Been looking at our Uefa coefficient points and if we manage to qualify for the champions league next season by winning the EL it looks like we would get into pot 2. If the league positions stay as they are I think it looks something like this

1. Madrid, Chelsea, Bayern, Juventus, Benfica, Monaco, Spartak Moscow, Shakhtar Donetsk
2. Barca, Atletico, PSG, Dortmund, Sevilla, Man City, Porto, United
3. Napoli, Zenit, Spurs, Basel, Dynamo, Ajax, Villareal, Anderlecht
4. Liverpool

Wow how far we have fallen.
So if we win the Europa, we might play Spurs in the group stage? That would be interesting.
On a side-note, I hate the new UEFA draw format, I don't agree that league winners should be placed in Pot 1. It's not fair to the other teams who have built up years of co-efficient points. You can play well domestically but that doesn't give you a by-pass to Pot 1 if you haven't achieve much in Europe.

Do Europa League winners not go into pot one anyway?

No you can't get the same country teams in the group

I thought this was the case - could have sworn Seville were in the first pot this time round.
Sevilla were in pot 2

Pot 2: Atlético Madrid (ESP), Borussia Dortmund (GER), Arsenal (ENG), Manchester City (ENG), Sevilla (ESP), Porto (POR), Napoli (ITA), Bayer Leverkusen (GER)

You can't draw a team from the same country in the group stage

We've taken quite the tumble, hopefully Jose can get us back into the top 10.

Barca would only be in pot 1 if they win La Liga.
But if Madrid or Juve win it then there would be a space open because they will finish 1st in the league too. So they would qualify for pot 1 in 2 ways

Just as I thought, the top 5 teams in the world are exactly right where they should be. Monaco will surely see its ranking surge.

If we qualify we could be involved in a real group of death.
If our signings based on CL participation pan out we could be a nightmare for an elite pot 1 side

  • Pot 1 contains the title holders and the champions of the top seven associations based on their UEFA country coefficients. If the title holders are one of the champions of the top seven associations, the champions of the association ranked eighth are also seeded into Pot 1 (regulations Article 13.05).
  • Pot 2, 3 and 4 contain the remaining teams, seeded based on their 2017 UEFA club coefficients.

They would take the next highest coefficient country's champions.
So it would be this?

1. Madrid, Chelsea, Bayern, Juventus, Benfica, Monaco, Spartak, Shaktar
2. Barca, Atletico, PSG, Dortmund, Sevilla, Man City, Porto, United
3. Napoli, Zenit, Spurs, Basel, Dynamo, Ajax, Villareal, Anderlecht
4. Liverpool

Napoli would be the main team to avoid, combine that with one of the elite teams in pot 1 and it's a proper group of death.

We'd definitely have at least one tough team in our group. Chelsea being in pot 1 only increases the chances.

They could get Barcelona or Dortmund. The probabilities are that there'll be at least two top teams in each group.

It's called the Champions League, seems fair to me.

Having teams that finish 3rd/4th in their league 30 points behind the league winners and being allowed in the competition doesn't seem fair to me.

The points system is terrible. Bayer finished 3rd in the Bundasliga, 28 points behind Bayern, yet made it into Pot 2. Above plenty of clubs that won their respective leagues. So I agree that it's not fair on some of those who've had a good domestic season.

There will never be a fair solution whilst football isn't UEFA's priority.

The way i look at it it'll always be the same story

1 elite team, 1 strong team, 2 weaker team.

No matter how the coefficient looks like it'll be like that most of the times, bar a few freak group of death.

Even if coefficient changes it'll simply means one elite team ( in this case barca) moved to pot 2 and the weaker team got 1st pot.

But the permutations will be the same. Let's say we seeded first pot at the expense of madrid, we will still have the possibility of being in one group with them. So i wouldn't worry about it too much

They do it so that the two stellar teams from each group go through, except someone always manages to cock that up. It is all about television and sponsorship.

Yeah. But with how things are going naturally it'll be like that.

Even if we took the extreme and swap half of pot 1 with half of pot 2 randomly the outcome will pretty much the same.

Be sides there are 16 strong team in pot 2 and 1 combined. Everyone will bound to get a strong team no matter how you arrange it.

In the scenario where we don't win the EL, but finish 4th in the PL, which pot would we go into? Following our qualification game.
