I am not sure I would like to blame anyone in particular.

    James' first half:
Receive the ball on the wing, run to the byline, turn around, run back to where he received the ball. Pass it backwards.

Mason needs to get in asap.
He can't beat players without knocking it past them and it was obvious Newcastle wouldn't let him do that.

He and martial shocked be hooked now.

James has pace but he has no confidence in his dribbling ability whatsoever. Roll the dice and give Diallo a go.

Maguire was our only defender actually trying to get something on the ball and is getting criticised?
The people blaming maguire dont have a clue about football, ita just an agenda for some.

No one anywhere near the goalscorer at any point, its poor defensively all round.
...but as a centre half facing your own goal that is all you can do to head ball away.

Guarantee there’ll be calls for James to come off for Amad

Yet Ole has been criticised for playing James in a game where there’s no space for James to run in to. Yet what is Amad going to do if he comes on......try to run into space that isn’t there and he’ll get praise for it because he is the CAF’s new love child.

For what it’s worth I think James has been one of our best players in the first half, playing positive and wanting to go forward yet there’s no attackers in the box for him to cross the ball to

A proactive coach who actually sees how shite we've been this half would make a sub to to change things up, like Greenwood for James.

    Not happening with Ole.

Very predictable pattern. Watching City play football earlier then watching us is like night and day. Very little from us seems to be deliberate. It’s all percentage football, and tbh - that has been the case with the club since Fergie. The PL is evolving massively in order to extract more from the collective and we have been simply trying to bridge that gap with spending. Our midfield is so far from being good enough, but ultimately - the players just seem to be left to make it up on their own under the guise of ‘we just send them out there and tell them to express themselves’. The time has come to do better, and be more deliberate than that.

I honestly didn’t have the same feeling going into this game as I did the Sheffield United and West Brom games, thought it would be a much better performance after the 4-0 win.

Unfortunately it’s been quite lethargic and slow, need a bit of a kick up the arse here, come on boys.

Piece of brilliance from Rashford, other than that we've not tested their gk. Absolute shite. Bet someone will point out that we had 56% possession or something and 'dominated', despite having feck all to show for that supposed dominance. Martial playing against us, but will probably make it to the 80th minute again.

Just the same shite over and over again with a good game sprinkled in between when a team manages to succeed in playing with the one style of football that we're really good against, ie a high line.

Got to get the ball out of defence quicker (1) we're sh!t when pressed (heart attack time when De Gea or Maguire have the ball at feet... usually standing 5 feet from each other?) and (2) two passes and we're past 4, 5 players.

Need Matic to move forward more with the ball instead of the sideways rubbish (he does it sometimes, pitch opens up).

And sub Martial. How many dodgy photos of Ole can he still have??!! Looks like he'd rather be anywhere else in the world.

Might as well put Tuanzebe on. Go 5 at the back and push FBs up towards Rashford and James

Well Greenwood has been by far our best attacker recently so why isn’t he playing? Isn’t this what we bought Diallo for. Seems like Ole just has constant excuses.

Hopefully that was the standard United first half performance, meaning we'll magically come to life in the second half.

    Hopefully.
