thinking of the players we have available really makes you think how much squad improvements we need this summer.

Second string for some positions is simply not acceptable.
We have said this virtually every single year.

I'd go with this but Mata on the right. Lingard never gets up to much on the right. Blind and Carrick deep could help cut off West Brom counter attacks and give us 5 men sitting deep even when one fullback is caught upfield. The Double pivot worked for us with Scholes-Carrick for years and while Blind is no Scholes, you could see one of them managing a ball over the top for Rashford's pace, or opening up a lane for Rojo or Bailly to carry the ball deep into West Brom's half. Might do enough for a 2-1 win, and we get more height to defend set pieces.
That's a must. I watched them tear Arsenal through set pieces.

Time to play kids. Tuanzebe, TFM, Shaw and Rashford should get opportunities here.
Doubt those two will play tbh. Maybe Fosu-Mensah if we're really lacking in defensive options come Saturday, but West Brom won't be a pushover. They're a solid, physical team and I don't see Mourinho throwing them in the deep end when they've barely played this season.

If TFM can't even get a game when Pogba, Herrera and Fellaini are out, he must surely be tempted to move elsewhere.

Tuanzebe should at least the on the bench with Bailly and Rojo starting.

I thought Fellaini was likely to recover? If he does, it'll most likely be him and Carrick in the centre of the park, no?

The United boss has also confirmed central defenders Chris Smalling and Phil Jones sustained injuries while away on duty with England. Paul Pogba played no part in the international break with France after straining his hamstring in the Reds' win over FC Rostov on 16 March.

"So we lose four players (incl. Zlatan & Herrera) and I think Paul Pogba is also out," said Mourinho. "So we lose five."

A challenging run-in ahead, and it most definitely starts on Saturday. I have much more confidence in the Everton match than this one. Think it’ll be:

    DDG

    Bailly—Blind—Rojo
    Valencia—————————Young
    Carrick—Fellaini
    Mkhitaryan————Lingard
    Rashford
Mourinho didn’t mention Rooney or Fellaini as injured players, so there’s a chance Rooney starts as well.

On the 20th of October 2014, we drew 2-2 away to West Brom.

Now, 150 games on, we meet again. We have not drawn a single game 2-2 since that day. I know it sounds like a weird thing to be fascinated by, but that is fecking insane. How on Earth have we not drawn 2-2 in that long? And nobody even talks about it! It's madness.

I fear it's written in the stars.

LvG managed us for two seasons. The matches rarely had 4 shots on goal total. There’s your answer.

Sick of the Phil Jones saga now. Strings 4 games together and looks decent then back to being Injured. It's as predictable as the scouse boom bust cycle.

Playing a mid table team at OT. A draw is inevitable.
I actually fancy WBA for this. We are shocking at at defending set pieces and have been for as long as I can remember and they have quite a reputation for being good at them. I'd put money on them scoring from a Corner/Fkick.

We've conceded the least goals from set pieces in the entire league this season, but we're missing a lot of our usual height and physical presence for this match so could be an issue.

Hopefully. Before the international break I thought 2 key players for WBA set pieces would be Fellaini and Smalling. Typical if they're both injured.
Indeed. Zlatan, Fellaini and Smalling out would mean trouble. If Felli plays, I think it’s best for him to not mark anyone, but just start from the spot and go win the headers. McAuley/Evans could easily draw Fellaini out of the action and exploit Rojo’s and Bailly’s weaknesses.

Similarly, on the 19th May 2013 we drew 5-5 with West Brom. 1413 days and 208 games later and we've not drawn a single game 5-5. :nervous:

The odds of getting a 5-5 scoreline, though, are next to impossible. 2-2 is far more probable.

    Ok so team could be...

    ------------De Gea------------
    -----Bailly---Rojo---Blind-----
    Young--Carrick--Mensah--Darmian
    --Mata----Rashford----Lingard--

Though I'll be honest I can't see TFM starting under any circumstance so who knows who plays midfield with Carrick

Did Rojo go away with Argentina as I would suspect if Valencia is missing he would be also which would then suggest back to a back 4

In that formation, I suppose Rojo would be the central center-back, while Blind would be the left one. But I still have a hard time imagining Mourinho could go for that formation, with Jones and Smalling out and even if we are still without Ibrahimović. I think Mata, despite being short, should play.

Probably right about Rojo/Blind. We've played that formation recently, and now if ever we need some extra care at the back, so I'm quite sure it'll be 3 CBs again.

Maybe you're right regarding the formation, it could be a way to put a fresher Young on the left, while allowing Valencia on the right to have less ground to cover.

On the other hand, it's a pity we're leaving both Mata and Martial on the bench, although I'm not sure the fact they're more rested and been training with the team won't give them a big chance to start instead of Mkhitaryan and Lingard, respectively.
