It's clear some of these ex footballers have no idea about football..

Varane has won CL's, world cup, numerous league titles and some people think Ben White is better.
It's depressing actually. Many of these guys just play the game without studying it. You hear it almost evey time a pundit opens his mouth.

Talksport is literally designed to go viral online and encourage phone ins. Take everything on there with a pinch of salt.

They actually do it quite well. Radio for the brain dead, and it works.

Just remember these odd takes when Arsenal are 17 with 10 games played and their fans are having a massive meltdown. No sympathy for their delusions.

I think he genuinely believes what he said. These guy look at the EPL as some sort of final level in a game.

Guarantee if it was the other way round, he would be praising Arsenal for the bargain of the window and White would not be able to cope with the pressure of Utd.
To be fair to him, it's not like White we have to cope with any pressure at Arsenal.

So many of them do. And then when one loses to the likes of Villareal or Sevilla in the EL they crawl under a rock and you don't hear from them in a month.

Ben White name should never be Mentioned in same sentence as a guy who was part of the reason Madrid and France won the trophies they did.

Can't wait to see Varane play next to Maguire, as for Ben White who'd shit himself at the Sight of Rashford, now he'll be Pissing and shitting himself more with Lukaku in town at Chelski.

Ben White is overrated as feck. If we signed him and Arsenal signed Varane the narrative would be different.

It's an insult to compare the two and White isn't exactly PL proven. One decent season.

I didn't even know who Ben White was until the Euros. Then suddenly he's better than a multiple CL and WC winner. OK.

Did anyone talk about Özil and Sanchez not having PL experience when Arsenal signed them?

I suppose they should have gone for Ashley Young instead.

I like White as a player. I think he's good and I think he'll go onto to be really good. I also think when you apply 'english tax' £50m isn't THAT ridiculous. It's high, but who cares.

What I don't understand is the comparisons, why are comparisons being made between the two? Why aren't we asking who is a better signing Ben White or Cristian Romero? Or Nathan Collins? Why not Varane or Konate? You know, similar level teams...?

Of course it would. We’d all be thinking why in good feck we signed some nobody whilst one of the most decorated players was available for less. It’s defies logic to think White is better deal. Mental.

Option #1: Raphael Varane, age 28 (Debut for Real Madrid: Age 18) - Centerback of a Galacticos teamwho is demanded to win everything always, FOUR Champions League trophies, three La Liga titles, UEFA Team of the year player, FIFA World Cup Dream Team player, 300 caps for Real Madrid, 79 caps for the French national team - At the very peak of his career. Price: £41m

Option #2: Ben White, age 23 (Debut for Brighton: Age 22 - ) - 36 Premier League games for Brighton, 2 caps for England. Price: £50m

Shaun, if you ever read this: What a silly, silly thing to say.

It feeds their ego, as average players, to big up the league they played in as this 'ultimate test'.

Mate but Varane’s on high wages or something. Oh and White is younger… :houllier:

I think it was a bit of a weird question. Even comparing anything United related to Arsenal is pointless for the next few years. They'll be mid-table again this year so aren't in the same conversation.

Looking at them right now and not speculating who is the best in three years, Varane is a level up from White. However the pressure on Varane is probably bigger. People expect him to be top-3 defender in the league.

It's such a brain dead logic. A better player is a better player. So if we signed Messi, Grealish would have been a better signing cause he's new to the league?
It is not always the best player who is the best signing, though.

We all love United
SWP is a former City player so he can’t be seen or heard saying anything good about United. I really doubt he believes what he said himself there unless he’s really that dense and stupid

Nail on the head.

He's a blue. He will go home and get rinsed by all his mates as he's spouting rubbish.

I just don't get it. Is is parochial nationalism? British exceptionalism? What is it? It's beyond stupid. Ben White may well go on to be a very good defender. But speaking about him in the same breath as Varane is a joke.

But Varane would still be a better signing than White for Arsenal too.
I personally think so too, but it depends on what you want and how things turn out, both in the short and long run. I never take a success for granted anymore when it comes to new signings. Sanchez taught me that…

I remember reading an interview with Luke Shaw when he signed and he said the first time he actually watched football as opposed to playing it was the 2010 world cup. He would've been 15 then.
