I think they help to ground all the other players to the traditions and values of the club and also of England itself. At risk of sounding full Brexit if the players at your club don't speak English as the common language I think you start to lose a bit of the identity.
I think there's absolutely nothing Brexity about it. Bale is not criticized for not Speaking Spanish for nothing. Top teams everywhere know and recognize you need a strong base of local players to ground the club, its only in England where terms like "Brexit-model" are thrown about.
That's a fair point. Don't think it's 'brexity' at all, tbh. It makes sense. Definitely the traditions and values of the club will be more prominent in local players. Obviously not a hard and fast rule (and there have been many exceptions of foreign lads 'getting' the club) but I can see the logic.
Guardiola will only allow English to be spoken at City when the players are with the club. It’s one of his measures to prevent cliques forming. He also had a circular dressing room installed so everyone sees everyone else.

I guess we aren’t going to get full Brexit FC but we’ll have a very Brexity back line.

I'm more impress with the British "spine" and squad players United is building atm.
Add Northern Ireland and Republik of Ireland, and it'll look very familiar with our many teams of old.

Current
England: Rashford, AWB, Shaw, Lingard, Smalling, Jones, Young, Gomes, Greenwood, Tuanzebe, Garner + Maguire(?)
Scotland: McTominay
Wales: James + Levitt(?)

Missing
Northern-Ireland: ? (McNair the most recent one)
Republik Ireland: ? (felt like ages)

Credits to our 4 managers (interim and permanent) I guess.
Giggs -> Added the likes of Wilson and that Welsh kid during that short time, and now helping United indirectly from his NT position - James and Levitt.
LVG -> Rashford, Lingard, Smalling Beast mode, and many of the the rest who failed to join current team.
Mou -> McTominay, Lingod and 3rd season Shaw. Debuted Gomes and Tuanzebe, plus few more who aren't making it atm.
Ole -> Greenwood mainly. Brought in AWB and James. Let's see if there is more.

Declan Rice and Sancho next year and we are good to go.
If Sancho doesn't want to come here while we are improving and trying to make the Champions League, then I don't want him when we are back in it. I don't care how good he is, if he doesn't see what we are trying to build and only wants to be here once it's built, then f*ck him...

I’m not bothered by an ‘English’ spine. However, I think it’s essential that we have a core of British players, and players who have come through the Academy throughout the squad.

We need less of the likes of Fred, Darmian, Rojo and Bailly. All of which can be replaced by players from the Academy - which now has been rightly refocused.

Stop spending so much money on mediocre squad players from abroad to free up the funds to spend big money on areas where it matters - as with Maguire.

To properly work with your metaphor, United's "spine" would be:

DeGea
Lindelof
Matic
Pogba
Rashford.

Not much English (or consistency) in there. United will struggle again.
Odd. Matic would be lucky to get a start this season over Scott

Not sure what Sancho has done to be starting ahead of Rashford and I suspect he wouldn't. Rashford is usually very good for England. I think Kane needs to be watching over his shoulder in the longer term.

Rashford is already established and improving, Sterling is still improving despite having a status in his own right now, and then you have Sancho and Hudson-Odoi who look promising...and a whole crop of promising youngsters below that. The thing is these are all players who are fast, skillful and adaptable, who you can play in different positions in different systems. Kane is actually the odd one out as the style of play, system, and every attack is dictated by him being there. A bit like Ruud for United.
Yeah, fair enough noods.
Shaw is 3rd choice LB maybe even 4th. Only Rash AWB and Maguire have a long term England future
Yeah I got ahead of myself a bit there and swapped Rashford and Shaw around re England starters

I think Shaw could be first choice. Still seems to have fitness issues but if he overcomes that and carries on from last season he'd be pushing for a place. The last internationals England were struggling to play anyone there so the position is up for grabs.

Heard this for about 4 years now. He wasn't that good last season either and that certainly will not get him ahead of Rose

Realistically, Alexander-Arnold is ahead of Wan-Bissaka, Chilwell is ahead of Shaw. Lingard needs much better form to get his place back and Rashford is probably more an impact player for England. So really only Maguire is a definite starter.

Maguire is our only guaranteed England starter for the next 5 yrs or so. Wan Bissaka is fantastic but he’s up against Trent so he’ll need to offer more going forward despite being the better defender of the two.

Rashford will need a big step up in the next year or two, certainly with his consistency. Ironically, I think his place is most at threat from Greenwood in the next 2-3 years. There’s an outcome where Greenwood has a breakout, Rooney esque season and he’s the new media darling, leaving Rashford to drift in to Welbeck obscurity
