He doesn't play like FDJ. Never played like him in the youth teams either. FDJ is like a 10, playing as a 6 (like Iqbal). He can dribble and progress the ball through that. They have through balls in them compared to the average midfielder.

Garner was a talented youth player who was always the more defensive presence compared to his midfield partners. Unlike McTominay, he is much better distributor of the ball, and he is more defensively sound (also aggressive). His technique is better, but it's not outstanding. If you had to make a style comparison, maybe a Carrick would fit the bill (pre-2013 season where Carrick was at his best in regards to distribution).

Based on his preseason, Garner is still not looking like he did at youth level in regards to displaying all his tools. He still needs to develop to show the level of passing he did at youth level. However, he will probably show more effort in getting back than McTominay and he does have the potential to develop a good passing game.
yes - this was the Garner we saw last year. His distribution for us was crucial. He’s a better tackler then he looks and strong for a skinny lad. He does need time and minutes on the pitch to show what he can do. He needs to start games rather then come on for the last 20m.

I don’t know how good he is as an out and out CDM but his positioning doesn’t look sharp enough for me. I like my DM to just play and mark space Centrally , instead of chasing players around the pitch.
That particular position is all about positioning. Position yourself right you’ll receive the ball with time and space to progress it. Position yourself right you’ll protect the Central Defence and force the opposition to go out wide, your responsibility is to slow down their attack and not to win direct duels.
I don’t think going out on loan will do him any good to be honest. The type of player he should be for a club like United is not taught in lesser clubs. I prefer my contenders to stay in house and fight for a spot. The right opportunity might come up at a time you’re away on loan. The youth people should be knowledgeable to know whether a players potential is high enough or not. Stop wasting the time of these kids with foolish hopes of one day. He was good for Forest no doubt from the little I’ve seen but the demands are no where near how a Man United midfielder is expected to play.

Looks like Nottingham Forest have signed Freuler from Atalanta, a central midfielder. Guess that rules out any return.

its not been officially announced yet but looks done - he looks a similar type of player to Jimmy so might well be the case. Bloody shame - Yatesy and Jimmy were a brilliant partnership.

We should just play him at 6 - think he has more intelligence and control to beat the pres and has long range distribution. Play Fred ahead of him which is better for Fred in a box to box role - putting tackles and pressing opposition. Have Eriksen play more deeper or play DVB so he and Fred get some support. Then he and Eriksen can use their long range passing to find gaps in the pitch

Wasn’t a return ruled out already since they signed Henderson on loan? Don’t think they’re allowed two players from same PL club.
On loan yes but there was talk of Jimmy going on a permanent deal with possibly a buy back clause. I think ETH wants to keep him, his lack of minutes so far is more a product of getting injured at the start of the tour so he is behind the others. I think as has been mentioned, once we get to Europa League time and the games are coming every 3 or 4 days we will see him get a fair bit of time and even a few starts. For lads like Hannibal, Savage, Iqbal etc. they need a loan and 40+ games somewhere but Jimmy has already racked up a ton of games in the last 2 seasons so he is ready for a squad role with us to see if he can sink or swim.

Already a million times better defensively than Fred or McTominay. That alone warrants him a place in our current team. I'd be selling either of the 2 before him if we get in new signings too.

I wouldn't mind if we tried him in a midfield with Eriksen and Bruno against Brentford, can't be any worse then the shit we saw last week.

It would be to much for him, if he played alongside Fred with Eriksen in the Bruno role i reckon he would do ok(which would be a big improvement on McT)

I’ve always thought we overindulge in our academy lads, thinking they all walk on water and good enough to play for United which is a pretty fecking high standard to reach regardless. To be honest, some of our academy lads are giving the academy a bad name with their antics and demeanors recently like Rashford, Lingard, Pogba, Henderson and potentially worst of all Greenwood.

Things like this are something we’re going to have to get better at. Identifying the best point to sell someone. In the Woodward era, we’d have handed him a juicy contract and it would end up backfiring as he wouldn’t be that good and we’re stuck with him as no-one is going to pay those wages.

I’d have personally liked the price to be more around the £20m mark. It probably still can be if there’s lots of interest and we can have a bidding war.

Unless we’ve valued him so low because we will have a hefty sell on clause or a lower buy back, that does seem a bit low. I’d say £20m is a fair price.

Correct move, he’s not good enough if we want to be a top club ever again. Cash in.

Would be happy if he's sold. About time we cash in on youngsters who do alright on loan but clearly aren't at the elite level we're looking for

I really like Jimmy at 6 but we have to realize that most of the academy lads can't make it here. sell him to recoup fund and insert a double buy back clause.

Let's give the guy a chance in the first team at least? Even a few sub appearances?

Madness to let him walk when he hasn't ever been given a real chance, when his position is one where we have zero players or depth, and especially when the guys who play ahead of him do not deserve to. The decision making is getting more and more questionable by the day.

Let's give the guy a chance!

McT has been given all the time in the world, is shit, and we wouldn't get a fiver for him...but this guy gets nothing?
If we continue to hoard players of his quality all we'll ever have is an average team.

McTominay should also have been sold before he ever got into our first team

City, liverpool, Chelsea, they all sell young players without first giving them 100 appearances in the first team. It's part of running a successful club and continuing to make money to invest in better players

He's obviously not playing because he isn't good enough so I'm not sure what there is to be disappointed about.

He's had very limited chances over the years but whenever he's played for the first team, he's done nothing. It's better to sell if we don't think he's good enough to get into our current midfield.

Best example is Rhian Brewster. Never played in the league for Liverpool with some cup appearances you can count on one hand. Goes to Swansea and looks the business at that level. Sheff Utd come in and bid £23.5m for him. Liverpool agree to sell.

Since then, Brewster has a 1 goal in 4 ratio at Championship level and didn’t score once in 30 PL games. They probably don’t miss him and absolutely don’t lose sleep over it.

He's one of those players that has gotten really good without ever playing for us, simply because we are desperate for something new in midfield. It's similar to how Dean Henderson grows in stature every time DDG makes a mistake.

I'm certainly open to giving him a run-out, but I also wouldn't be devastated if he was sold.

It’s doubtful he’d ever be a regular first team player for us and it’s pretty plain to see that we need sales to bring in more players for ETH. At another time, he’d probably be given a season’s grace to see what he could offer but everything is heightened at the moment.

We should sell if we got a couple of midfielders lined up.

20m seems a decent price, around what Neco Williams was sold for by Liverpool.

It makes sense if we're going to get De Jong and Rabiot in, I'd prefer we got rid of the ones currently playing, but I've come to accept they are bulletproof.

If he's sold we must insert a buy back clause without question. Disappointing if he goes without a chance when McT and Fred who have had chance after chance continue to fail. If we got Rabiot and FDJ I'd much rather we kept Garner and sold one of the other two.

That being said if we are looking to cash in while a youth players stock is high but don't see him being quite good enough it's a refreshing change to our transfer strategy.

I wish he'd gotten more of a chance, but the few times he played for United, I was unimpressed.

If ETH doesn't rate him, people should respect that and consider they may have overrated him.

Looks like we have a deal with Forest lined up and now have to sell him permanent with a buy back clause because we've already loaned them Henderson.

Piss poor from those who are negotiating these deals this summer, although I shouldn't expect anything less.

He has 2+1 left on his contract.. ideally would have liked a premier league loan before selling him..

Whatever.. better than keeping him around for 2-3 years and not giving him any minutes.. he should be playing.

This may sound like blind loyalty to a youth product that may or may not be good enough, but something about selling Garner for 20m and then immediately giving that to Juventus for Rabiot doesn’t sit right.

Feels similar to when we sold Smalling, but kept Jones and Bailly. We can only sell players someone is interested in buying or who want to leave. We are way too soft a touch when it comes to moving players on.
