There's too much sentimentality with Dave. It's a no brainer with his pen record that you would have Hendo in goal instead. A missed opportunity.... but I think Ole will learn...
5 years and 36 penalties without saving one for DDG. Ole shouldn't let sentimentality running into his head!

Always easy to say in hindsight. De Gea deserved to start. Game should be finished off in 90 min anyway. Not his fault. I doubt Henderson would have done much better even.
This has nothing to do with hindsight. We've had de Gea for 10 years. You know what you're getting with him in regards to pens. He shouldn't have been allowed to fail.

Yes but It doesn't matter at the end as all our 10 outfield players scored anyway. No difference to the outcome even if we went first.
The point is every United player faced the pressure of having to score. Credit to them, they did. Villarreal didn’t face that same pressure.

Another thing I noticed: Bruno seemed to win the toss to decide the penalty order… and we went second. Statistically that is a losing move.

Pogba being subbed off too suggests penalties weren’t really prepared for.
Eh? Mata and Telles were clearly subbed on with pens in mind.

De Gea should have been Krul’d though. I refuse to believe he’s saved 11 penalties in his entire career.

You probably are right that we faced extra pressure but the thing is, our outfield players handled it well. Unfortunately their keeper let them down big time by not saving (or even close to saving) one of the 11 penalties!

Probably ole didn't want to hurt de gea. It cost him the trophy.
If true then he must be sacked, his job is supposed to be winning titles not keeping players hearts unbroken.

I'm sure most of us agreed Dave should deserve to start the game but we are talking about subbing him off for penalty shootout... a matured professional like him shouldn't regard this a snub, right??

Which was when he should have brought Henderson on. Better penalty saving record aside he’s the sort of cocky arrogant bastard who thrives on a situation like that. Dave just wilted.
Yeah. I had no faith in DDG being the hero. He’s been crap for years and I have wanted him out for a while. I didn’t know about Hendo’s record though to fancy him for a Krul’ing.

If we had Krul on the bench, then sure.

John Harrison:

You have to feel for #DeGea, it’s a horrible feeling to concede 11 PKs never mind failing to score one too! Tonight also extends #DeGea’s streak to now conceding 40 PKs in a row (including shootouts). There is only a 0.04% chance of this happening to an average PK saver

This is one decision Ole will regret for a long time. I had no faith in DDG saving any penalty unless they blasted one over the bar. Their players also seemed to know how bad DDG is at saving pens because they dispatched all of them confidently.

This one is entirely on Ole and his staff. To not make use of Henderson when his record is that good really baffles me. Did we sacrifice a trophy to not upset De Gea by subbing him off?

Not necessarily Kurl. DDG saved 11 out of 64 penalties (17.2%) and Hendo was 8 out of 19 (42.1%). No rocket science.
It's disrespectful to sub a keeper before penalty shootout. I can only remember it being done with Krul at the world cup. If you decide to start with De Gea you trust him until the end, simple.

To be fair, it's not on Ole. How do you tell your bosses they're paying the highest wages in the world to a GK who can't do some of the fundamentals of the position.

I think it's been evident for a while he prefers Henderson a lot more than DDG.

I really didn't need to see Henderson's stats. That's just gonna make me angrier.

We have a notoriously shit keeper at penalties and one with an almost 50/50 record and we use the shit keeper when we had 2 subs left in injury time.

Who gives a shit?

We went into a shootout with a keeper who is one of the all time worst penalty saving keepers in history and guess what ? He's fecking shite, gets nowhere near 11 penalties and we lose.

sorry, but I couldn't care less about hurting a player's feelings in that situation. You do what you have to win the game, period. Did anybody really have any confidence in De Gea going into this? He's always been awful at that part of the game, so it was hardly a surprise to see what unfolded. I'd rather have won the shootout and dealt with a pissed off De Gea right now.

Harrison is a real gem to follow on twitter. Always find his analyses extremely interesting personally.

That said, seems like there is a fundamental coaching issue here - who is United's GK coach and how is he streets behind a twitter analyst?

I honestly thought they were going to sub Hendo on. You might as well hand them the trophy with DDG. Huge fail, that. At least give yourselves a chance!

He had no confidence you could tell. It was as painful as watching Roy Carroll in the shootout against Arsenal in the 2005 FA Cup final.

Yeah only need to look at his penalty to see proof of that I am afraid to say

I’m not sure if I feel more sorry for De Gea after Ole let him face a penalty shootout or more sorry for Ole after the worst shootout performance imaginable from a goalkeeper...

de gea has strengths , as does Henderson... can’t decide. They both have positives the other doesn’t .. would probably gone henco for pens but a lot easier with hindsight

would City, Liverpool, Chelsea made this error? Not at all.

I feel it is probably only us and Arsenal that would make judgement this badly. Maybe Spurs as well I guess.

So every time a team loses a penalty shoot out it is going to be the manager's fault for not switching on his sub keeper for the penalties?

Ole made some big mistakes last night but playing De Gea and keeping him on was not one of them.

I have seen posts saying he never made a substitution until late on because he had seen how good his players were taking Penalties during practice well if that was the case wouldn't he have seen how good his goalkeepers were at saving them too?

You can blame Ole for starting Bailly and taking Greenwood off and not Rashford plus waiting too long to make a change which he often this but this weird he should have switched keepers nonsense is hindsight at its most pathetic

Totally agree, you must respect the player no matter the cost, no matter if he's shit at it, no matter if it's going to clearly cost you at the end you'll end up empty handed but you'll know you respected that player and that's what the sport is about, not winning, but respecting players.

Our trophy room may be empty on first sight but watch all that respect, that cant be bought.

Think i only saw once someone change keeper for a shootout, Krul i think was brought on.

Still though, with one keeper being notoriously bad at pens and one being decent i cant imagine why no one in our coaching staff thought of it

They weren't planned for of course, until the last min or so when we brought Mata and Telles on just to take them.
We could have brought Hendo on then.

This shit is on Ole. Idiotic decision not to bring Henderson on for the penalties. He lost his balls.
Let's not overdo it. Hendo isn't that great. It still wasn't a given.
It was only a couple of games back Hendo gave Salah the easiest finish a prem keeper had ever given up.

No only when you have someone that cant save one to save his life. If Romero was in goal, nobody would call for a change. De Gea is garbage.

It's not a given, but you give yourself more of a chance.
The second the commentator mentioned Hendo's 6 pen saves i did fear the inevitable.
But no-one could have foreseen 11 pens and missing one himself.

But when their keeper puts one into the top corner it's a ridiculous night.

I thought Mata and Telles did superbly to come on cold, not touch the ball then suddenly put their kicks in first touch.

Well it would have helped if DDG would have made proper full length dives to one or the other corner. As it was his attempts to save were so feeble it removed any pressure from the next kicker. /facepalm
